Evaluate a robot’s reliability by measuring whether it completes the entire task repeatedly under clearly stated conditions—not by pointing to one successful run or a single headline percentage. A useful evaluation also records where progress breaks down, the time or actions required, performance under controlled changes, and whether the robot can detect and recover from faults. For safety-relevant work, count a run as successful only when it completes the task without violating defined safety constraints.
Define what counts as completing the task
Before testing, describe the task as observable state transitions and define a final-state success predicate. For example, a multi-step tabletop task might require the robot to pick up an object, move it to a specified location, and release it there. State what counts as a valid placement, what conditions make a run fail, and how ambiguous outcomes are adjudicated.
Make the evaluation reproducible by documenting the robot platform and sensing setup, controller or policy version, task setup, initial-state distribution, trial conditions, stopping rules, and scoring method. Where possible, publish scoring code; otherwise, provide enough detail for another team to apply the same checks.
- Specify required transitions and the final-state predicate.
- Record initial conditions and any variation in object pose or environment.
- State time and action budgets, exclusions, retry rules, and stopping criteria.
- Explain any human judgment or intervention, including how unclear outcomes are handled.
Measure repeatable end-to-end completion
Run multiple trials for each task and condition. Report the number of successful trials over the total number, such as “7 of 10,” rather than only a rounded percentage. A lone successful rollout shows that completion was possible once; it does not establish how consistently the robot can do it.

Keep per-task results visible alongside any aggregate. An overall average can conceal a robot that succeeds on easy tasks but repeatedly fails on one difficult task. If you report an aggregate, explain how it is calculated and whether tasks or trials receive equal weight.
Use a scorecard, not one opaque number
Task completion is the central outcome, but it does not explain how a robot reached that outcome or how dependable it is outside a clean, nominal run. Report each relevant axis separately and define its measurement.
| Axis | What to report | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| End-to-end completion | Trials satisfying the predefined final-state predicate, as numerator and denominator | Whether the complete task was achieved |
| Step-level progress | Completion by subtask or state transition, plus the first failed step | Where progress breaks down and how much of the task was completed |
| Planning and action quality | Plan correctness, action completion, or deviation from the intended sequence | Whether failure arose from selecting a poor sequence, executing an action, or both |
| Efficiency | Elapsed time, action count, or planning effort under a stated budget | The cost of successful execution |
| Robustness and generalization | Results across controlled perturbations or held-out conditions | Sensitivity to changes beyond the nominal setup |
| Recovery | Whether a fault was detected and whether the robot restored a usable task state | Resilience after execution departs from plan |
| Safety | Completion subject to explicit safety constraints, where relevant | Whether success was achieved without an unacceptable safety violation |
Intermediate measures matter because two runs with the same final outcome can differ substantially: one robot may stop early, while another completes nearly every transition before a late failure. Logging the first failure point and transition-level results makes that difference visible.

Separate efficiency from success
A robot that eventually completes a task after many retries is not equivalent to one that completes it promptly and consistently. Choose an efficiency measure that fits the application—elapsed time, action count, or planning effort—and report it beside completion, not in place of it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDefine the measurement boundaries: when timing starts and ends, whether planning time is included, what counts as an action, and how retries or human intervention are treated. State the applicable time or action budget. A score without those definitions is difficult to interpret across systems.
Test robustness beyond the nominal setup
Run nominal and perturbed conditions separately. Use controlled changes that matter in the intended environment, such as object position or environmental state, and report what changed. This reveals whether performance depends on a narrow initial setup, while keeping the source of any difference interpretable.

Do not blend perturbed and nominal trials into one figure without explaining the mix. Report results by condition so readers can see which changes the robot handles and which cause degradation.
Evaluate failure recognition and recovery
Reliable execution includes what happens when an action goes wrong. Test plausible faults or observed deviations and score at least three stages: whether the robot recognizes that execution diverged from expectation, whether it adapts, and whether it restores a usable state from which the task can continue or safely stop.
Recommended Free Tools
Record recovery attempts, retries, and human interventions separately from clean execution. A recovered run may count as task completion under a stated rule, but it should not be indistinguishable from a run completed without recovery.

Recovery is receiving dedicated attention in benchmark design. The 2026 LIBERO-RECOVER preprint describes more than 1,000 failure-recovery scenarios across four recovery levels. Its project page reports six evaluated models, ten trials per task under slight object-position perturbations, and a time budget of 1.1 times human completion time. These are design details for that benchmark, not universal evaluation requirements. Read the LIBERO-RECOVER preprint and see the project page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make safety part of the success predicate
For safety-relevant applications, define success as task completion plus compliance with explicit safety conditions. A run that reaches the requested final state while violating a safety constraint should not count as a reliable success. Specify the conditions before testing and report safety outcomes clearly.
The Stanford AI Index 2026 describes safe success in its robotics benchmark as completion together with satisfaction of safety conditions. That framing reinforces an important evaluation choice: safety is part of the outcome definition, not merely a separate note after the success rate. Interpret published benchmarks cautiously
Long-horizon robotics studies use different tasks, horizons, simulators, platforms, reward functions, and protocols. A scoping review published in Discover Robotics in 2026 groups reported measures into task completion, optimization and learning, efficiency, and robustness or generalization, and cautions that this variation limits direct comparison and pooled performance claims. Read the scoping review.
For a fair system comparison, align task definitions, platform and sensing setup, initial-state distribution, trial count, perturbations, time and action budgets, and success predicates. If those conditions cannot be aligned, compare results within each benchmark or describe the differences instead of ranking raw percentages.
Published examples also show why benchmark figures need their context. Jain, Sachdeva, and Paul’s 2025 CoRL paper evaluates 25 simulated Franka Kitchen tasks, six real-world tabletop tasks, and 18 simulated tasks in its Franka Long Horizon Tasks corpus. It addresses how action errors can compound over long horizons by modeling subgoal transitions. Read the 2025 paper.
Ha, Florence, and Song’s 2023 CoRL paper reports a benchmark of 18 tasks across five domains and an average absolute success-rate improvement of 33.2% for its distilled policy across those domains. That number is a result for the paper’s approach and benchmark, not a general expected gain from distillation or a directly comparable reliability score for other task suites. Read the 2023 paper.

RoboCerebra, a 2025 preprint, proposes measures for task success, planning accuracy, planning efficiency, and action completion accuracy; its described state transitions are checked with simulator predicates. These categories can help structure an evaluation, but a benchmark’s metrics and simulator checks still need to be interpreted in light of its particular setup. Read the RoboCerebra preprint.
