Before sending money to a crypto presale, verify who is selling the token, what rights it gives you, how its contract works, how supply and unlocks are structured, and whether you can actually exit. A polished website, “utility” label, audit badge, or promised exchange listing proves none of those things by itself. Treat the checks below as ways to expose uncertainty—not as a guarantee that a project is safe.
How do I check a crypto presale before investing?
Start by writing down the offer’s key facts from its primary documents, then check whether those facts agree across the sale page, white paper, terms, roadmap, and deployed contract. Do not rely on a social post or a graphic when the underlying terms or on-chain record can be checked.

- Identify the seller. Record the legal or operating entity, responsible people, and jurisdictions the project says it serves. Check names and corporate registrations where relevant; a registration alone does not validate an investment.
- Specify the token and sale. Note the token name, blockchain, sale dates, sale-contract address, accepted assets, token price or pricing formula, total supply, and how and when tokens will be delivered or claimed.
- Write down the rights and restrictions. Find out what the token lets holders do, if anything, and whether there are transfer limits, lockups, claim delays, refund rights, or resale restrictions.
- Trace the money. Record the stated use of proceeds and identify who controls the receiving wallet or sale contract. Check whether the terms explain what happens if the project changes, fails to deliver, or ends the sale.
- Compare primary sources. Match the details against the project’s terms, white paper, roadmap, and contract. Resolve discrepancies from reliable primary evidence before considering payment.
Investor.gov advises prospective buyers to investigate the people and firms involved, understand the business plan and token rights, and ask about refunds and resale limitations. Those are useful questions even when the offering is outside the United States.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow can I tell whether a token presale is legitimate?
There is no single check that establishes legitimacy. Verify identity and claims independently, and distinguish what exists now from what the team says it will build later.

Check the people, entity, and relationships
Look for consistent identities, verifiable prior work, and a clear accountable issuer. Confirm claimed partnerships, endorsements, and exchange relationships through the partner’s own channels rather than relying on the presale’s announcement. Anonymous or inconsistent claims do not prove fraud, but they make accountability harder to establish.
Separate a working product from a promise
Ask what the token does today, which functions remain on a roadmap, who must deliver them, and what holders can do if delivery does not happen. A demo, prototype, or published code is evidence of a particular thing—not proof that the business will succeed or that token holders have enforceable rights.
Consider the project’s explanation of why the token is needed and how the stated proceeds support its plan. Be cautious when the pitch depends on future managerial work by the issuer or team while describing profits or appreciation as an expected outcome. The legal significance of those representations depends on the offer’s facts and circumstances.
Look for claims that cannot be independently checked
Treat guaranteed returns, countdown pressure, unverifiable endorsements, copied websites, inconsistent team biographies, requests for seed phrases, unexplained wallet permissions, and pressure to recruit others as reasons to stop and investigate. Never disclose a wallet seed phrase to a presale operator. Before signing, verify the exact transaction recipient and what the wallet prompt authorizes.

What should I check in a presale smart contract?
First establish that you are examining the actual contract used by the sale, not a similarly named token or an address copied from an unverified post. Then check what the code and its administrators are able to do.
Match the address and code
- Find the sale and token contract addresses through at least two official project channels.
- Compare those addresses with the transaction details and the relevant blockchain explorer. Do not sign if the recipient differs from the one you verified.
- Check whether the explorer displays verified source code. If it does not, the deployed contract’s behavior is harder for outsiders to inspect.
- Compare any audit report with the exact contract address and code version in use. Read its scope, findings, unresolved issues, and stated remediation rather than relying on an “audited” logo.
Review administrator powers and trading restrictions
Determine whether an owner, administrator, or upgrade authority can mint more tokens, pause transfers, freeze or blacklist addresses, change fees, restrict selling, upgrade the contract, or withdraw assets. Check who holds those permissions and whether the project describes limits or safeguards. A technically audited contract can still leave holders exposed to powerful controls, economic risks, or governance decisions.
SEC Chair Jay Clayton posed a useful question in a 2017 statement on cryptocurrencies and ICOs: “Has the code been published, and has there been an independent cybersecurity audit?” Publication and an independent audit are worth checking, but neither establishes that the issuer is honest or that future contract changes will be safe.
Understand what automated screens cannot tell you
Smart-contract screening tools can flag certain patterns, but a clean result is not a safety certification. A 2024 study by CRPWarner authors evaluated 13,484 real Ethereum token contracts and reported detecting malicious functions in 4,168 of them. That figure describes the study’s dataset and method; it is not an estimate of the share of presales that are scams. A survey of rug-pull research identified 34 causes and found that the datasets it reviewed documented 2,448 instances while covering only a subset of those causes. These findings illustrate both varied mechanisms and incomplete coverage, not current market-wide incidence.

How do I assess tokenomics, valuation, and unlocks?
Reconstruct the numbers from the terms and token allocation documents rather than relying on a tokenomics graphic. Label assumptions: advertised sale prices, supply figures, and vesting plans may change or may not be independently verified.
Calculate the implied fully diluted valuation
Multiply the stated token price by the stated fully diluted supply. For example, if a project states a price of $0.10 and a fully diluted supply of 1 billion tokens, the implied fully diluted valuation is $100 million. This is arithmetic based on those stated inputs, not a prediction of market value or evidence that the tokens can be sold at that price.
Map allocations and release dates
Record the announced shares or token counts for the public sale, team and founders, investors, treasury, liquidity, and incentives. For each allocation, note the cliff, vesting schedule, unlock dates, and whether the schedule is enforced by a verifiable contract or merely described in project materials. Pay particular attention to large unlocks around a token claim or planned listing.
Where possible, examine on-chain holder concentration. Distinguish project and team wallets, liquidity pools, bridges, and burn addresses carefully; wallet balances alone may not reveal who ultimately controls tokens. SEC task-force material identifies distribution schedules, lock-ups, and vesting among relevant offering details. It does not set a universal acceptable team allocation or lock duration.

Can I sell a presale token or get a refund?
Read the sale terms and token transfer rules to determine whether you can transfer or sell, when tokens can be claimed, and whether a refund is available. Investor.gov specifically recommends asking whether tokens can be returned for a refund or resold and what limitations apply.
A planned exchange listing is not a completed listing, and a listing does not by itself establish a liquid market. If the project says it will lock liquidity, check whether liquidity already exists, who controls it, how long the lock lasts, how the lock is implemented, and whether you can verify those details independently. A statement or graphic is not proof of an on-chain lock.

Do not assume the answer from a token’s name or a project’s “utility” label. The SEC’s 2026 small-business guidance describes an investment-contract analysis involving an investment of money, a common enterprise, an expectation of profits, and essential managerial efforts by others. The actual offer, promises, rights, and circumstances matter; the analysis is not resolved by what a project calls its token.

How should I compare two presales?
Compare the evidence behind each project rather than assigning a casual score or ranking based on marketing. A score is meaningful only if its method is transparent and validated.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Evidence quality | Can the claims be checked against primary documents, independent records, or on-chain data? |
| Product and delivery | What functionality exists now, what is promised, and who must deliver it? |
| Issuer and accountability | Are the responsible people and entity identifiable, consistent, and independently verifiable? |
| Token rights | What rights does the token actually provide, and what refund, transfer, claim, or resale restrictions apply? |
| Contract and controls | Does the deployed address match the sale, is its code verified, what did an audit cover, and what powers remain with administrators? |
| Supply and valuation | Are supply and valuation assumptions clear, and can allocations, vesting, and unlock dates be checked? |
| Liquidity and exit | Is liquidity present or only planned, who controls it, and can holders transfer or sell under the stated terms? |
| Legal exposure | Which jurisdictions are relevant, and what do current official sources say about the offer’s circumstances? |
SEC task-force material also identifies protocol architecture, security model, distribution schedule, and regulatory risk as useful disclosure cross-checks. They help organize questions; they are not a substitute for verifying the project’s specific claims.
When should I walk away from a presale?
Walking away is rational when essential facts cannot be verified or when the sale mechanics remain unclear. Do not send funds while waiting for a team to resolve a discrepancy that affects who receives your payment, what you receive, or whether you can exit.
