The best live chat app is the one that fits your support workload, channels, budget, and data requirements—not necessarily the one with the longest feature list. Compare candidates on seven factors: total cost and limits, scalability, ease of use, AI and human handoff, integrations, security and privacy, and workflow and reporting. Then pilot real customer questions before committing.
Compare the seven factors at a glance
| Factor | What to compare | What to test or confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Total cost and limits | Per-agent or per-seat pricing, billing term, included usage, and features gated by plan | Estimate the bill at current and expected usage; identify seat, conversation, automation, channel, and reporting limits |
| Scalability | Supported team size, conversation volume, automation, and reporting | Find the thresholds that trigger an upgrade and determine what changes when the team grows |
| Ease of use | Customer-facing chat widget and agent workspace | Try opening chat as a customer and handling concurrent conversations as an agent |
| AI and human handoff | Automated question handling, escalation paths, and context passed to staff | Test routine questions and a complex case that needs a person; check transcript continuity |
| Integrations | Connections to CRM, help desk, knowledge base, commerce platform, and feedback tools | Confirm which customer and order details appear in the agent workflow |
| Security and privacy | Collected data, access controls, provider documentation, and relevant privacy obligations | Review permissions and security materials with the people responsible for customer data |
| Workflow and reporting | Routing, canned replies, offline capture, ticketing, and useful service measures | Check whether the app supports the team’s actual handling process and reports its chosen goals |
1. Compare total cost, not just the advertised starting price
Live chat pricing can be per agent or per seat, and an annual-billing price is not directly comparable with a monthly rate. The entry tier may also omit capabilities your team needs or limit the number of seats, conversations, automations, channels, integrations, or reports. Work out the cost of the configuration you would actually use, including how the total changes as agents and usage increase.

A Zendesk comparison page accessed in 2026 displayed example starting prices of $20 per person per month for LiveChat when billed annually and $39 per seat per month for Intercom. These are vendor-published snapshots, not normalized quotes: they may differ by region, billing terms, plan contents, and later price changes. Confirm the current price and included features directly before buying.
Ask whether the listed price is per agent, per seat, or for an account; whether it requires annual billing; and which usage limits apply. A cheaper starting tier can cost more in practice if essential routing, reporting, channels, or automation require an upgrade.

- Lightweight and comfortable for long gaming sessions
- Chat in crystal-clear digital wideband audio
- 3.5mm audio connection with inline audio controls
- Cable length 3.6ft
2. Check whether the app can scale with support demand
Scalability is more than adding agent accounts. As your business grows, more conversations may arrive at once, more staff may need access, and the team may need more routing rules, automation, or reporting. Confirm which plan covers your current operation and which thresholds prompt a change.
- Estimate the number of agents who need access now and over the period you are planning for.
- Ask how the service counts usage and what happens when a plan limit is reached.
- Check whether workflows, reports, and administrative controls remain available at the next team size.
- Consider whether the app still fits if support expands beyond the website to other channels.
Do not compare only a current-month bill. Compare the cost and operating impact at both present and expected usage, including any limits that could interrupt a workflow or force a plan change.
3. Test the customer widget and agent workspace
A chat tool has two interfaces to get right: the widget customers use and the workspace agents use. A clear customer widget should be easy to find and use on the devices your visitors actually use. In the agent workspace, staff need to find the conversation, see useful context, manage more than one chat when needed, and continue a discussion without losing the thread.

Use a trial or free tier to check both sides of the experience. Recreate the customer journey on your actual site and devices rather than judging the widget from a vendor demo. Have agents handle realistic conversations and note where they must switch screens or search for context.

4. Evaluate AI alongside human handoff
Automation may help with routine questions, but a chatbot is not a complete replacement for support agents. Judge it by what it can handle reliably in your workflows and how it transfers a conversation when a person is needed—not by the presence of an AI label.
Test at least one common, straightforward question and one complicated question that requires staff judgment. Check whether the escalation path is clear, whether an agent receives the conversation history and relevant context, and whether the customer can continue without repeating information. Confirm which automation capabilities are included in the plan and whether their usage is limited or priced separately.
5. Verify integrations that reduce context switching
List the systems agents already rely on: CRM, help desk or ticketing, knowledge base, commerce platform, and customer feedback tools. A useful integration puts relevant information into the support workflow or passes the conversation to the right system; a long integration directory alone does not show that it will save agents time.

6. Review security, privacy, and app permissions
Before connecting a chat app to customer data, understand what information it collects, who can access it, and what provider security documentation is available. Consider the privacy requirements that apply where your customers live, and involve the person responsible for customer data in the review.
Permissions are specific to each app. For example, the Shopify App Store listing for Shopify Inbox disclosed access requests involving customer, product, order, staff, analytics, and store data when accessed in 2026. That is a reason to inspect an app’s own permission screen before installation, not evidence that every chat app requests the same data.
7. Match workflows and reporting to the service you provide
Map the way your team handles a conversation from arrival to resolution. Depending on the support operation, the app may need messaging, routing, canned replies, offline contact capture, or ticketing. Make sure the product supports the process agents actually follow rather than making them work around the software.
Choose reports based on service goals. Measures cited in TechRadar Pro’s selection guide include response time, average ticket resolution time, resolution rate, and interactions per ticket. Decide which measures matter to your team, then check that the app defines and reports them in a useful way. A dashboard is less valuable if it does not answer the questions your team uses to manage service.

How the common options are positioned
Vendor descriptions can help build an initial shortlist, but they are not independent performance rankings. Zendesk’s comparison page, accessed in 2026, describes Zendesk in terms of automated resolutions across channels, LiveChat for website-based conversations, HubSpot for teams already using its CRM, and Intercom for messaging-first support. Those descriptions indicate intended fit, not proof that one product performs better in a controlled comparison.
Shopify Inbox is a Shopify-native option listed as free. Its Shopify App Store listing describes live chat, AI responses, product recommendations, catalog and policy context, customer insights, and analytics. The listing showed a 4.5-out-of-5 rating from 5,795 reviews when accessed in 2026; ratings and review counts change, and user feedback is not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of results for a particular store.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a practical pilot before choosing
A short, structured pilot can reveal gaps that a feature checklist will miss. Use the same scenarios for each candidate so the comparison is useful.
- Choose representative questions. Recreate three to five common customer questions and one complex question that needs a person.
- Follow the agent workflow. Check access to customer and order context, routing, transcript continuity, and escalation to staff.
- Test the customer experience. Put the widget on the actual site and try it on the devices customers use.
- Inspect plan boundaries. Confirm what is included and the limits for seats, conversations, automation, channels, integrations, and reporting.
- Review data handling. Read the provider’s privacy and security materials and the app’s requested permissions with the team responsible for customer data.
- Check reporting and cost. Compare the available measures with service goals, then estimate cost at current and expected usage.
Keep notes on where customers or agents encounter friction, what requires manual work, and whether a handoff retains the necessary context. This gives the team concrete evidence for its decision without assuming that the most feature-rich app is the right one.

How to choose for your business
- For a website-first support operation: prioritize a simple widget, efficient agent handling, and clear offline capture if staff are not always available.
- For a growing team: focus on seat and usage limits, routing, reporting, and the cost of moving to a higher tier.
- For an online store: examine commerce context and permissions closely; a Shopify-native option may be relevant if the store already runs on Shopify.
- For an AI-assisted team: make escalation and transcript continuity part of the pilot, alongside the routine questions automation is expected to handle.
- For a team with an established support stack: prioritize integrations that surface customer context and preserve the workflow across CRM, ticketing, and knowledge systems.
Choose the candidate that meets the team’s necessary workflow and data requirements at a sustainable cost. Treat vendor positioning and review scores as inputs to a shortlist, not substitutes for testing the work your agents and customers will actually do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a business choose the live chat app with the most features?
No. A larger feature set is useful only when it supports the channels, workflows, reporting, and data practices the team needs. A pilot using real customer scenarios is a better test of fit.
Are live chat app ratings a reliable way to compare products?
Ratings summarize platform user feedback and can change over time. They are not controlled comparative studies and do not guarantee a particular outcome for your business.
Is live chat enough if customers need help when agents are offline?
Not necessarily. Check whether the app supports offline capture or another way to route a request for follow-up, and test that path as part of the customer journey.
