A midstream MLP is worth deeper analysis when its cash distributions are funded by recurring operating cash flow, debt remains manageable under stress, and contracts protect margins without hiding material volume or counterparty risk. The practical method is to rebuild the partnership’s distributable-cash-flow calculation from its filing, test distribution coverage and retained cash over several periods, map debt and maturities, then inspect the actual contracts, customers, sponsors and capital requirements behind “fee-based” revenue.
Do not begin with the headline yield. Yield describes a market price and a declared distribution; it does not establish that the payment is sustainable. This framework uses issuer disclosures and reconciles their definitions rather than applying a single sector-wide safety rule.

What you are really evaluating
An MLP investor is evaluating a chain of cash conversion:
- Customers pay for transportation, storage, gathering, processing or related services.
- Those receipts become operating cash after operating costs, working-capital movements, interest, taxes and maintenance spending.
- The partnership distributes some cash to common unitholders, preferred holders, the general partner and, where applicable, noncontrolling interests.
- Whatever remains can fund growth projects, acquisitions, debt repayment, buybacks or liquidity reserves.
A strong distribution case requires all four links to work. A high stated coverage ratio can still coexist with heavy growth spending, an approaching maturity wall, weak customer credit or contracts that must be repriced soon.

Use the latest annual and quarterly filings, but keep the periods comparable. A quarterly ratio beside a full-year ratio, or an equity-method cash receipt included in one issuer’s DCF but excluded by another, can create a false ranking.
Step 1: Rebuild distributable cash flow from the filing
Find the issuer’s definition and reconciliation
Search the latest Form 10-K or Form 10-Q for “distributable cash flow,” “DCF,” “cash available for distribution” and “non-GAAP measures.” Record the exact definition, the covered period and the reconciliation to GAAP net income or operating cash flow. The reconciliation is more useful than the label because every partnership makes different adjustments.
Western Midstream Partners’ Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, defines DCF from adjusted EBITDA after specified billing differences, cash interest, maintenance capital, taxes and applicable noncontrolling interests. That is an issuer-specific construction, not a template that can be transferred to another MLP.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe filing’s caution is important: “Our non-GAAP financial measures (i) should not be considered as alternatives to the comparable GAAP measures or any other measure of financial performance presented in accordance with GAAP, (ii) have important limitations as analytical tools because they exclude some, but not all, items that affect the comparable GAAP measures, (iii) should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for analysis of our results as reported under GAAP, and (iv) may not be comparable to similarly titled measures of other companies in our industry, thereby diminishing their utility as comparative measures.” Attribute that warning to Western Midstream Partners, not to a named executive.
Reconstruct the bridge line by line
Build a worksheet that starts with the company’s adjusted EBITDA and follows every adjustment to DCF. Typical items and the questions they raise are:
| Bridge item | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Adjusted EBITDA | Which recurring and unusual items were removed from GAAP results? Are gains, losses, legal settlements or acquisition costs treated consistently? |
| Billing, timing or accrual adjustments | Does the adjustment convert recognized revenue to cash collected, and can the timing reverse in a later period? |
| Cash interest | Is the amount paid in cash, or does it include noncash amortization? Does it reflect the current debt balance? |
| Maintenance capital expenditure | How does the issuer distinguish maintenance from growth capital, and has that definition changed? |
| Cash taxes | Are taxes paid by the partnership, subsidiaries or equity-method investments? Are one-time tax payments excluded? |
| Equity-method distributions | Is the partnership counting cash actually received from a joint venture, or only its share of the venture’s accounting income? |
| Preferred, general-partner and noncontrolling interests | Are these claims deducted before DCF is presented, or handled later in the distribution-coverage denominator? |
Compare the bridge with GAAP operating cash flow. A widening gap needs an explanation: working-capital releases, equity-method accounting, capitalized costs or other adjustments can make DCF look stronger than cash retained on the balance sheet.
Separate recurring cash from timing effects
Read the footnotes for volume true-ups, shipper billings, deficiency payments, insurance proceeds and other timing items. A favorable adjustment that reverses next quarter is not equivalent to a permanent tariff increase. Track each adjustment for at least four quarters and mark whether it repeats, reverses or disappears.

Step 2: Measure distribution coverage and cash retained
Use a clearly defined ratio
The basic calculation is distribution coverage = DCF ÷ cash distributions. Use DCF and distributions from the same period and entity perimeter. Then state exactly what the denominator includes: common distributions, preferred distributions, general-partner interests, incentive distribution rights, noncontrolling interests or other claims.
Some partnerships present coverage after preferred distributions; others do not. A ratio that appears higher simply because a senior claim is outside the denominator is not economically safer. Recalculate the ratio on a common basis when comparing issuers, and disclose any remaining definition difference.
Look across multiple periods
Calculate quarterly and trailing-twelve-month coverage, then inspect a period with weaker throughput, lower commodity-linked margins or higher operating costs. One quarter can benefit from a billing catch-up or a temporary working-capital release. A durable record shows whether coverage survives ordinary volatility.
Do not convert a coverage ratio into a promise. A partnership can distribute cash today while future distributions fall because a contract expires, a customer defaults, a project overruns or debt service rises.
Track what happens after the distribution
Coverage does not show how much cash the partnership keeps. Build a second bridge:
- Start with DCF.
- Subtract all cash distributions, including claims not included in the headline ratio.
- Identify cash spent on growth capital, acquisitions, buybacks, debt repayment, working-capital investment and joint-venture funding.
- Reconcile the result to the change in cash, revolver borrowings and other liquidity sources.
Western Midstream states that free cash flow is available in aggregate for distributions, debt repayments and other partnership purposes. “Available” therefore does not mean earmarked exclusively for unitholder payments. Retained cash used to reduce debt can strengthen future coverage; retained cash consumed by repeatedly delayed projects may not.
Step 3: Put leverage, interest and liquidity in context
Collect the full debt picture
Record total debt, cash, net debt, interest expense, fixed- and floating-rate exposure, secured debt, guarantees, covenant tests, revolver capacity, letters of credit and the maturity date of every material tranche. Note whether the issuer’s leverage ratio uses total debt or net debt and whether EBITDA is adjusted for acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures or annualized synergies.

| Measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Total debt | Shows the contractual principal burden before considering cash balances. |
| Net debt | Accounts for cash that may be available, while recognizing that restricted or operational cash may not be freely usable. |
| Debt/EBITDA | Indicates leverage only under the issuer’s chosen EBITDA definition; reconcile it before comparing companies. |
| Interest expense and coverage | Shows how much operating cash is consumed before distributions and how floating rates could change that burden. |
| Maturity ladder | Identifies refinancing years and the amount that must be repaid or rolled over. |
| Committed liquidity | Combines available revolver capacity and other committed sources, subject to covenants and borrowing-base conditions. |
| Covenant headroom | Shows how far EBITDA, asset values or cash flow could deteriorate before a restriction is triggered. |
Test direction, not just a point estimate
Plot leverage for several quarters and years. Falling leverage supported by retained cash and stable EBITDA is different from a temporarily low ratio caused by a recent acquisition being excluded from the denominator. Rising leverage while distributions and growth spending continue deserves a separate explanation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run at least three downside cases in your worksheet:
- Lower EBITDA: reduce volumes, margins or customer payments while leaving debt unchanged.
- Higher interest: reprice floating-rate debt and model refinancing at a higher coupon when maturities arrive.
- Lower cash available for debt service: add maintenance overruns, delayed customer receipts, weaker joint-venture distributions or a required working-capital build.
For each case, record coverage, net leverage, interest coverage, revolver usage and covenant headroom. The point is not to predict a precise crisis level; it is to see whether a plausible setback forces a distribution cut, asset sale, equity issuance or refinancing.
Use issuer figures only as dated examples
MPLX reported a 3.7x leverage ratio at June 30, 2026, in its second-quarter 2026 earnings release and also disclosed available liquidity. The amount of that liquidity is not stated in the cited material here. The 3.7x figure is a company-specific, date-specific disclosure, not a universal ceiling for midstream MLPs. No cross-industry source establishes a single “safe” leverage or coverage threshold.
Step 4: Determine what “fee-based” revenue actually means
Classify the payment mechanism
Read commercial descriptions, revenue footnotes and risk factors instead of accepting “fee-based” as a complete risk label.

|---|---|
| Fixed demand or reservation charge | Produces payment for reserved capacity even when physical throughput is lower, subject to contract terms and customer credit. |
| Per-unit fee | Scales with transported or processed volume; a production decline can reduce revenue. |
| Minimum-volume commitment | Requires payment for a contracted minimum, but deficiency rights, make-up provisions and customer solvency determine how much cash is collected. |
| Ship-or-pay or take-or-pay | Can protect revenue against unused capacity, yet enforcement, exemptions and counterparty strength matter. |
| Commodity-linked margin | Retains exposure to prices or spreads even if the service is described as fee-based. |
| Keep-whole or percent-of-proceeds arrangement | Links earnings to commodity prices and processing economics more directly than a fixed tariff. |
| Deficiency payment | May shift cash between periods; check whether it is collectible, refundable or offset by future volumes. |
DT Midstream’s 2025 Form 10-K describes firm-service contracts that typically use long-term fixed demand charges or minimum-volume commitments. Such terms can support revenue independently of actual throughput, but the description is not a guarantee that every contract, customer or MLP has the same protection.
Inspect duration and renewal exposure
For each major system, list contract start and end dates, renewal options, escalation clauses, volume commitments, termination rights and the percentage of revenue that must be renegotiated within one, three and five years. A long contract with a weak counterparty may be less dependable than a shorter contract with a financially strong customer and multiple alternative users.

Ask whether competing pipelines, storage sites or processing plants can connect the same supply or demand center at a lower cost. Recontracting risk depends on basin production, local capacity, customer switching costs and the cost of connecting alternatives, not merely on the printed contract term.
Step 5: Identify customers, sponsors and who controls the cash
Measure concentration
Extract the largest customers, their percentage of revenue, contract type, credit quality and renewal dates. Distinguish a diversified set of investment-grade shippers from a single sponsor or producer that can influence volumes across several assets.
Recommended Free Tools
MPLX’s 2025 Form 10-K states that MPC accounted for 48 percent of MPLX’s total revenues and other income for the year ended December 31, 2025. That is an MPLX-specific concentration figure, not a midstream-sector statistic.
Understand sponsor alignment and conflicts
Record who owns the general partner, common units and incentive rights; who appoints directors; and whether the sponsor controls dropdowns, acquisitions, asset sales or financing decisions. The same MPLX filing says MPC owned the general partner and approximately 64 percent of outstanding common units as of December 31, 2025.
Review related-party agreements for gathering, transportation, operating services, cost allocations and asset purchases. Check whether terms are at market, how conflicts are approved, and whether the partnership can reject an unattractive transaction. Sponsor ownership can align interests, but it can also make cash flow dependent on the sponsor’s operating health and strategic choices.
Follow joint-venture cash
For each equity-method investment, compare the partnership’s share of reported earnings with cash distributions actually received. A profitable joint venture may retain cash for its own projects or face debt restrictions, leaving the parent unable to use the accounting income to support distributions.

Separate maintenance from growth capital
Read the definition of maintenance capital and test whether it covers integrity management, compressor replacements, dredging, cyber controls, environmental remediation and regulatory upgrades. Asset age and inspection history can make maintenance spending rise even when throughput is stable.
Best Value
For growth projects, record total expected cost, spending already incurred, in-service date, contracted volumes, customer commitments, expected return and remaining permits. Delays or cost overruns can consume retained cash and increase debt before revenue begins.
Review the complete risk list
- Customer defaults, bankruptcies or production declines can reduce cash even where contracts appear protected.
- Competing infrastructure can pressure tariffs and renewal terms.
- Regulatory, tariff, permitting and environmental changes can delay projects or raise costs.
- Weather, outages, accidents and cyber incidents can interrupt service and create liabilities.
- Aging assets may require unplanned maintenance or replacement.
- Joint ventures may require additional funding when partners cannot contribute.
- Commodity exposure can remain through processing margins, keep-whole arrangements or minimum-volume shortfalls.
Fee-based revenue lowers direct price sensitivity in some arrangements; it does not eliminate volume, counterparty, operational, regulatory or financing risk.
How to compare two or more MLPs without misleading yourself
Use identical periods, entity boundaries and definitions. Before ranking partnerships, complete this comparison grid:
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer for every issuer |
|---|---|
| DCF bridge | What is the starting measure, which adjustments are made, and how does the result reconcile to GAAP? |
| Coverage | What claims are in the denominator, and is coverage stable during weaker operating periods? |
| Retained cash | After all distributions, where did cash go: debt repayment, growth, acquisitions, buybacks or working capital? |
| Leverage | How are debt and EBITDA defined, what is the trajectory, and how much covenant room remains? |
| Liquidity | What cash and committed facilities are available, and when do maturities require refinancing? |
| Contract mix | What share uses demand charges, minimum volumes, per-unit fees or commodity-sensitive margins? |
| Renewal risk | How much revenue expires in each future period, and are alternative customers or routes available? |
| Customer and sponsor concentration | Who supplies revenue, who owns control, and what related-party terms apply? |
| Joint ventures | How much cash is received versus accounting income, and can the partnership fund the venture if needed? |
| Assets and capital | What integrity work, growth spending, project execution and basin or customer risks could absorb cash? |
An apparent advantage can be a definition difference. Reconcile maintenance-capital treatment, equity-method distributions, preferred claims and adjusted EBITDA before presenting side-by-side ratios.
A repeatable worksheet for your next filing review
- Set the period: choose the latest quarter, trailing twelve months and the prior two comparable periods.
- Copy reported figures: GAAP net income, operating cash flow, adjusted EBITDA, DCF, distributions, debt, cash, interest and capital spending.
- Rebuild DCF: enter every adjustment with its footnote and classify it as recurring, timing-related or unusual.
- Normalize distributions: include preferred, general-partner and noncontrolling claims consistently.
- Calculate coverage: show quarterly, trailing and stressed results rather than one headline ratio.
- Reconcile retained cash: trace post-distribution cash to debt reduction, projects, acquisitions, buybacks and the balance sheet.
- Map debt: list maturities, rates, collateral, covenants, revolver capacity and refinancing dates.
- Model stress: reduce EBITDA, raise interest rates and delay cash receipts or project completion.
- Read contracts: classify each major revenue stream by fee type, term, minimum volume, escalation and renewal exposure.
- Check concentration: identify top customers, sponsor ownership, related-party agreements and joint-venture cash access.
- Audit capital needs: challenge maintenance classifications and verify growth-project budgets and returns.
- Write the conclusion: state which assumptions support the distribution, what could break them and what filing data would change your view.
Signals that deserve extra scrutiny
Potential warning signs
- Coverage rises only after increasingly large “one-time” adjustments.
- DCF is positive, but cash and liquidity fall while debt grows.
- A large maturity wall arrives before expected project cash flow.
- Leverage improves only because EBITDA is aggressively annualized or synergies are included.
- Revenue is called fee-based, yet contracts contain substantial commodity-linked or volume-sensitive components.
- A sponsor or one customer supplies a large share of revenue and has weakening credit or production.
- Maintenance capital remains unusually low despite aging or heavily utilized assets.
- Joint-venture earnings materially exceed cash distributions received.
More constructive evidence
- The DCF bridge is stable, transparent and reconciles cleanly to GAAP and operating cash flow.
- Coverage persists through weaker periods after all senior and noncontrolling claims.
- Retained cash consistently reduces debt or funds projects within budget.
- Maturities are staggered, liquidity is committed and covenant headroom remains visible under stress.
- Contracts combine credible counterparties, long terms, enforceable minimums and diversified routes or customers.
- Maintenance needs are funded before discretionary growth spending.
Tax and personal-investor considerations
MLP ownership can produce partnership-specific tax reporting, including a Schedule K-1 and potentially complex state or multistate filing issues. The tax result depends on the partnership, your account type, residence, holding period and other personal facts. Use the issuer’s tax information and consult a qualified tax professional for individual advice; a distribution analysis cannot determine your personal tax liability.
What this framework can—and cannot—tell you
The process can show whether a declared distribution is supported by the issuer’s stated cash-generation bridge, how much balance-sheet capacity exists, and which contract or customer assumptions matter most. It cannot guarantee a future payment, predict every refinancing outcome or substitute for reading the underlying filings.
There is no verified cross-industry benchmark in the cited materials for a universally safe yield, distribution-coverage ratio or leverage ratio. Treat MPLX’s 3.7x leverage disclosure, its 48 percent MPC revenue concentration and approximately 64 percent MPC common-unit ownership as dated company facts, not sector rules. The decision should rest on your reconciled numbers, contract durability, liquidity and downside cases.
