Evaluate each cloud ERP AI feature as a separate workflow decision—not as a single system-wide switch. Before enabling one, confirm what it does, what data and permissions it uses, what it can change, who will review its output, and how you will test and disable it if it fails.
Start with the job, not the AI label
“AI in ERP” can mean different things: drafting or summarizing information, searching records, predicting an outcome, recommending a next step, or carrying out an action. Those capabilities have different failure modes. Assess a named feature in a named business process rather than treating a vendor’s AI offering as one unit.

Describe the workflow and the consequence of error
Write down who will use the feature, what input they provide, what information it may draw on, and what output or action they expect. Record how the current process works and who remains accountable for the outcome. Then consider what happens if the output is wrong, incomplete, outdated, or unsupported by the available records.

A summary checked by a trained employee is not the same risk as an automated change to supplier data or a financial transaction. For an initial pilot, favor work where errors are easy to detect and reverse.

Verify the exact product, edition, and setup
Availability and configuration can depend on the ERP product, edition, release, region, user role, entitlement, tenant settings, and connected services. Confirm requirements in the actual environment and verify licensing with the vendor; public setup documentation does not establish what a particular customer’s contract includes.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 finance and operations
Microsoft’s finance and operations Copilot enablement guidance, updated in August 2026, says Power Platform Integration is required for Copilot features. Some functions also require specific Dynamics 365 apps installed in Dataverse; administrators may need to install those apps in government cloud environments. The Copilot sidecar can depend on Bing Search, and calls may cross regions when a service is unavailable in-region. Microsoft documents setup steps by feature, so confirm the prerequisites for the specific capability rather than assuming one configuration enables them all.
SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition
SAP’s documentation for natural-language search says users activate it by selecting “Enable AI Natural Language Search” in their profile. Additional entitlement and authorization may be required. In SAP’s example, users can inspect AI-generated search-filter conditions, a practical detail to verify in the release and tenant being considered.
Rank #2
SAP Master Data Governance
SAP’s “Enabling Automated Tasks” guidance describes AI-assisted changes and summaries for SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. It specifies a SAP BTP Generative AI Hub service instance and required access, and says additional entitlement and authorization may be needed. These instructions are for the cited Private Edition scenario; do not apply them to another SAP edition without checking its own documentation.
Oracle Fusion Applications
Oracle’s AI documentation covers ERP and other Fusion application families and cautions that some content may not apply to every Fusion product. A separate Oracle Cloud EDM enablement page says its control is available only with EPM Enterprise subscriptions and is not displayed where generative AI is unavailable in the home region. That is a Cloud EDM example, not a general enablement procedure for Fusion ERP.
Map data access and movement
Trace the feature’s data path from the user interface through the ERP, any connectors and retrieval sources, the model service, and the destination of its output. Confirm which user permissions apply and whether the feature can access documents, attachments, external search, or other connected sources. Test with both a representative user and a restricted role to check that the feature does not expose information beyond the user’s intended access.
Microsoft’s published Copilot privacy FAQ says Copilot uses data based on the current user’s access. It also says customer data is not used to train or improve Microsoft AI models unless a tenant administrator opts in to sharing. The FAQ notes that some Bing-powered and third-party plug-in scenarios might send data outside the Microsoft Cloud trust boundary. Separately, Microsoft’s finance and operations setup guidance documents possible cross-region calls and region-dependent availability. These are Microsoft’s descriptions, not a guarantee for every feature or deployment; check the specific service, current agreements, and tenant configuration.

Before rollout, document who is allowed to use the feature, what uses or inputs are prohibited, which outputs need review, how exceptions are escalated, and who can disable the capability. Decide what evidence an approver needs before relying on an output. For consequential financial, supplier, inventory, or master-data actions, retain human approval until the control owners have validated the workflow and its audit records.
Oracle’s SaaS Cloud Applications AI Assessment states: “Each AI feature can be enabled or disabled through product configuration.” This is Oracle’s description of its Fusion AI configuration, not an independent assessment of a customer’s controls. The assessment also says that under Oracle’s Fusion Applications 26A terms, customers using approved customer-managed models remain responsible for governance, oversight, validation, compliance, and lifecycle management. Do not infer that customer-managed models are available for every ERP feature or customer environment.
Inspectability is useful but limited. SAP’s S/4HANA search example lets users view AI-generated filters through an explain control so they can inspect and refine the search. That does not establish that every output has a complete explanation of how it was produced.
Run a bounded pilot with a stop rule
Set the test cases, participant roles, control owner, acceptance threshold, and stop conditions before activation. Use representative, appropriately permissioned data. Include routine work as well as edge cases such as stale or incomplete records, ambiguous instructions, and restricted access. Compare results with the existing process; do not assume an AI feature is an improvement simply because it produces an answer.
Track outcomes that matter to the task
- Task completion and elapsed time, including the time spent reviewing outputs.
- Factual or transactional correctness, with errors classified by severity.
- Unsupported answers, corrections made by users, and escalation frequency.
- Whether permissions and data boundaries behaved as intended.
- Whether users understood uncertainty and could override or reject an output.
- Support burden, exceptions, and the practical ease of disabling the feature.
Microsoft says it uses automated testing and manual and automated evaluation tools to assess Copilot response quality after release. That vendor description is not an independent ERP benchmark and does not set an appropriate acceptance threshold or establish expected return on investment for another vendor or a customer’s workflow. Define a threshold that reflects the task’s risk and current-process baseline; no universal cross-vendor threshold is established by the official materials cited here.

Compare only features that do the same job
A comparison is useful only when the candidates address the same business task. For those candidates, assess workflow fit; whether the output is a draft, search result, prediction, recommendation, or action; the impact of an error; source-data coverage; evidence inspectability; permission behavior; geography and language support; data movement and external dependencies; entitlement and setup; review requirements; auditability; and reversibility.
The vendor documentation cited here describes different feature types and configuration paths, not a controlled head-to-head performance test. For example, SAP’s inspectable search filters are a concrete search feature, not evidence that SAP, Microsoft, and Oracle products are interchangeable.
Record an explicit enablement decision
For the tested feature, choose and record one outcome: enable for a limited group, defer until a named fix or approval is complete, or do not enable it for this workflow. Keep the exact feature and version, environment, test results, data-flow assumptions, approvals, owners, and review date with the decision. Reassess if the ERP release, model, connected services, region, or data classification changes.
