These layers see requests at different points and are not interchangeable. Compare a candidate’s placement, rules, login controls, logs, and tuning workflow before deciding whether it fits your site.
Start with where the firewall runs
WordPress Developer Resources distinguishes firewalls that run at the WordPress level, web-server firewalls, and third-party reverse proxies. Its Hardening WordPress handbook says plugin firewalls try to filter attacks while WordPress is loading, before it has fully processed the request. A web-server WAF filters before content is processed; a reverse proxy filters requests before they reach the hosting server.

The handbook names ModSecurity as an open-source WAF and describes third-party reverse proxies as an architecture option; these are examples, not evidence that one approach or product is more effective. An edge service only filters traffic that passes through it. Review whether the origin remains directly reachable rather than assuming the proxy alone closes that route.
Compare capabilities against your site’s needs
Rules and update cadence
Cloudflare documents managed rulesets, custom rules, rate limiting, and a feature matrix for Free, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans in its WAF documentation. Availability varies by plan, so check the current matrix for the account and features you would use. A feature’s presence in documentation does not mean it is enabled or appropriately configured for your site.

The WordPress.org listing describes Wordfence as an endpoint firewall with malware scanning, login security, and threat-intelligence feeds. The listing says Premium receives real-time rule and signature updates, while free-version updates are delayed by 30 days. Treat these as listing claims, and confirm the current details on the plugin page.
WordPress-aware controls and login abuse
Cloudflare’s WordPress and CMS guidance discusses managed rules, conditions scoped to /wp-admin/, and rate limiting for login brute-force attempts. These are configuration possibilities, not settings that should be assumed to be active or suitable by default. Check which paths and request conditions your rules actually cover, and test changes before relying on them.

WordPress also documents brute-force defenses separately from firewall architecture. Its brute-force guidance is useful context when evaluating login protections: ask what a control limits, how it responds to repeated attempts, and whether you can see and investigate the resulting events.
Logs, rule order, and exceptions
Do not judge an edge WAF by the number of rule types alone. Cloudflare documents ordered security-feature phases: when a rule takes a terminating action, later phases do not evaluate that request. Its feature-interoperability documentation also covers exceptions and interactions. In a review, check whether you can see which rule acted, understand the order of evaluation, and create a narrowly scoped exception when a legitimate request is blocked.

Use a practical review checklist
- Map the traffic path. Identify whether the candidate acts at the WordPress endpoint, web server, or edge, and determine whether requests can bypass an edge layer by reaching the origin directly.
- Confirm the controls you need. Look for documented managed or custom rules, targeted rate limits, and WordPress-relevant conditions. Verify plan availability and what requires configuration.
- Check update terms. Establish how rule or threat-intelligence updates are delivered for the exact product version or plan you are considering.
- Inspect operational visibility. Find out how to review events, identify the rule and action involved, and trace rule-order interactions.
- Evaluate tuning and recovery. Confirm how to test a change, scope an exception, and restore normal access if a legitimate request is blocked.
- Place the firewall in the wider security plan. WordPress guidance treats hardening and brute-force protection as broader security concerns, not as work a firewall makes unnecessary. Keep updates, backups, access control, and incident response in the plan.
What a firewall review can—and cannot—establish
Official documentation can establish where an approach operates and which features a vendor or project documents. It does not, by itself, establish which product blocks the most attacks, has the lowest performance impact, or is best for a particular site. WordPress.org describes its Security Team as working on core security and coordinating with hosting operators and security ecosystem providers, including WAF mitigations; that describes ecosystem coordination, not endorsement of a specific firewall. Accordingly, treat product feature descriptions as inputs to a fit assessment, not as independent efficacy or performance results. A serious decision depends on the site’s traffic path, required controls, available plan features, and ability to monitor and tune rules.
