Before a conference, set a shared test and vendor questions. During demos, capture what is demonstrated versus merely claimed. Afterward, verify the evidence under comparable conditions.
What an AI visibility tool should measure
“AI visibility” is not one standardized outcome. A tool may count whether a brand appears in an answer, whether an answer cites a particular domain, or both. Neither measure is the same as conventional search ranking, and neither by itself establishes clicks, referrals, or business impact.

- Mention: The brand is named in answer text.
- Citation: The AI answer identifies a page or domain as a source.
- Search ranking: A page’s placement in conventional search results. A high search placement near an AI answer is not automatically a citation.
- Traffic: Visits or referrals measured through appropriate analytics, not inferred from a visibility score.
Ask vendors to define each metric and show an example. Filtrs’ published methodology separates cited, named, and not-present outcomes and excludes ordinary search placement from citation counts: Filtrs methodology.

Why a single answer is not enough
AI answers can vary by prompt wording, run, engine, model, location, settings, and date. A single observation proves only that an answer occurred under those conditions; it does not establish a stable visibility level. A paper examining uncertainty in AI visibility argues that one-shot metrics can imply more precision than the observations justify and recommends uncertainty estimates: paper on uncertainty in AI visibility.

There is no independently established market-wide benchmark for the correct number of samples, a universal accuracy score, or a best tool. Treat sampling figures and confidence intervals as a product’s declared method, not a category standard.
Set the evaluation before the conference
Define the decision and the audience
Write down what the purchase should help your team decide: brand mention frequency, source citation frequency, competitor share of voice, source discovery, content gaps, or a combination. Specify the buyer segments, countries, languages, and AI surfaces that matter. Do not assume a vendor’s “AI coverage” includes every model, interface, or market; coverage and availability may depend on configuration. UnderAI recommends checking the target market and intended use: UnderAI’s AI visibility tool comparison.
Build a stable prompt set
Start with real buyer questions, not prompts chosen because they are likely to produce a favorable answer. Include brand-led, category or comparison, and problem-led intents. Adapt examples such as “Is [brand] any good?”, “best [thing] for [use case]”, and “how do I fix [problem]” to your audience; they are useful patterns, not universal queries. TechRadar discusses prompt selection and platform prioritization in its June 30, 2026 guide: TechRadar’s guide to tracking a brand in AI search.

Keep the exact wording available to every vendor. Ask whether prompts are editable, whether a panel can be frozen for trend comparisons, how changed wording affects historical comparisons, and how many observations are collected for each prompt and platform.

Write the vendor questions in advance
- Which engines, models, interfaces, countries, and languages are covered for our intended market?
- How are prompts selected, edited, frozen, and versioned?
- How many repeated observations are collected per prompt and platform, and over what period?
- Can we see the denominator and date range behind each rate?
- How are failed collections, model changes, settings changes, and sparse prompt groups handled?
- Can we inspect complete answers, citation URLs, timestamps, market, engine/model, and any retrieved material?
- Are exports or an API available, and what are the applicable limits or terms?
- What setup, team access, brand/project, prompt, answer, engine, and reporting limits apply? Which features require an add-on?
- What are the contract terms and total cost for the use case we described?
Check the conference agenda, expected audience, vendor fit, cost, and likely return against the decision you defined; reserve time for follow-up. Event-planning guidance recommends assessing program and audience fit before committing: Cvent’s conference planning checklist.
What to inspect in a demo
Ask each vendor to walk through the same representative task: one of your prompts, the resulting answer, a citation, the denominator and date range behind a metric, and a competitor comparison. Record which details are visible in the product and which were supplied only in the sales conversation.
- Open a result and check whether the full prompt and answer are visible, along with timestamp, market, platform, and model or settings information.
- Check whether the cited URL is accessible and whether the tool distinguishes cited pages from uncited retrieved pages.
- Ask what happens when there is no citation, a collection fails, wording changes, or an engine or model changes.
- Look for a method to compare repeated observations and communicate uncertainty, rather than relying on a single score.
- Ask whether answer snapshots, exports, and API access are included in the offered plan—not merely mentioned in general product materials.
Require counts as well as percentages. “Cited in 9 of 12 observations during this period” is more interpretable than a percentage with no denominator or dates. Filtrs says its method excludes failed collections from denominators and starts a new series after material configuration changes; that is a vendor’s stated approach, not independent validation.
How to compare vendors after the conference
Use one comparison matrix
Put every candidate against the same requirements and label each item documented, demonstrated, unavailable, or still unverified. Keep those statuses distinct: a feature claim in marketing material is not proof that the feature is included in the plan you were offered, and a demo is not proof of accuracy or completeness.

| Evaluation area | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Engines, models or interfaces, markets, languages, and configuration limits | Coverage must fit your audience; a broad label does not establish availability everywhere. |
| Prompt panel | Exact prompts, selection method, edit controls, versioning, and trend handling | Changing the question set can make apparent movement hard to interpret. |
| Sampling and reporting | Observations per prompt/platform, date range, denominator, failed-run treatment, and uncertainty method | Rates without their sample counts and collection conditions are difficult to assess. |
| Metric definitions | Rules for mentions, citations, absence, ranking, and any search-grounding distinction | Different definitions can make two scores incomparable. |
| Evidence access | Full answers, citation URLs, timestamps, model/settings details, retrieved material, exports, and API terms | Underlying records let you check what an aggregate represents. |
| Workflow and cost | Setup, team access, brands/projects, limits, add-ons, contract terms, and total cost | A useful capability may not be included in the proposed tier or fit the team’s workflow. |
Feature comparison guides can help form an initial shortlist, but listed features and prices do not establish collection success, data accuracy, or completeness. UnderAI makes that distinction in its comparison guide. Verify current commercial terms and product capabilities directly because they can change.
Run a comparable trial where possible
- Use the same buyer prompts, platform set, market, and metric definitions across candidates.
- Keep the collection window as close as practical and record any differences in model, settings, or configuration.
- Collect repeated observations rather than deciding from one answer or screenshot.
- Inspect underlying answers and citations, and distinguish named from cited results.
- Mark unresolved gaps and ask vendors specific follow-up questions before choosing.
Do not force unlike measurements into a direct score comparison. If one product counts mentions while another counts domain citations, or their sampling conditions differ, report the difference rather than treating the numbers as equivalent.

Published methodologies illustrate why the details behind a dashboard matter. Visibility Tool says it samples prompts seven times weekly, retains raw answers and timestamps, and reports 95% confidence intervals using Wilson intervals for single rates and cluster bootstrap intervals for aggregates. Its methodology page, accessed October 4, 2026, describes fixed country/language settings and ChatGPT-only tracking. These are the vendor’s declared design choices, not an independent endorsement or universal standard: Visibility Tool methodology.

Filtrs’ undated methodology page, accessed October 4, 2026, describes four fixed collection slots per week, multiple samples per question per run, engine-specific reporting, frozen prompt-panel versions, and explicit denominators. It also notes a rule change and restatements. Its definitions and reporting are useful to inspect, but remain vendor-declared rather than an independent audit: Filtrs methodology.

These examples do not identify a winner. They show what to look for: disclosed sampling, answer-level evidence, clear metric rules, and a record of changes that could affect comparisons.
Close the loop after the event
Debrief against the objectives you set before attending. Follow up on specific unanswered questions about implementation, limits, pricing, and claims that were not demonstrated. Track lead follow-up and conversion separately from general conference activity; event guidance recommends structured follow-up and evaluation: Cvent’s conference follow-up guidance.
If you choose a tool, establish a baseline and a recurring review cadence. Preserve prompt versions and configuration changes, and interpret movement over a stated period rather than treating each answer as a trend. Filtrs’ published methodology puts the distinction succinctly: “A favorable screenshot proves an answer existed once. Frequency tells you whether it repeats.”
