Points per game measures scoring volume, not a player’s full impact. A stronger evaluation combines scoring efficiency with offensive responsibility, playmaking with turnovers, defensive and rebounding context, and lineup-level impact estimates. Compare players using the same season and season type, and treat every composite rating as an estimate—not a final verdict.
Start with scoring volume, efficiency, and role
Points per game tells you how much a player scores on average, but not how many opportunities it took or what offensive burden the player carried. Put it beside minutes, field-goal attempts, three-point volume, and free-throw involvement. Games played and minutes also matter: a per-game average and a season total answer different questions.

For shooting efficiency, effective field-goal percentage (eFG%) adjusts field-goal percentage to account for made three-pointers being worth more than made two-pointers. NBA.com defines it as ((FGM + (0.5 * 3PM)) / FGA). True shooting percentage is another useful efficiency measure because it incorporates field goals, three-pointers, and free throws. The NBA’s Stat Glossary explains its statistical definitions, while the Players Advanced interface provides advanced and usage categories.

A player who finishes chances created by teammates may have a high efficiency rate on limited attempts; a primary scorer may take more difficult shots while carrying a larger share of the offense. Read the rate together with shot volume and role rather than treating either as a complete measure of value.

Evaluate creation alongside its possession cost
Assists are useful, but they capture only passes that directly lead to made baskets. They do not record every action that creates an advantage. Consider assists alongside turnovers and, where appropriate, assist-to-turnover ratio or turnover rate. These help distinguish productive creation from possession cost, though they still do not describe every decision or action.
NBA tracking categories add context beyond the ordinary box score. The NBA Stats FAQ and glossary describe tracking information such as passes and secondary assists. Screen assists—screens that directly lead to a teammate’s made field goal—can also reveal useful off-ball work. These measures broaden the picture, but no single category captures all playmaking.

Put defense and rebounding in role context
Steals and blocks count visible defensive events, not every useful defensive possession. Pair those totals with role-relevant evidence from NBA opponent, defensive-dashboard, or tracking data where available, such as opponent shooting or drives. Interpret the figures in context: the type of assignment and opportunity a player receives affect what the raw count can show.
Rebound totals also depend on opportunity and playing time. NBA.com defines rebounding percentage as the share of available rebounds a player secures while on the floor. Offensive and defensive rebounding percentages can therefore add context to raw board totals when players have different minutes or roles. The NBA glossary defines these categories and screen assists.

Use lineup impact as another lens, not proof of cause
On-court results and impact estimates can help connect an individual’s statistics to team performance, but they should not be read in isolation as proof that one player caused a result. Teammates, opponents, and game circumstances affect what happens during a lineup’s minutes.
The 2016 arXiv preprint Estimating an NBA player’s impact on his team’s chances of winning explains one reason context matters: approaches based on scoring differential or box-score production can treat high- and low-leverage situations alike. It proposes a Bayesian linear-regression approach within a win-probability framework that controls for the other players on court. That is one model-based approach, not a universal rating or a substitute for examining its assumptions.

NBA.com’s estimated advanced-statistics page says, “The advanced stats on this page are derived from estimated possessions.” That qualification matters: estimated-possession statistics are useful tools, but they are not direct counts of every possession. Treat these estimates as one evidence layer, alongside observable performance and role.

Make player comparisons like-for-like
Before comparing two stars, align the scope and denominator. NBA.com’s advanced-statistics interface offers filters for season, season type, per-mode, date range, and game situations. Keep the selected settings consistent and check games and minutes before comparing totals.

Use the same season and regular-season or playoff scope for both players. When pace or playing time differs, per-possession or percentage rates can make a comparison more informative than raw totals. NBA.com defines pace as possessions per 48 minutes and notes that its estimated advanced statistics use estimated possessions; see its glossary and Players Estimated Advanced Stats.
Read ratings as evidence, not a verdict
There is no single statistic that settles a star’s total value. NBA.com exposes several families of advanced and tracking measures, each describing a different slice of performance. For any rating or leaderboard position, ask what it measures, which season and timeframe it covers, and what assumptions shape the estimate. A sound evaluation is the pattern across scoring, creation, defense, rebounding, workload, and lineup context—not one number on its own.
