Market capitalization tells you how large Nvidia is, not whether its stock is attractively priced. To evaluate NVDA, compare the share price with earnings and cash generation, then test whether growth, margins and execution can support what investors are paying. Nvidia’s latest reported quarter showed rapid growth and high gross margins, but most revenue came from Data Center and the company also disclosed substantial supply commitments. Those facts matter more than market cap alone—and none supplies a valuation multiple without a dated share price and a clearly defined earnings or cash-flow measure.
What market cap can—and cannot—tell you
Market capitalization is a company’s share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. It is a measure of equity-market size, not a verdict on whether the shares are cheap or expensive. A large market cap can reflect strong current results, expectations of future growth, or both.

Valuation asks what results the price assumes. A useful first step is to compare a dated share price with earnings or cash flow for a stated period. The multiple changes if you use a different price date, fiscal period, or accounting basis, so label all three. This evidence does not establish a same-date NVDA share price or analyst consensus estimates; it therefore cannot support a current P/E, forward P/E, enterprise-value multiple, fair value, or price target.
What Nvidia’s latest reported quarter says about the business
Nvidia reported fiscal Q2 2027 results on August 26, 2026, for the quarter ended July 26, 2026. Its results show both the pace of growth and the degree to which revenue was concentrated in Data Center.

| Measure | Nvidia-reported result | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $96.2 billion in fiscal Q2 2027; up 106% year over year and 18% sequentially. | Track both comparisons across later quarters; a fast growth rate is not, by itself, evidence that the rate will persist. |
| Data Center revenue | $89.0 billion in fiscal Q2 2027; up 117% year over year and 18% sequentially. | It accounted for most of the quarter’s revenue, so assess the company’s growth alongside its exposure to this business. |
| GAAP gross margin | 75.0% in fiscal Q2 2027, versus 72.4% in fiscal Q2 2026. | Compare margins on the same accounting basis and watch the trend; a single quarter does not establish durability. |
| Diluted GAAP earnings per share | $2.46 in fiscal Q2 2027. | Use a matching earnings period and basis when calculating an earnings multiple. |
| Edge Computing revenue | $7.2 billion in fiscal Q2 2027; up 27% year over year and 13% sequentially. | Identify the reporting taxonomy when comparing periods: Nvidia’s fiscal Q2 2027 materials introduced market-platform reporting alongside its traditional Compute & Networking and Graphics segments. |
These figures are reported by Nvidia in its fiscal Q2 2027 results release; the filing discusses the reporting transition and interim results. Nvidia reported $215.9 billion of revenue for fiscal 2026, up 65%, and a 71.1% GAAP gross margin for that full year. Fiscal 2027 is a 53-week year, and the company cautions that interim results are not necessarily indicative of future periods. Avoid treating one quarter’s growth or margin as a full-year forecast.
How to turn reported results into a valuation check
- Choose a price date. Record the NVDA share price and date. Use the same date for any market capitalization or enterprise value you calculate.
- Choose a denominator and period. For a P/E, divide the dated share price by earnings per share for a stated trailing or forecast period. State whether earnings are GAAP or non-GAAP. For an enterprise-value multiple, define enterprise value and match it to operating earnings or free cash flow for a stated period.
- Test the assumptions behind the multiple. Ask what revenue growth, margins and cash generation would be needed to support the valuation. Compare Nvidia with its own results over consistent periods before comparing it with other companies.
- Check the share count and accounting basis. Market cap uses shares outstanding; per-share earnings use a diluted share count. Review changes in diluted shares and share-based compensation rather than assuming buybacks automatically increase per-share value.
- Keep actual results separate from forecasts. Mark management guidance as guidance, not achieved revenue or margin, and later compare it with the reported result.
Nvidia said it changed its non-GAAP treatment to include stock-based compensation beginning in fiscal Q1 2027. That change can affect comparisons with earlier non-GAAP periods. For a trend or peer comparison, align the accounting definition as well as the period; do not mix GAAP and non-GAAP figures as if they were interchangeable.

What guidance implies—and what it does not
For fiscal Q3 2027, Nvidia management forecast revenue of $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%, and GAAP and non-GAAP gross margin of 74.0%, plus or minus 50 basis points. The outlook was issued August 26, 2026, and assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. These are management forecasts, not reported results or guarantees. Compare them with the subsequent quarter’s actual figures on the same basis.

Where concentration and execution risk enter the analysis
High growth can support a valuation only if the business can deliver the products and sustain demand. Nvidia’s fiscal Q2 2027 Form 10-Q says Blackwell accounted for the majority of system shipments, notes supply constraints as Vera Rubin production shipments began in fiscal Q3 2027, and describes risks from inaccurate demand estimates and production complexity.
The same filing reported $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026, up from $119 billion in the prior quarter. Nvidia said the commitments help secure inventory and capacity amid supply constraints and uncertain demand estimates. The filing warns that commitments and production complexity may contribute to delays, revenue volatility, inventory provisions, lower yields, higher material costs and warranty costs. These are execution exposures to weigh against growth, not proof that any particular outcome will occur.

Export exposure also needs a time limit. Nvidia said Data Center Hopper shipments to China were less than 1% of Data Center revenue in fiscal Q2 2027; its fiscal Q3 outlook assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. Those disclosures describe the quarter and the outlook assumptions, respectively. They do not resolve future export-policy exposure.

How to assess cash, debt and shareholder returns
For a complete picture, compare operating cash flow and free cash flow with net income, while considering the capital needed to support growth. The Q2 figures cited here do not establish those cash-flow measures, so they are not enough to calculate a cash-flow multiple. Use the filing’s cash-flow statement and define free cash flow consistently before comparing it over time or with peers.
Nvidia reported $56.586 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable debt securities on its balance sheet as of July 26, 2026. It also disclosed issuing $25.0 billion in senior unsecured notes in June 2026 and returning approximately $26.0 billion through repurchases and cash dividends during fiscal Q2 2027. These are different measures: the balance-sheet figure is a point-in-time asset total, the notes are an issuance, and shareholder returns cover the quarter. Review the full balance sheet and cash flows before drawing a conclusion about net cash, debt capacity or the durability of distributions.
A practical conclusion framework
Before deciding whether Nvidia’s valuation is justified, make sure the analysis can answer these questions with matched periods and definitions:
- Is revenue growth broadening beyond its largest business, or becoming more dependent on it?
- Are gross and operating margins holding up as product mix, supply conditions and costs change?
- Does operating cash flow and free cash flow support reported earnings and the investment required to grow?
- What share price date, earnings or cash-flow period, and GAAP or non-GAAP basis underpin each multiple?
- How do commitments, supply constraints, customer or supplier concentration, and export exposure affect the range of plausible outcomes?
- Are buybacks and dividends changing diluted shares and per-share results, and how do they fit with cash and debt?
A defensible conclusion connects the dated stock price to an explicit set of operating and cash-flow assumptions. Market cap is the starting scale, not the answer.
