An AI interview copilot can help hiring teams structure questions, capture interview evidence, and assess answers against job-related criteria. Early research suggests AI interview information can improve selection in some settings, but one study or a vendor’s own results cannot establish that every tool leads to better hires. The practical test is whether a tool produces reviewable, job-relevant evidence and whether the employer validates its results in its own process.
What an AI interview copilot does
“Interview copilot” describes a range of employer-side tools, not one standard product. Depending on the system, it may help prepare questions, transcribe a conversation, suggest follow-ups, organize evidence, score answers against a rubric, or match candidates to roles. Those functions are distinct: a tool that drafts questions does not necessarily evaluate candidates, and a transcription feature does not by itself validate a hiring decision.

Question design and interview support
Some systems generate role-specific questions from defined criteria or suggest follow-ups during an interview. CoPilot Interview’s Interviewer Mode product page describes question generation, live transcription, rubric-style evaluation, evidence notes, follow-up suggestions, and an end-of-session report with scores and flags. The vendor says the interviewer controls the pace and remains the decision-maker; these are product-page descriptions, not independent performance findings. See CoPilot Interview’s Interviewer Mode description.
iCIMS describes a recruiting assistant that can create interview questions from criteria, alongside other recruiting-content features. Its page says recruiters receive recommendations but retain final say. That illustrates how interview assistance may sit within a broader recruiting suite; it does not show that the features improve selection validity. See iCIMS’s AI product information.

Transcription, assessment, and candidate matching
Amazon describes three separate uses in its hiring process: an interactive AI assistant for coding assessments, AI-powered interview recording and transcription, and machine-learning recommendations to match candidates to roles. It says transcription is intended to let interviewers focus more on conversation and less on note-taking. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its own approach, not a definition of what all interview copilots do. Read Amazon’s account of AI in its hiring process.
Does AI interview information improve hiring?
There is promising but limited evidence that adding AI interview information can improve downstream selection in a particular setting. A 2025 working paper by Ada Aka, Emil Palikot, Ali Ansari, and Nima Yazdani reports two field experiments at a recruitment platform. In a live pipeline involving 37,000 applicants for a junior-developer position, 54% of candidates advancing through the AI-assisted pipeline passed the final human interview, compared with 34% in the traditional pipeline. Across the experiments, the authors report final-human-interview pass rates 17.5 to 20 percentage points higher for candidates shortlisted using AI interview information than for candidates shortlisted from resumes alone. The authors also report that five months later, 23% of applicants in the AI group had found new employment, compared with 18% in the traditional group—a reported 5.9 percentage-point difference. They found the AI system tended to select younger applicants with less experience and fewer advanced credentials. These results concern specific implementations, a particular platform, and one named role; they do not establish universal effectiveness or fairness, or show how another employer’s tool will perform.

Vendor-reported figures offer examples of what companies say happened in their own processes, but they are not independent evaluations. Amazon reports that 83% of candidates said interactions with interviewers were more engaging after its transcription tool rollout. It also reports that candidates identified through its job-matching technology who reached interviews were 24% more likely to receive a positive outcome after the initial interview loop than candidates evaluated without it. The account does not provide the underlying sample sizes or methods for these figures, so they should not be read as causal proof. Amazon’s account describes these results.

How to evaluate an interview copilot
Judge the system by the quality and accountability of the hiring process it supports, not by the presence of AI or an impressive feature list. Before using one, ask:
- What part of the workflow does it support? Confirm whether the tool generates questions, transcribes, suggests follow-ups, scores answers, matches candidates, or reports results. Do not assume one capability implies another.
- Are criteria tied to the job? Questions and scoring dimensions should reflect defined role requirements and elicit comparable evidence from candidates.
- Can reviewers inspect the evidence? Prefer scores linked to answer excerpts or concrete observations, with a way for reviewers to correct the record and understand how a recommendation was reached.
- Who makes the decision? Establish who reviews suggestions and scores, how disagreements are handled, and who is accountable for the final hiring decision.
- What are candidates told? For recording or transcription, clarify notice, consent, what is captured, how it will be used, and how long it will be retained. Practices vary by employer: Amazon says its candidates must explicitly consent to recording and are informed about recording, use, and retention in its process.
- Has the employer validated it locally? Measure whether the tool improves outcomes that matter in the organization’s own hiring process, and check for unintended differences between groups. Results from another employer or platform are not a substitute.
What an employer should take away
An interview copilot is best treated as decision support: it may help interviewers ask more structured questions and preserve evidence, but its output still needs human review. The strongest case for adoption is a tool whose criteria fit the role, whose assessments can be checked against evidence, and whose effects the employer measures in its own context. The available field-study findings justify careful evaluation, not a blanket claim that AI interviews produce better hires.
