These operating measures help compare contractors, but they do not by themselves establish valuation or investment suitability.
Start with backlog, but treat it as visibility—not cash
Backlog is the value of work a contractor expects to perform under contracts at a stated date. It is useful for judging how much work is scheduled, but it is not cash on hand, guaranteed revenue, or a promise that every listed dollar will be earned. Noble cautions that backlog at a particular date may not indicate actual operating results. Contract performance, mobilization, approvals and early-termination provisions can affect whether and when work produces revenue. Noble’s filings and reports explain its disclosures.

When comparing backlog figures, establish what each company counts as firm work, whether options or conditional awards are excluded, and the expected timing of contract revenue. Keep qualifications beside the figure. For example, Transocean reported approximately $6.1 billion of backlog as of February 19, 2026. On August 5, 2026, it reported approximately $6.7 billion, excluding $1.0 billion of Equinor work pending license-partner approvals. The latter amount should not be treated as approved firm work. Transocean’s February 2026 update and August 2026 update provide the dated figures.
Compare utilization only after checking its denominator
Utilization estimates how much of a fleet’s potential time is contracted or working, but companies can use different fleet populations and reporting periods. Noble defines utilization as contracted operating days divided by the number of rigs in its fleet—including cold-stacked rigs—multiplied by calendar days. It defines an operating day as a calendar day operating under a drilling contract. A contractor that excludes cold-stacked rigs can report a higher percentage even if underlying rig activity is similar.

Rig class matters too. Noble reported 67% floater utilization for 2025 using its stated fleet definition. Valaris reported global marketed utilization of approximately 88% for drillships and 89% for jackups at year-end 2025. These are not like-for-like statistics: the Valaris figures describe global marketed rig segments, while Noble’s is a company-reported floater measure with cold-stacked rigs included in its denominator. Do not substitute one for the other. See Noble’s 2025 reporting and Valaris’s year-end 2025 materials.
Separate realized day rates from new fixture rates
A day rate is the revenue earned for an operating day under a drilling contract, but published averages can represent very different things. Noble defines its average day rate as contract drilling revenue per operating day. Compare that realized company average with another realized average for the same period and rig class, or compare new fixtures with similar new fixtures. Do not mix the two.
Rig generation, region, contract duration, reimbursable services, performance bonuses and mobilization terms all affect rate comparisons. For example, Noble reported a 2025 floater average day rate of $402,703. Transocean reported a $417,000 weighted average for ten new fixtures since its October 2025 report as of February 19, 2026; on August 5, 2026, it reported about $461,000 weighted average for five new fixtures since its May 2026 report. Those Transocean figures are averages for new fixtures, not whole-fleet realized rates. Valaris has also observed that seventh-generation drillships historically achieved higher utilization and stronger day rates than older assets. These dated figures offer context, not universal forward prices. Sources: Noble, Transocean, February 2026, Transocean, August 2026, and Valaris.

Test whether operating activity can produce cash
Contracted days and rates do not tell the whole operating story. A rig earns no drilling revenue while idle, and downtime, maintenance, recertification, mobilization or reactivation can reduce revenue or consume cash. Noble identifies operating days, day rates and operating costs as its three primary contract-drilling operating metrics. Read those measures together: a higher rate can be offset by fewer working days or higher costs.
Rank #3
Company disclosures provide useful operating context. Noble reported 6,356 floater operating days and a 2025 floater average day rate of $402,703; its 2025 filing also reported 67% floater utilization. Operating days, rate and utilization describe related but distinct aspects of activity, so compare their periods and definitions rather than treating any one as a complete performance measure. Noble’s annual reporting provides the relevant definitions and figures.

Operating cash flow is not the same as free cash flow or cash available for distributions. Compare operating cash flow with capital expenditures, interest, debt maturities, working-capital movements, taxes, reactivation spending and shareholder returns. Check whether a reported free-cash-flow figure is a company-defined non-GAAP measure and what adjustments it includes.
Rank #4
Noble reported $951.7 million of net cash provided by operating activities for 2025. In the fourth quarter of 2025, it reported $187 million of operating cash flow, $152 million of capital expenditures and $35 million of non-GAAP free cash flow. The quarterly figures show why capital spending and the company’s definition matter when assessing cash generation. Noble’s 2025 results materials contain these measures.

Use a like-for-like checklist when comparing contractors
- Backlog: Record the measurement date, definition, firm versus conditional work, expected timing and relevant approval or termination conditions.
- Fleet and utilization: Match reporting periods, rig classes and denominator definitions; identify whether cold-stacked rigs are included.
- Rates: Separate realized averages from new fixtures and account for generation, geography, duration and contract terms.
- Operating performance: Review operating days, costs, downtime and revenue efficiency together.
- Cash and obligations: Compare operating cash flow with capex, interest, debt maturities and maintenance or reactivation requirements; label non-GAAP figures and adjustments.
This operating framework does not assess share price or valuation, balance-sheet solvency, jurisdiction-specific tax or legal exposure, or whether an investment is suitable for a particular reader.
