Evaluate a humanoid robot as part of a specific task and complete workcell—not as a machine in isolation. Define the hazards, examine the integrated system against applicable requirements, demand task-specific safety evidence, validate it at the site, and compare candidates on capability, reliability, integration, support, and lifecycle cost. A humanoid design or successful factory pilot does not, by itself, show that a system is safe or suitable for hazardous work.

Start with the task, not the robot

“Hazardous industrial task” is too broad to evaluate as a single use case. A robot handling sheet metal beside a production line faces different exposures from one working around high-voltage equipment, toxic materials, extreme heat, or a potentially explosive atmosphere. Suitability depends on the actual operation, location, equipment, people, and foreseeable failures.

  • The operation, work sequence, cycle time, shifts, and expected throughput.
  • Tooling or gripper, payload, reach, access routes, and whether the robot must walk, roll, or remain fixed.
  • Materials, process conditions, nearby machines, and the hazards the robot is intended to reduce.
  • People who may work nearby or enter the area, including operators, cleaners, maintenance staff, and emergency responders.
  • Setup, teaching, loading, fault recovery, maintenance, and other periods when normal automatic operation is interrupted.
  • Likely disruptions such as dropped parts, blocked paths, sensor faults, communication loss, unexpected human entry, or a stopped production line.

Then identify hazards introduced or changed by automation. A robot may remove a person from one exposure while adding hazards from movement, tooling, stored energy, control faults, or recovery work. The evaluation should address the whole operating life of the application, not just its ideal production cycle.

Understand which safety rules and standards apply

OSHA requirements and consensus standards are not interchangeable

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration says, “There are currently no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry.” Its Robotics Standards page also cautions that listed national consensus standards “are NOT OSHA regulations.” That distinction matters: a consensus standard can be a relevant technical reference, but it should not be described as an OSHA regulation or treated as proof that a workplace meets its obligations.

Identify the workplace rules that apply in the installation’s jurisdiction, then use relevant standards and risk-assessment methods as part of the site’s broader safety process. OSHA’s Technical Manual discusses robot application hazards, installation in accordance with manufacturer requirements and applicable standards, and reliable systems and timely maintenance in hazardous conditions. Because it references older editions in places, check current editions and local requirements rather than using the manual as a stand-alone compliance checklist.

Check the scope of the industrial robot standards

As of October 2026, ISO lists ISO 10218-1:2025 as its current industrial-robot standard edition. Part 1 addresses the robot as a machine; ISO 10218-2:2025 addresses integration of robot systems and applications. The distinction is important for humanoids: documentation about the robot alone cannot establish the safety of the cell, tooling, software, interfaces, work procedures, or site integration.

ISO’s published scope excludes certain hazards and environments, including potentially explosive environments, nuclear environments, underground use, and dangerous loads such as molten metals or acids and bases. A factory location does not automatically bring those cases within the standard’s scope. Identify out-of-scope hazards and assess them under other applicable requirements and site-specific processes.

Do not treat collaborative-robot guidance as a blanket approval

ISO/TS 15066:2016 specifies safety requirements for collaborative industrial robot systems and their work environment, supplementing ISO 10218-1 and -2. ISO reviewed and confirmed it in 2022, and lists it as current. Its stated scope is industrial robot systems covered by ISO 10218. It does not, on its own, certify a humanoid robot or establish that a particular task involving people nearby is safe.

Require evidence for the complete application

Ask the supplier and integrator for evidence that addresses the proposed task and operating conditions. A product brochure, general safety statement, or robot-level document is not a substitute for an assessment of the integrated application.

  • Applicable requirements: Which laws, standards, and editions were used, and which hazards or operating conditions fall outside their scope?
  • Risk assessment: What task-specific assessment covers normal operation, setup, teaching, foreseeable misuse, faults, recovery, and maintenance? Who performed it, and who is responsible for keeping it current?
  • Safety functions and limits: What functions detect or control hazardous conditions? Request their documented behavior, operating limits, failure response, and validation evidence; do not infer safety capability from a sensor or feature name.
  • Safeguarding: What barriers, partitions, interlocks, sensing, restricted zones, or other measures are part of the design? What site changes are required?
  • Procedures: How are startup, stopping, emergency response, fault recovery, cleaning, teaching, and maintenance performed? What training and access controls are required?
  • Failure evidence: How does the system respond to loss of communications, power, sensor input, or a machine interface? How are faults reported, contained, diagnosed, and safely cleared?
  • Responsibility: Which party—the robot maker, integrator, or site owner—owns each design decision, validation, software change, maintenance task, and incident report?

Request the supplier’s current technical documentation, conformity evidence relevant to the market, safety-function descriptions, stated operating limits, and customer references. Have qualified people assess the proposed application under local requirements. Evidence that a component meets a requirement is not automatically evidence that the assembled workcell does.

Validate in stages at the intended site

  1. Screen the use case: Confirm task fit, operating limits, hazards, and whether the intended environment raises issues outside the cited standards’ scope. Stop or redesign the proposal if the supplier cannot address a material hazard.
  2. Test representative scenarios: Use actual tools, parts, interfaces, and operating sequences in controlled trials. Include foreseeable interruptions and fault recovery, not just smooth demonstration cycles.
  3. Review the integrated design: Bring occupational safety, production engineering, IT, logistics, operators, and maintenance into the review. Check site safeguarding, communications, procedures, and service access.
  4. Deploy under controlled conditions: Define operating boundaries, supervision, incident reporting, success criteria, and authority to pause or stop the trial before production use.
  5. Expand only on evidence: Compare actual task results and safety observations with the criteria set in advance. Reassess when the task, software, tooling, layout, or operating conditions change.

A staged process helps expose integration needs before a wider rollout, but it is not a universal certification protocol. The required review and approvals depend on the application and jurisdiction.

Read pilot reports for what they establish

Public pilot accounts can indicate that a robot has been used in a particular context. They should not be read as independent validation, certification, or proof of performance in a different hazardous environment.

Report What the account says What it does not establish
BMW Group, February 2026: Figure 02 at Spartanburg, United States BMW reports a 2025 pilot handling removal and positioning of sheet-metal parts for welding. BMW says the robot worked ten-hour shifts Monday through Friday over ten months, supported production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles, moved more than 90,000 components, took approximately 1.2 million steps, and accumulated approximately 1,250 operating hours. These are BMW-reported figures, not independent measurements. They describe repetitive manufacturing work; they do not validate safety or performance in explosive atmospheres, toxic materials, extreme heat, confined spaces, or other hazardous tasks.
BMW Group, September 2026: AEON at Leipzig BMW describes AEON work in high-voltage battery assembly and component manufacturing. The account says experience at Spartanburg led to revised safety concepts with additional barriers and partitions, as well as improved 5G coverage. The account illustrates plant-level changes that may accompany deployment; it is not an independent assessment of another site’s application or a substitute for task-specific evidence.
Apptronik and Jabil: Apollo manufacturing pilot announcement The companies announced a pilot intended to validate tasks including inspection, sorting, kitting, lineside delivery, fixture placement, and sub-assembly. An announcement of planned validation and intended tasks is not evidence of completed deployment, certification, or suitability for hazardous work.

BMW’s February 2026 account describes its evaluation sequence as theoretical assessment, laboratory testing with real use cases, initial plant deployment, and pilot operation if earlier stages succeed. It also says production IT, occupational safety, process management, and shop-floor logistics were involved in the early Figure 02 evaluation. That is a customer-reported example of staged work, not a standard every buyer can assume has been followed.

Compare candidates on the same operating basis

When evaluating more than one supplier, give each the same task description and request comparable evidence under representative conditions. Keep safety requirements as gates: a favorable score for speed or cost should not compensate for an unresolved safety issue.

Evaluation area Questions to put to each supplier
Task fit Can the system reach, lift, manipulate, and position the required parts with the proposed tooling? Does its mobility fit the layout? What cycle time and operating limits are demonstrated for this task?
Safety evidence Which requirements and editions apply? What assessment, safety functions, safeguarding, fault response, recovery procedures, and environmental limits are documented for the complete application?
Reliability and autonomy What are the task-specific successful-cycle rate, uptime, intervention frequency, recovery time, and operating hours under representative conditions? How are results recorded and failures classified?
Integration What tooling, machine interfaces, plant IT and communications, facility changes, procedures, and integrator work are required? Who owns each interface and safety decision?
Operations and support What training, spare parts, maintenance intervals, service coverage, response arrangements, software change controls, and incident-reporting processes are included?
Lifecycle economics What are the installed and integration costs, safeguarding and site-modification expenses, training and staffing needs, energy and consumables, expected downtime and maintenance, and assumptions about useful life?

Ask for operational measures tied to the intended task: uptime, successful cycle rate, interventions, recovery, shift coverage, maintenance burden, and support response. Set acceptance thresholds for the site before a trial begins, and record how each measure will be collected. There is no universal threshold or verified general failure-rate benchmark established for humanoid robots in hazardous work; likewise, a particular vendor’s target is not achieved performance.

For economics, compare total installed and operating costs over the same intended service period, with assumptions stated. Include safeguarding and integration work rather than comparing robot purchase prices alone. Current pricing and universal cost benchmarks are not established here, so request itemized, comparable figures directly from candidates.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
