Evaluate cement stocks by comparing regional demand exposure, sales volume and utilisation, realisation per tonne, costs, expansion returns, balance-sheet strength and valuation on consistent definitions. This is a framework for assessing Indian cement companies—not a recommendation to buy any particular share. Annual reports provide useful company disclosures, but forecasts are management expectations and should be checked against the latest results.
The key is to connect the operating measures rather than read them in isolation. More tonnes sold may not mean stronger economics if realisation falls or costs rise; more capacity may add value only if it is commissioned, utilised and financed responsibly. For comparisons to be meaningful, align fiscal periods, consolidation scope and each company’s definitions.

Start with the market a cement company can actually serve
Cement is bulky and costly to transport, so a company’s regional footprint, logistics reach and competition in local markets can matter as much as national demand. A company exposed to a fast-growing region may have different prospects from one whose plants face intense local competition or a supply of new capacity that outpaces demand. A national demand figure is useful context, but it does not show how much demand lies within a particular company’s practical market or what share it can serve.

Assess demand drivers such as housing, infrastructure and other construction, then compare them with the company’s operating regions and planned capacity. In its FY 2025-26 annual report, ACC reported Indian cement demand growth of 6.5–7.5% for FY 2025-26 and forecast around 5% growth for FY 2026-27. These are issuer-reported estimates and outlook, not independently verified realized outcomes. The second figure is a forecast, not a result. See ACC’s business opportunities discussion.

Use demand information as a starting point for questions, not as a stand-alone reason to expect a company’s earnings to grow. Does the business have plants and logistics reach in markets where construction demand is relevant? Is capacity being added by the company or its competitors? Could local supply growth make it harder to sell incremental output at adequate prices? No regional market share dataset is provided here, so avoid implying that a national growth estimate proves a company-specific advantage.
- Map plants and sales regions against the company’s stated market exposure.
- Look for evidence of local competition, transport constraints and capacity additions.
- Separate industry demand from the company’s own ability to win sales in its markets.
- Distinguish reported conditions from management’s estimates and forecasts, and revisit the outlook when newer results are available.
Read volume, utilisation and price together
Sales volume shows how much cement a company sold, but it does not show whether the additional output earned adequate prices or whether plants were efficiently used. Read volume alongside capacity utilisation, realisation per tonne and changes in product and geographic mix. These measures answer different questions: volume describes sales, utilisation relates output to capacity, and realisation indicates sales revenue per tonne under the company’s stated definition.
For example, ACC reported annual cement sales volume of 43.9 million tonnes for FY 2025-26. That is a company-specific reported result, not a benchmark for other issuers. JSW Cement’s prospectus defines cement realisation per tonne as cement sales revenue divided by cement volume sold. Use each company’s own stated definition and keep the calculation consistent when comparing issuers. If reported values use different definitions or scopes, a side-by-side table can create a false impression of comparability.

If sales rise, check whether utilisation also changes and whether the company’s realisation holds up. If volume rises while realisation declines, examine whether product or regional mix changed; do not infer the cause from the headline figures alone. Conversely, a change in average realisation might reflect mix as well as pricing. Company disclosures can help explain these movements, but the comparison should keep each metric’s period and denominator visible.
- Volume: Check the reported period and whether the figure is cement-only or includes other products. Compare growth with the same company’s prior periods and with peers only when the basis matches.
- Utilisation: Compare production with available capacity, taking account of commissioning and ramp-up of new plants. A new asset may increase the capacity base before it contributes a mature level of output.
- Realisation: Examine revenue per tonne and whether price changes or mix shifts explain its movement. Keep company-specific formulas consistent; JSW’s prospectus, for example, defines it using cement sales revenue divided by cement volume sold.
- Mix: Check whether changes in trade, non-trade, regional or product sales alter the headline average. Compare category definitions and sales bases before drawing conclusions.
Growth in one operating measure should therefore be tested against the others. A volume figure is not an earnings measure; utilisation is not a price measure; and realisation alone does not show the cost of producing and delivering each tonne. Together, the measures offer a more useful operating picture, while still requiring cost and financial checks.
Test whether product mix improves earnings
Premium products, branded trade sales and blended cement can affect both realised prices and input requirements. A larger share of a product category is not automatically a financial improvement: check whether the change lifts realisation or per-tonne earnings, and whether the company defines the category consistently over time. Mix can alter the average reported figures, so it is important to ask what is changing behind a rise or fall in realisation.
ACC said premium cement made up 44% of its trade sales in FY 2025-26 and blended cement was 84% of sales. Those figures describe ACC’s reported mix for that year; they should not be compared with another company’s percentage unless the sales base and category definitions match. ACC discusses these measures in its strategic priorities and progress report.

They are not interchangeable percentages. When assessing a company’s mix strategy, record the precise denominator, period and category description alongside the number. If those details change between years or differ among issuers, use the trend cautiously rather than treating the percentages as directly comparable.

Then test whether the mix change appears in the economics. Compare realisation per tonne and EBITDA per tonne where disclosed, while accounting for other changes in costs and definitions. A higher premium or blended share may be strategically relevant, but the figures provided here do not establish that any one product category necessarily delivers a particular margin. Avoid assuming a mix percentage alone predicts earnings.
Compare costs per tonne with realisation
Power and fuel, freight, raw materials and other operating costs can move independently of cement prices. Where the issuer reports them, track costs per tonne over time and compare their direction with realisation and EBITDA per tonne. This helps distinguish a volume gain from an improvement in unit economics. The practical question is whether revenues per tonne and operating costs are moving in a way that supports resilient per-tonne earnings—not simply whether a single cost line is lower than a peer’s.
ACC reported FY 2025-26 raw-material costs of ₹818 per tonne and power and fuel costs of ₹829 per tonne. It also reported EBITDA of ₹672 per tonne, including other income. Definitions and the inclusion of other income matter, so these figures are not a sector target or a directly comparable margin measure for every issuer. See ACC’s reported cost and performance measures.

Instead, use them as reference points within ACC’s own reporting, then look for comparable measures from another company. If a peer does not disclose the same cost categories or denominator, state that limitation rather than forcing a comparison.
ACC also identified global energy markets, logistics constraints and currency movements as cost pressures in its business opportunities discussion. These are factors to monitor, not a guarantee that costs will move in any particular direction. Fuel and freight deserve attention because the report identifies energy and logistics as pressures; currency movements are another reported risk to consider. No quantified impact of each on future margins is provided, so do not assign an unsupported numerical effect.
A useful review follows the same measures across multiple periods: realisation per tonne; power and fuel cost per tonne; raw-material cost per tonne; freight where disclosed; and EBITDA per tonne with the company’s definition. Note whether apparent improvement comes alongside a change in product or regional mix, and whether the reporting includes other income. The aim is to judge the direction and resilience of unit economics, not to treat one year’s reported number as a permanent margin level.
Judge expansion by returns, not capacity targets
Capacity growth can support future sales, but announced or planned capacity is not the same as commissioned capacity, utilized output or profitable growth. Separate installed, commissioned and planned capacity. For newly built or acquired assets, consider ramp-up and utilization alongside the capital required to integrate and operate them. Keep the status of each addition clear: a target or project plan does not represent production already available to sell.
Then weigh capital expenditure and funding against demand, expected utilization and returns. ACC disclosed ₹1,445 crore of growth capex/investment in FY 2025-26. Ambuja’s annual report describes capacity additions and integration, while JSW Cement’s FY 2024-25 annual report provides a contrasting company example of debt and utilisation. These issuer disclosures illustrate why capacity plans, integration and financing should be assessed together; targets are not proof of future earnings.

Expansion analysis links the operating and financial sections of the review. A planned addition may increase potential output, but the investor still needs to examine whether the company can place that output in markets it serves, ramp the asset and fund the investment. No universal return threshold or company-by-company forecast of project returns is established here. Treat management plans as expectations, then compare later disclosures with what was commissioned, utilised and earned.
- Identify what capacity is already operating, what has been commissioned and what remains planned.
- Check whether recent additions are ramping up and contributing to utilization and sales.
- Assess capex and funding needs against the company’s balance sheet and operating cash generation.
- Ask whether the added capital can earn an adequate return if demand or pricing is weaker than management expects.
- Consider integration as well as construction: Ambuja’s report describes both capacity additions and integration, while JSW’s report offers a contrasting example involving debt and utilisation.
ACC’s ₹1,445 crore growth capex/investment is a reported amount for FY 2025-26, not an estimate of what another company should spend or what future spending will earn. Compare investment amounts only with care: company size, reporting period, project stage and funding scope matter. No standardized peer capex-return calculation is provided, so these figures support questions about discipline and execution rather than a direct ranking by rupees spent.
Examine debt, cash and working capital
Debt and cash affect the risks attached to a company’s operating earnings. Review borrowings, finance costs, cash, working capital and net debt relative to earnings, and note the reporting date and consolidation scope for every figure. Consider whether the company’s financial position appears consistent with its planned investment needs; operating growth and financing should be evaluated together.
ACC reported zero debt, ₹918 crore in cash and cash equivalents, and working capital of 45 days in FY 2025-26. JSW Cement reported debt and disclosed its own net-debt-to-EBITDA definition in its FY 2024-25 annual report. The figures cannot be compared fairly without aligning fiscal dates, standalone or consolidated scope, and metric definitions. Do not assume that similarly named ratios are calculated the same way.
The 45-day working-capital figure is a reported ACC measure; preserve the issuer’s label and reporting context instead of assuming a different calculation. For any company, inspect how the reported number is defined and whether the same basis is available for prior periods and peers. For net debt relative to EBITDA, verify which debt, cash and EBITDA inputs are included and what reporting period is used. A ratio without its definition can conceal rather than resolve differences.
Debt is especially relevant when considering expansion because borrowing, finance costs and planned investment affect the overall financial picture. Cash and operating cash generation also matter when assessing the capacity to fund projects. ACC and JSW are presented as contrasting examples, not a complete peer balance-sheet table: the figures do not provide a basis for claiming that every company with debt is financially weak or that zero debt alone makes a stock attractive. Keep the analysis specific to disclosures, dates and definitions.
Value the shares using comparable periods and definitions
Operational quality does not by itself establish whether a share is attractively priced. Common comparison tools include enterprise value/EBITDA and price/earnings; enterprise value per tonne may also be considered if the capacity and debt treatment are consistent. Compare companies using matching periods, a consistent peer set and the company’s own history. For each multiple, record the underlying period and whether the earnings figure is historical or forward-looking.
Recommended Free Tools
Interpret multiples in the context of the earnings cycle. If earnings are unusually high or low, a current multiple may give a misleading impression. Consider whether planned capacity and its expected contribution are already reflected in the share price. A comparison is only useful if both the numerator and denominator are on a comparable basis: enterprise value incorporates debt treatment, while earnings measures depend on accounting period, scope and definitions.

Enterprise value per tonne also needs a consistent capacity basis; distinguish operating capacity from planned additions rather than silently treating future capacity as current. If a company’s capacity schedule or debt definition differs from a peer’s, disclose the limitation in the comparison. No authoritative current valuation range or fair-value threshold is established here, so no multiple should be called inherently cheap or expensive without additional valuation evidence.
Use valuation as the final part of the operating review, not a substitute for it. A company may have rising volumes or an expansion plan and still require a closer look at realisation, cost per tonne, financing and the assumptions built into its price. This article does not supply current share prices, current multiples, fair values or a verified valuation dataset. It therefore supports a method for comparing valuation, not a price target or a conclusion about which share is currently undervalued.

Before ranking companies, reconcile the accounting period, consolidation scope and metric definitions. Then compare them on the same set of questions. A useful worksheet can put each company in a column and each question in a row, with a note for the reporting period and source beside every figure. Mark missing or non-comparable data explicitly rather than filling gaps with assumptions.
- Market: Which regions does the company serve, and what are the local demand, logistics and competition conditions? Separate the broad Indian demand outlook from exposure in markets where the company can actually sell.
- Operations: How are sales volume and utilisation changing, including at new or acquired assets? Note capacity status and ramp-up so that a larger capacity base does not get mistaken for sold output.
- Pricing and mix: What is happening to realisation per tonne, premium products and blended cement, using comparable definitions? Keep percentages’ denominators and the company’s realisation formula visible.
- Costs: How are energy, freight and raw-material costs per tonne moving relative to realisation? Check whether EBITDA per tonne includes other income before comparing it with another disclosure.
- Expansion: What capacity is operating versus planned, what funding is needed, and is execution translating into utilization? Consider capex, integration and the possibility that demand or pricing may be weaker than expected.
- Financial position: How do debt, cash generation and working capital compare on aligned dates and definitions? Reconcile net-debt-to-EBITDA inputs and standalone versus consolidated scope.
- Valuation: How do relevant multiples compare across a consistent peer set and the company’s own history, given the earnings cycle and expected capacity additions? Do not infer a fair value from an unsupported sector-wide threshold.
This checklist is designed to make comparison more disciplined, not to produce an automatic score. A peer may disclose more detail than another, and similarly named metrics may not be calculated alike. Record uncertainty and missing information as part of the analysis. Refresh the figures with the latest company reporting before making a decision, especially when demand expectations, costs, capacity schedules or leverage may have changed.
Keep issuer forecasts separate from reported results
Annual reports are company disclosures. Historical operating and financial figures should be identified by company and fiscal year; forecasts and targets should be described as management expectations, not realized outcomes. For example, ACC’s reported FY 2025-26 demand estimate and its roughly 5% FY 2026-27 outlook are issuer statements. They are useful context but are not independent verification of realized industry growth or a guarantee of company performance.
Cement demand, energy and fuel costs, freight, exchange rates, capacity schedules and leverage can change, so refresh the latest company results before making an investment decision. This is an India-focused starting framework, especially using ACC, Ambuja and JSW Cement disclosures. It is not a global sector review, does not provide a cross-country adjustment method, and does not establish current peer valuations or fair-value cutoffs. Use the figures as examples tied to their named issuer and fiscal period, not as recommendations or universal benchmarks.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I compare cement companies?
Compare regional demand exposure, volume and utilisation, realisation per tonne, product mix, costs per tonne, expansion execution, debt and cash generation, and valuation. Align fiscal periods, standalone versus consolidated scope and metric definitions first. If a company does not disclose a comparable measure, note the gap rather than treating the numbers as equivalent.

Which cement stocks should I buy?
This framework does not identify a stock to buy. It does not establish current peer valuations, fair-value thresholds or a recommendation. Assess each company’s operating performance, financial position and valuation using the latest disclosures, then consider your own circumstances and investment objectives.
Best Value
Is higher cement sales volume enough to show a stock is performing well?
No. Read sales volume alongside plant utilisation, realisation per tonne, mix and costs. More sales do not by themselves show whether the output earned adequate prices or improved per-tonne earnings.
Why should I compare cement stocks region by region?
Cement is bulky, so logistics reach and local competition matter alongside national demand. A national demand estimate does not establish how much demand a particular company can serve or whether capacity additions in its markets may outpace demand.
Can I compare premium or blended cement percentages across issuers?
Only after checking the category definition and sales base. ACC reported premium cement at 44% of trade sales and blended cement at 84% of sales in FY 2025-26; those percentages have different stated bases and should not be treated as directly comparable to another issuer without matching definitions.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What does realisation per tonne mean?
JSW Cement’s prospectus defines cement realisation per tonne as cement sales revenue divided by cement volume sold. Use the company’s stated formula and reporting scope when comparing issuers, since definitions can differ.
How should I assess cement-company expansion plans?
Separate operating, commissioned and planned capacity, then check ramp-up, utilisation, capex, funding and whether additions can earn adequate returns under weaker demand or pricing. A capacity target is not proof of future earnings.
Which valuation ratios are useful for cement stocks?
Enterprise value/EBITDA and price/earnings are common comparison tools; enterprise value per tonne may also be considered if capacity and debt treatment are consistent. Compare matching periods, peers and company history, and account for the earnings cycle. No current fair-value threshold is established here.
The Bottom Line
Evaluate cement stocks by connecting the market a company serves to its volume, utilisation, realisation, costs, expansion execution and balance-sheet capacity, then compare valuation on aligned periods and definitions. ACC’s FY 2025-26 figures are issuer-specific examples, not sector benchmarks; forecasts remain management expectations. This is a comparison framework, not a buy recommendation, and the latest results should be checked before investing.
