To evaluate a center’s offensive development, compare his rates, responsibilities, and decisions with his own earlier seasons, then use centers in similar roles as context. Points per game alone can mislead: minutes, pace, touches, and team usage all affect scoring totals. Combine statistics with film to determine whether a change reflects better skill, a larger opportunity, a new role, or some mixture of the three.
Build a fair comparison before judging progress
Start with the player’s earlier seasons, not a league-wide ranking. Then find role-similar centers to help interpret what the numbers mean. Compare games and minutes played, team context, teammates, and the center’s offensive job. A change in role can alter both the kinds of shots a player takes and how often he gets the ball.

Use per-possession measures alongside totals to account for differences in pace and opportunity. The Jr. NBA explains that per-possession stats help remove the advantage a faster team gets from having more possessions to generate per-game numbers (Jr. NBA’s guide to traditional and advanced stats). Rates reduce some distortions; they do not make two seasons comparable if the player’s role or responsibilities changed.
Organize the comparison around four questions:
- Scoring efficiency and shot profile: Is he converting more effectively, getting to the line, or taking different shots?
- Workload and role: Is he handling more possessions, touches, or post opportunities?
- Creation and decision-making: Is he creating advantages for teammates without giving the ball away more often?
- Play-type value and off-ball offense: Is he contributing as a roller, screener, cutter, handoff partner, putback finisher, or spot-up threat?
Choose statistics that answer the right question
No single number captures a center’s offense. Pick measures that fit the question, and read each in combination with the others. NBA.com’s glossary defines many of these measures, including true shooting percentage, effective field-goal percentage, assist percentage, turnover percentage, post touches, points per possession, potential assists, and screen assists (NBA Stats glossary).

| Question | Useful measures | What they help show |
|---|---|---|
| Is his scoring more efficient? | True shooting percentage (TS%), effective field-goal percentage (eFG%), field-goal percentage by area or action, and free-throw generation | How efficiently he scores, with different measures accounting for different parts of the scoring picture. |
| Has his offensive workload changed? | Usage, touches, post touches, and paint touches | How often he is involved and where he receives the ball. |
| Is he creating for teammates? | Assists or assist percentage, potential assists, turnovers, and turnover rate | Whether his passing produces opportunities, and what it costs in lost possessions. |
| Where is his value coming from? | Points per possession by play type, screen assists, and action frequency | Whether his contribution comes through rolls, post-ups, handoffs, cuts, putbacks, or spot-ups. |
Separate efficiency from shot-making context
Raw field-goal percentage does not account for the extra value of made three-pointers or the contribution of free throws. Effective field-goal percentage adjusts for the extra value of threes; true shooting percentage incorporates field goals and free throws. They answer related but different questions, so do not treat either as a complete grade of a player’s offense.
Expected field-goal percentage can add shot-difficulty context. NBA.com’s glossary, dated October 20, 2025, defines it as the field-goal percentage an average NBA player would be expected to shoot given the tracking details of each attempt (NBA.com’s expected field-goal percentage definition). Comparing actual results with expected results can help frame shot-making, but it does not tell you whether the center made the right decision, improved his role, or created a useful screen.
Read workload together with outcomes
Usage is not an overall quality score. A center asked to finish more possessions may score more and turn the ball over more simply because his workload has increased. Pair workload with efficiency and playmaking, then inspect what happened on the possessions themselves.

The NBA describes four factors for evaluating offense at the team level: eFG%, turnover ratio, offensive rebound percentage, and free-throw attempt rate. Its turnover ratio is expressed per 100 possessions used (NBA’s explanation of offensive factors). These concepts can help structure questions about an individual center, but the team-level framework alone does not grade him.

Evaluate the center’s actual offensive job
Pick-and-roll roll man
Check roll-man frequency, points per possession, finishing efficiency, and whether the center forces a defensive decision. On film, look for screen timing and angle, whether he rolls or pops in response to coverage, catch quality, finishes through contact, and quick passes when a help defender commits. A useful roll can create an advantage even if a teammate misses the shot.
NBA Stats lists “Pick & Roll Roll Man” as a distinct play type, making it possible to compare production within that role (NBA Stats roll-man play-type data).

Post-ups
Compare post-touch volume with points per post touch and post-touch field-goal percentage. More post touches may indicate a changed team role rather than improved post skill. Film can show whether the center establishes position, selects a move efficiently, recognizes help, and passes before the defense closes. NBA.com defines post touches, post-touch points, and post-touch field-goal percentage in its glossary (NBA Stats glossary).

Off-ball offense
Look beyond possessions that end in a shot by the center. Cuts, putbacks, handoffs, spot-ups, and screens can create value without a large scoring workload. Screen assists count screens that directly lead to a teammate’s made field goal; NBA Stats also provides play-type categories for handoffs, cuts, putbacks, and spot-ups (NBA Stats play-type data; NBA Stats glossary).

Use film to test what the numbers suggest
- Set the question first. Identify the center’s main offensive role and choose the relevant statistics before watching clips.
- Sample different games and outcomes. Include makes and misses. Separate the player’s action from the result: a well-timed screen and correct roll can create a good opportunity even if the guard misses, while one made contested shot does not establish a repeatable skill gain.
- Tag each possession. Record the action—roll, pop, post, handoff, cut, putback, or spot-up—the defensive coverage, the center’s decision, and the outcome.
- Connect observations to a measure. Compare roll-man points per possession with catches and finishes; compare assist or potential-assist changes with short-roll reads; and check screen assists against screens that lead directly to teammate baskets.
- Compare like with like. Review the same player across seasons, asking whether the change holds in similar roles and against comparable coverages. Describe what you observed without claiming a small set of clips proves what caused it.
Check sample size and display limits
Record games and minutes played, the number of possessions in each play type, and any changes in role or teammates. A rate based on a small number of opportunities can move sharply, so it deserves less confidence than a pattern that appears across a larger, comparable sample.
NBA Stats’ play-type display requires at least 10 minutes per game and 10 possessions in a play type for eligibility (NBA Stats roll-man play-type page). That is a display qualification rule, not proof that the sample is statistically conclusive.
