Before connecting an account to an AI agent, check that every permission it requests is necessary for the task. Prefer access to selected data and read-only access when reading is enough; treat permissions to send, edit, delete, pay, or administer an account as higher impact. Also confirm how actions are controlled, whose identity the access is tied to, how you can monitor it, and how to revoke it.
Start with the task, not the permission bundle
Write down what you want the agent to do, which account data it needs, and whether it must take action or only prepare a recommendation. Then assess each requested permission against that specific task. A convenient “connect account” button can conceal several distinct rights, so avoid treating the grant as all-or-nothing.

Check what it can access and do
Review the requested data and actions separately. Ask what messages, files, calendars, or other resources the agent can reach; whether it can create, edit, send, delete, share, or change settings; and whether its access is limited to selected items or extends across the account.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Prefer the narrowest useful scope. If the task concerns one folder or selected files, account-wide access may be more than it needs.
- Prefer read-only access when reading is enough. OWASP gives read-only OAuth access to an email service as an example of removing unnecessary permissions in its excessive-agency guidance.
- Separate recommendations from execution. If the agent only needs to draft a reply, ask whether it can prepare the draft without permission to send it.
Put extra safeguards around consequential actions
Permissions to write, delete, make payments, change account recovery details, alter roles, or administer a system can have effects beyond the immediate task. Ask whether these rights can be withheld until needed, and whether a consequential action requires your approval or additional authentication.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
OWASP recommends explicit authorization for sensitive operations, step-up authentication for critical operations, human oversight for high-risk actions, and separating decisions from execution for irreversible operations. An approval is most useful when it is tied to the specific action being proposed, rather than serving as a blanket permission for later activity. See the OWASP guidance on excessive agency.
Check whose authority the connection uses
Treat an account connection as delegated authority, not just a login convenience. Avoid giving an agent your personal password or a broad credential that can be reused elsewhere. Check whether access is attributable to you and to the agent or system acting on your behalf, and whether the credential is limited to the required resources and actions.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
NIST warns that “Sharing credentials – between humans or agents – creates accountability gaps that can result in any number of security, privacy, and legal issues.” It recommends unique agent identifiers, credentials, and entitlements bound to the identity of the user or system operating the agent. Modern authorization protocols do not, by themselves, guarantee that a grant is appropriately narrow. Read NIST’s discussion of identity for agentic AI; it is guidance, not a certification or endorsement of a product.

Email, documents, and websites can contain malicious or misleading instructions. If an agent can read that content and also use tools to act on your account, consider whether untrusted material could influence it to do something outside your intended task. OWASP identifies prompt injection and tool abuse as risks, and recommends validating external input, limiting available tools and permissions, and using human oversight for high-risk actions. Compare agents on the same task
If you are choosing between agents, compare their access for one clearly defined task rather than comparing permission labels in isolation.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Scope | Which data types and resources can it access? Is access read-only or does it include writing, sending, deleting, sharing, or settings changes? Is it limited to selected resources or account-wide? |
| Identity and credentials | Can you tell which user and agent the grant belongs to? Are credentials narrowly scoped rather than shared or broadly reusable? |
| Action controls | Which actions require approval or additional authentication? Can the agent recommend an irreversible action without executing it? |
| Visibility | Can you inspect the actions taken, the grant, and relevant logs, and see which connection authorized activity? |
| Revocation and lifecycle | Can you remove access, and is it reviewed when the task ends or the access is no longer needed? |
| Data handling | What does the agent’s current documentation say about token storage, data retention, and use of account data? |
General security guidance cannot establish how a particular agent stores tokens or handles account data. Check the named agent’s current documentation as well as the account provider’s authorization controls before granting access.

Review access and know how to revoke it
Before connecting, locate the provider’s active-app or connected-app controls and check whether they show current grants and activity. Learn how to remove the grant, and review it later rather than treating connection setup as a one-time decision. OWASP’s AI security guidance recommends reviewing and revoking agent credentials and execution accounts over time.
Revocation steps and the details visible in access logs vary by service. Use the current instructions from the account provider and the agent; there is no single procedure that applies to every connection.

Is it safe to connect email to an AI agent?
A permission label alone is not enough to determine whether a particular connection is safe. For an email task, check which messages or folders the agent can read, whether it can send or delete messages, and whether it can access the whole mailbox. If it only needs to find or summarize information, look for a read-only scope and avoid granting send or delete rights unless the task truly requires them. Then review the agent’s current data-handling documentation and the provider’s controls for monitoring and revocation.
