How to Evaluate Broadcom Stock Beyond Analyst Price Targets

A practical framework for assessing Broadcom stock through segment performance, AI demand, earnings quality, leverage, valuation, and downside risks—not analyst targets alone.

Evaluate Broadcom (NASDAQ: AVGO) by examining its semiconductor and infrastructure software businesses separately, testing whether earnings convert to cash, checking debt and customer concentration, and valuing the company with dated, consistent inputs. Analyst price targets are opinions—not evidence that growth will last or that a particular share price is justified.

The latest detailed quarterly operating figures covered here are from Broadcom’s fiscal Q3 2026, ended August 2, 2026, and its September 2 earnings release. They show powerful growth, particularly in AI semiconductors, but do not by themselves establish how durable that growth is or what the shares are worth today.

Start by separating Broadcom’s two businesses

Broadcom reports semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software. In fiscal Q3 2026, the two segments had different sizes and growth rates, so a single company-wide growth assumption or valuation multiple can hide important differences.

Fiscal Q3 2026 segment Revenue Share of company revenue Year-over-year growth
Semiconductor solutions $20.839 billion 70% 127%
Infrastructure software $8.752 billion 30% 29%

These are Broadcom-reported figures for the quarter ended August 2, 2026. The contrast matters: the semiconductor business was growing much faster in this quarter, while software represented a substantial part of sales with a lower reported growth rate. When considering a valuation, ask what is driving each segment and whether those drivers are likely to persist rather than projecting the fastest segment’s rate across the whole company.

Distinguish AI momentum from durable demand

Broadcom reported $16.7 billion in AI semiconductor revenue in Q3 FY2026, up 221% year over year and 54% sequentially. CEO Hock Tan said demand for custom AI accelerators and networking was very strong. For Q4 FY2026, management guided to $21.7 billion of AI semiconductor revenue. That is a management projection, not a realized result, and a single quarter’s growth does not establish a long-term growth rate.

Test the durability of this business by considering both demand and delivery. Broadcom’s May 3, 2026 Form 10-Q warns that it has historically depended on a small number of end customers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and their customers. It specifically identifies the possibility that losing or materially reducing sales to top customers—including customers for custom AI accelerators or XPUs—could materially affect results and cash flows.

Rank #2
  • How much sales depend on a small set of customers or customer programs?
  • Could customers delay, reduce, or change orders if their plans or demand change?
  • Can Broadcom and its supply chain meet expected demand?
  • Would slower AI orders materially affect company-wide revenue, margins, or cash generation?

Broadcom’s September 2 release also gave Q4 FY2026 guidance of approximately $34.8 billion in revenue and non-GAAP operating income of approximately 66% of projected revenue. Treat both as management estimates rather than reported outcomes; the operating-income margin is explicitly non-GAAP.

Check earnings quality and cash conversion

Broadcom reported Q3 FY2026 revenue of $29.591 billion, up 86% year over year; GAAP operating income of $15.955 billion, up 171%; and GAAP diluted earnings per share of $2.68, up 215%. It also reported non-GAAP operating income growth of 92% year over year. Compare like with like: GAAP results, adjusted results, and cash flow answer different questions.

Broadcom’s non-GAAP adjustments include acquisition-related intangible amortization, stock-based compensation, restructuring and other charges, acquisition-related costs, tax adjustments, and other items. The company cautions that its non-GAAP measures should not be considered a substitute for, or superior to, GAAP measures. It also says exclusions do not imply that excluded costs are non-recurring, infrequent, or unusual.

  1. Read the reconciliation. Identify which items are excluded each period and whether the adjustments recur.
  2. Track stock-based compensation and dilution. Excluding compensation expense does not make its economic cost disappear; compare diluted weighted-average shares across periods.
  3. Compare earnings with cash generation. Look across multiple periods at GAAP earnings, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and share count rather than relying on one quarter.

For Q3 FY2026, Broadcom reported $14.197 billion in cash from operations, up 98% year over year, and $0.532 billion in capital expenditures. Its reported free cash flow was $13.665 billion, up 95%, or 46% of revenue. The company warns that its free-cash-flow measure omits components of the cash-flow statement, is not necessarily discretionary cash available for other purposes, and may not be comparable with similarly named measures from other companies. Check the definition before comparing free-cash-flow yields across businesses.

Put debt, cash, and capital allocation on matching dates

Broadcom’s Q3 release reported $24.0 billion of cash and cash equivalents at August 2, 2026. Its May 3, 2026 Form 10-Q reported $66.720 billion of aggregate indebtedness. These figures are from different dates and may reflect different balance-sheet definitions; subtracting one from the other does not produce a reliable current net-debt figure.

The financial reports index lists a Form 10-Q filed September 10, 2026. For a current assessment, use that filing to refresh cash, debt, maturities, interest expense, share count, segment information, and risk disclosures before calculating leverage. The May filing discusses how debt can reduce financial flexibility and require operating cash flow for debt service.

Evaluate dividends and repurchases alongside investment needs, debt repayment, cash generation, and dilution. Broadcom’s Q3 release approved a quarterly cash dividend of $0.65 per share; future payments and policy can change. The May 10-Q says dividend declarations remain subject to Board approval and that repurchases can fluctuate or stop. A yield calculation also requires a dated share price and explicit payment assumptions.

Build a valuation using consistent, dated inputs

A target price is not a valuation method. To assess whether AVGO’s market price is supported by operating performance, first assemble a dated set of market and financial data. The company’s investor center provides stock information, filings, presentations, and releases, but its displayed stock quote is delayed; it is not a live quote.

  1. Choose a valuation date and share price. Obtain a current market price and share count for that date, then calculate market capitalization. Do not combine a delayed quote with financial figures from an unrelated date without labeling the mismatch.
  2. Use matching financial periods. Calculate ratios using clearly identified trailing or forward periods. Keep reported results separate from management guidance.
  3. Define the earnings measure. For price-to-earnings, state whether earnings are GAAP or adjusted. For enterprise value to operating earnings or EBITDA, explain the measure and the treatment of cash, debt, acquired-intangible amortization, stock compensation, and other adjustments.
  4. Define cash flow consistently. For price-to-free-cash-flow or free-cash-flow yield, specify the cash-flow definition and period. Do not assume Broadcom’s measure is directly comparable with another issuer’s.
  5. Set comparisons that fit the business. Compare Broadcom with its own historical range and with relevant peers, explaining differences in semiconductor and software mix, growth, cyclicality, margins, cash conversion, leverage, and customer concentration. A blended peer multiple may conceal those differences.

A useful comparison should make its assumptions visible: valuation date, share count, financial period, accounting basis, and any adjustments. The figures here do not include a current share price, market capitalization, peer set, or calculated multiple, so they are not enough to claim that AVGO is cheap or expensive today.

Stress-test the risks behind the growth case

Broadcom’s filings identify risks that can affect both the operating outlook and the valuation investors are willing to pay. Consider how the business and your assumptions would respond if one or more of these events occurred:

  • AI demand slows, becomes more volatile, or is delayed by customers.
  • A major customer reduces purchases, or a concentrated customer relationship changes materially.
  • Semiconductor cyclicality, manufacturing constraints, or supply-chain disruption limits sales or changes margins.
  • Competition affects products or pricing, or infrastructure software customers do not accept products or encounter compatibility issues.
  • Cybersecurity incidents, acquisition-integration difficulties, debt-service demands, or tax uncertainty affect results or cash flows.

Use scenarios to test whether a valuation depends on uninterrupted AI growth, stable margins, and ongoing cash conversion. The goal is not to invent probabilities; it is to identify which assumptions matter most and whether a less favorable outcome would change the investment case.

Use a repeatable AVGO review checklist

  • Update the latest filing and earnings release, and record the dates for every market and financial figure.
  • Review semiconductor and infrastructure software revenue and growth separately.
  • Separate realized AI sales from management guidance and assess customer and supply concentration.
  • Compare GAAP income, adjusted measures, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, stock compensation, and diluted shares.
  • Refresh debt, cash, maturities, interest expense, dividends, buybacks, and share count from the same reporting period.
  • Calculate valuation measures with stated definitions, then compare them with relevant history and peers.
  • Write down the downside assumptions that would invalidate the growth and valuation case.
