How to Evaluate Bitcoin ETFs: Fees, Liquidity, and Tracking

Compare Bitcoin exchange-traded products by disclosed fees, trading costs, NAV deviations and benchmark tracking. Learn what the figures show—and what they do not.

To evaluate a Bitcoin ETF, compare its disclosed ongoing fee, the costs and conditions of trading its shares, its premium or discount to net asset value (NAV), and how its NAV returns track a clearly identified bitcoin benchmark over matching periods. No one figure tells you which product is best. Many U.S. products marketed as Bitcoin ETFs are legally exchange-traded products, not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940, so check the prospectus as well as the headline metrics.

How do I compare Bitcoin ETF fees?

Start with the fee measure the issuer actually discloses: it may be called a sponsor fee, management fee, or expense ratio. Compare like with like, check the current prospectus for waivers and their expiry, and do not mistake the stated fund fee for your total cost. Brokerage charges, bid-ask spreads, market impact, and other expenses may also apply.

For a dated example, iShares lists a 0.25% sponsor fee for IBIT on its product page, accessed October 4, 2026. In a comparison using data through February 28, 2026, Grayscale reported expense ratios of 0.15% for BTC and 0.25% for IBIT—a 0.10 percentage-point difference, calculated from those figures. Grayscale cautions that brokerage fees and other expenses may apply. Its comparison is issuer-produced, not an independent market-wide ranking, and the figures should not be treated as current terms without checking each product’s latest disclosures.

A lower ongoing fee can matter more over a longer holding period because it is an ongoing drag on returns. But the difference in disclosed fees alone does not establish which product will cost less for your holding and trades.

How liquid is a Bitcoin ETF?

Liquidity is about how readily you can buy or sell shares at a reasonable price—not simply how many shares traded. Consider three related measures together:

  • Bid-ask spread: the gap between the highest displayed bid and lowest displayed ask. A narrower spread can reduce the immediate cost of a trade, but it can widen with volatility and does not guarantee your order will fill at the displayed price.
  • Average daily dollar volume: the notional value traded over a stated period. It helps compare trading activity across products with different share prices, but high volume alone does not ensure a narrow spread or low market impact for a particular order.
  • Premium or discount to NAV: the difference between the exchange price and the value of the trust’s assets per share. A persistent or wide deviation can affect the price at which you trade.

Use the same observation window and, where available, compare spread statistics with the size and timing of the trade you expect to make. A 30-day median spread is a historical summary, not a promise about the next order.

The scale of time-sensitive figures is clear in two different snapshots. iShares reported IBIT net assets of $67,589,503,046 and a 30-day median bid-ask spread of 0.02% as of October 2, 2026, on its product page. Separately, Grayscale reproduced Bloomberg data for the 30 trading days through February 28, 2026: BTC averaged 5,666,453 shares and $183,541,001 in daily volume, while IBIT averaged 77,335,236 shares and $3,256,813,517. Those issuer-reported historical figures describe different dates from the iShares snapshot and do not predict execution quality today.

Can a Bitcoin ETF trade below its net asset value?

Yes. NAV is the per-share value of the trust’s underlying assets under its valuation method; the exchange price is also affected by supply and demand for the shares. A share can therefore trade above NAV (at a premium) or below it (at a discount). In its annual filing for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, iShares states that IBIT shares may trade “at, above or below their NAV.” The filing also describes risks relating to custody, trading and NAV deviations: iShares Bitcoin Trust filings on SEC EDGAR.

When comparing products, look at average deviations and their range over a consistent period rather than relying on a single observation. A share price close to NAV on one day does not prove that the product has low long-term tracking error against bitcoin.

What does Bitcoin ETF tracking error mean?

Tracking asks how closely a product’s returns follow its stated benchmark over a chosen period. Before comparing results, identify the benchmark and align the dates, valuation times, and return measure. Also distinguish returns based on NAV from returns based on exchange-traded share prices: the latter incorporate premiums, discounts, and trading frictions as well as the underlying asset’s movement.

Fees and other trust expenses can cause NAV performance to differ from a benchmark, while different index methodologies or pricing windows can make two products’ reported tracking figures non-comparable. Grayscale’s comparison through February 28, 2026 identifies CoinDesk XBX for BTC and CME CF BRRNY for IBIT and describes their respective pricing methods. Because that comparison is published by an issuer with a commercial interest, treat any claims it makes about relative tracking or pricing as issuer claims, not independent findings. The comparison itself also says there is no certainty that an active trading market for shares will develop or be maintained.

For a useful comparison, find each product’s stated benchmark and methodology, then compare NAV total returns against that benchmark over the same periods and with the same fee treatment. Do not infer long-term benchmark tracking quality from trading volume, a single day’s premium or discount, or a comparison that uses different benchmarks.

Why do trading hours and legal structure matter?

Bitcoin trades around the clock; U.S. exchange-listed shares trade during exchange sessions. The iShares annual filing warns that bitcoin-market developments outside Nasdaq trading hours may not be reflected in IBIT’s share price until Nasdaq reopens. A reopening gap, wider spread, or larger premium or discount may follow. If timing matters, consider when the shares can trade and the risk of holding a position through a market closure; a continuously trading underlying asset does not make its U.S.-listed product continuously tradable.

Also check what you are buying. IBIT and BTC are exchange-traded products but are not registered investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and do not have the same protections as registered mutual funds or ETFs. Review the applicable prospectus and filings for the product’s assets, custodian, creation and redemption arrangements, and risks. Grayscale’s September 15, 2025 communication about BTC is available through Grayscale filings on SEC EDGAR; confirm current terms in the latest prospectus.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Confirm the product and disclosures. Identify the exchange-traded product, its legal structure, and the latest prospectus or annual filing.
  2. Compare the same fee measure. Record the sponsor fee or expense ratio, any waiver and expiry, and other disclosed expenses. Check the terms’ effective date.
  3. Assess trading costs in a matching window. Compare bid-ask spreads and average daily dollar volume for the same period; treat them as historical observations, not a forecast of your fill.
  4. Check market-price deviations. Compare premiums and discounts to NAV over the same window, including typical levels and extremes where available.
  5. Test benchmark tracking fairly. Match the named index, pricing methodology, dates, valuation times, and NAV-return treatment before drawing a conclusion.
  6. Account for trading hours. Remember that exchange-traded shares do not follow bitcoin’s 24-hour market schedule.

For the figures cited here, the time distinction matters: iShares’ product-page data cited above are dated through October 2, 2026, while Grayscale’s BTC/IBIT comparison reports trading data through February 28, 2026. Refresh volatile figures and current prospectus terms before making a decision.
