Before buying a designer handbag, verify that the exact model and era match the listing, assess the seller and transaction protections, check authenticity clues as a group, inspect condition, and compare the price with similar bags. No single code, receipt, card, or photograph proves authenticity. For a costly purchase that still raises questions, use a seller or platform with clear recourse or seek professional verification.
Start with the exact bag you want
Write down the brand, model, size, material, color, hardware finish, and approximate production period before comparing listings. These details give you a meaningful reference point: compare a bag with examples of the same model and era, not just other bags from the same designer. British Vogue’s vintage-buying guide recommends researching the source and brand-specific identifiers; its expert advice is durable, but it dates to 2020, so use current sources for marketplace terms.

If you are undecided among several candidates, note which dimensions matter most to your use: capacity, weight, strap length, material care, and whether you need particular compartments. A bag that is authentic and well-priced can still be the wrong choice if its size or condition does not suit how you intend to carry it.

Check the seller’s history and the listing’s consistency
Review seller feedback and history, then compare the description with the photos. The stated model, materials, color, included accessories, and condition should match what the images show. Be cautious if details are vague, photos avoid important areas, or the seller will not answer reasonable questions. Request clear, current close-ups of identifying marks, logos, seams, hardware, corners, handles, and any worn or repaired areas.

Keep payment and recourse in view
Use the marketplace’s integrated payment process rather than paying outside it. Before checkout, read the current return, dispute, and verification terms for the specific platform and location; protections and deadlines differ and can change. UK government guidance says Vinted buyers have 48 hours after delivery to raise a concern through its process. That is a Vinted-specific UK example, not a general deadline for resale platforms. Look for a coherent authenticity story
Authentication is brand- and era-specific. Check whether the claimed production period fits the identifier type and details shown, then assess several features together: branding, construction, stitching, materials, hardware engraving and finish, and the model’s configuration. A code that looks plausible is not enough to authenticate a bag. Conversely, a missing or no-longer-visible identifier is not, by itself, proof that a bag is counterfeit; identifiers and practices vary between brands and across time, and some newer products use chip-based identification.

Receipts, authenticity cards, boxes, and dust bags can accompany counterfeit items. Treat them as supporting context, not proof. The useful question is whether the bag, its identifiers, the claimed era, and the seller’s account all fit together. If two details contradict each other, pause and ask for clarification rather than explaining away the inconsistency. Photos help screen a listing, but they cannot always show material quality or construction well enough for high confidence. British Vogue’s 2020 interviews with vintage experts likewise emphasize evaluating the source and brand-specific details. If uncertainty remains on a high-value purchase, consider an appropriate professional verification service or a seller/platform with a clearly explained verification process. No single checklist or external result should be treated as infallible.

Inspect condition beyond the front and sides
Ask for additional photos where wear is hidden or unclear, and inspect the bag’s:
- Shape and structure: Check for sagging, distortion, or loss of shape that may affect use.
- Corners and edges: Look for scuffing, worn coating, or exposed material.
- Handles and straps: Check for darkening, cracking, stretching, and wear where straps attach.
- Hardware: Assess finish, scratches, tarnish, and whether closures and other moving parts function.
- Lining and interior: Look through pockets and seams for stains, damage, or wear not visible from outside.
- Odor, repairs, and disclosed damage: Ask about issues photos cannot establish and whether repairs have been made.
Separate cosmetic wear you are willing to accept from damage that affects function or could require costly or difficult repairs. Compare price and overall value
Compare asking prices for the same model in similar condition. Brand alone is too broad a comparison: size, material, era, wear, repairs, missing accessories, and transaction costs can all change what a listing represents. A price far below comparable examples is a reason to investigate the seller and evidence more closely, not proof on its own that the bag is fake. Likewise, packaging can contribute to completeness but does not establish authenticity.

Use a side-by-side decision check
When comparing multiple listings, judge each against the same questions rather than letting a low price or attractive photo dominate:
- Authenticity evidence: Do the model, era, identifiers, construction, and seller account make sense together? Is there a credible verification route if needed?
- Condition and fit: Does wear affect appearance or function, and does the size and material work for your intended use?
- Price and completeness: Is the asking price comparable with the same model in similar condition? Are missing pieces, fees, or repairs reflected in the total?
- Transaction recourse: Are payment, returns, disputes, and deadlines clear before you commit?
Inspect promptly after delivery
Open and inspect the bag as soon as it arrives. Photograph its condition and any discrepancy from the listing, preserve the packaging and transaction records, and use the platform’s stated process within its deadline. If you believe the item is materially misdescribed, raise the issue before attempting repairs or making changes that could complicate a dispute.
Why the checks matter
In a 2026 UK Intellectual Property Office announcement, one in four second-hand clothing buyers said they had unknowingly bought a counterfeit online in the preceding year, and one in three said they did not check authenticity before buying. Nearly 60% of people with counterfeit-buying experiences reported negative outcomes; the announcement also says 14% were put off second-hand shopping altogether.
