Before paying, check its privacy controls, internet and account requirements, update support, service lifespan, compatibility, accessories, and total cost—and compare it with a phone or device you already own. Vendor feature lists describe what a product is supposed to do; they are not independent proof of performance.
1. Define the job, then verify the feature
Write down what you want the gadget to do and how often you expect to use it. “Help me capture and summarize spoken notes” is easier to evaluate than “make my life easier.” Check the product’s current documentation for that exact task. Distinguish features available now from experimental functions, future promises, and features that depend on linked services or accounts.

For example, Rabbit’s r1 user guide describes voice-based answers, camera-based visual search and surroundings recognition, translation, audio recording and summaries, alarms, reminders, and over-the-air software updates. Rabbit’s feature support page also describes third-party music services and identifies some agent functions as experimental. Rabbit says internet access is required for AI functions. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent test results.

For any device, look for conditions attached to the feature: internet access, a subscription, a compatible app, a linked account, a particular language, or a supported country. If the product page does not make a requirement clear, treat it as an unanswered purchase question—not as proof the feature works without it.

2. Find out what the device needs to function
A gadget may look standalone while relying on a company account, phone app, cloud service, or third-party platform for its main functions. Before checkout, establish what is needed for initial setup and ordinary use, and what remains available if connectivity or the service is unavailable.
- Connectivity: Does it need Wi-Fi, cellular service, or internet access for the feature you want?
- Accounts and apps: Is an account required for activation? Must you use a companion phone or link other services?
- Region and language: Are the device and its cloud features available where you live and in a language you use?
- Box contents: Check whether required chargers, cables, mounts, or other accessories are included.
Rabbit’s r1 setup guide says activation uses an internet connection and a Rabbit account, and that a USB-C charging cable and power adapter are not included. Those details apply to the r1 setup described by Rabbit; check the current package contents and charging requirements for any product you consider.

3. Check privacy in practical terms
For a gadget with a microphone or camera, do not stop at a general privacy-policy summary. Find out when sensors are active, what visibly or audibly signals recording, and what controls let you stop listening or capture. The FTC advises buyers of voice assistants to review privacy policies and recording practices and to check for physical controls that stop listening in its voice-assistant privacy guidance.
Ask the manufacturer questions such as: What information does the device collect, and how will it be used? Where are pictures and recordings stored? How are they shared, who can access them, and can you delete them? The FTC raises these issues for connected toys in its smart-toy advice; the questions are useful by analogy for other connected gadgets with cameras, microphones, or cloud-linked accounts.

- Look for a physical mute switch or other control that clearly disables listening or recording.
- Check whether recordings or images leave the device, how long they are retained, and how deletion works.
- Find out whether information is shared with service providers or used to operate additional features.
- Disable features you do not need. The FTC also recommends keeping device firmware and apps updated in its connected-device security guidance.
4. Establish how long the device and its services will be supported
Look for a published minimum period for security updates and a clear end-of-life policy. The UK consumer IoT security code says manufacturers should state the minimum software-update support period and make it clear to consumers at purchase in its consumer IoT security code. The UK National Cyber Security Centre likewise advises checking manufacturer support status and, if possible, avoiding devices whose support has ended or will end soon in its smart-device guidance.
Security updates are only part of the question. Ask what happens to the gadget’s main functions if the maker closes an online service. Humane’s consumer FAQ said that Ai Pin server access, cloud-based voice interactions, AI responses, .Center access, and customer support would end on February 28, 2025. Humane also said calls, texts, and data use would cease, while limited offline functions such as checking battery level would remain. That is a documented example of one product’s shutdown, not evidence that another manufacturer will follow the same path. See the Humane Ai Pin consumer FAQ.

5. Work out the total cost and compare alternatives
Include more than the purchase price in your decision. Account for any recurring service charges, required data plan, missing accessories, and other costs needed to use the feature you want. If the product’s requirements or fees are not clearly stated, verify them before buying rather than assuming they are included.
Compare candidates using the same questions:

| Cost | What purchase, recurring-service, connectivity, and accessory costs are necessary? |
| Physical usability | Do the battery, controls, size, and carrying burden fit how you will use it? |
| Existing options | Can a phone, app, or device you already own handle the task adequately? |
Use the same standard for a dedicated gadget and an existing phone: whether it does the job well enough for your needs, with acceptable privacy, dependencies, cost, and support. The official materials cited here do not establish which current AI gadget performs best in independent comparative tests.
