A starter’s absence is a reason to investigate a backup tight end, not an automatic reason to start him. Before putting him in your lineup, confirm the starter is out, check whether the backup is likely to run routes and receive targets, and compare that role with your league’s scoring and your other options.
First, confirm the starter’s status and the backup’s assignment
Check the latest injury designation and reports close to kickoff. Then check whether the team has another tight end who could share the work. An inactive starter does not guarantee a one-for-one replacement: the backup might remain in a blocking role, or multiple players may divide the receiving opportunities.

Snap share shows how often a player is on the field; it does not show what he is doing there. For a potential receiving replacement, routes and route participation are more informative when available. Then ask whether those routes are producing targets.

- Routes: Is the tight end running routes on passing plays, or mainly blocking?
- Targets: Is the quarterback actually looking his way?
- Targets per route run: Does he earn targets at a meaningful rate when he runs a route?
- Target share and red-zone use: Is there evidence of involvement in the team’s passing opportunities, including near the goal line?
- Recent usage: Do the numbers show a pattern across games, especially when the starter was absent or limited, rather than a single outlier?
PFF’s usage coverage includes snaps, routes, targets per route run, red-zone usage, alignment, situational splits, and fantasy points as ways to identify changes in a player’s role: PFF’s usage report. It does not establish a universal route-share threshold or a general success rate for backup tight ends.
Separate a repeatable role from a touchdown-led result
A touchdown can make a player’s fantasy score look promising even when his receiving involvement is thin. In NFL.com’s 2026 Week 2 analysis, Kenyon Sadiq scored 11.4 fantasy points with a short touchdown run, but had only three targets on 12 receiving routes. The article advised waiting for more reliable receiving production. Those are observations from one player and week, not a general projection rule: NFL.com’s tight-end analysis.

Ask whether the tight end has a plausible path to points through catches and receiving yards, or whether the lineup case depends mostly on scoring a touchdown. A small sample cannot establish a dependable floor, and touchdown-dependent production is more fragile than steady involvement.

Two other examples from NFL.com’s 2026 Week 2 article show why role evidence matters more than the label “backup.” Matt Okada called Michael Mayer an excellent start if Brock Bowers was inactive again, pointing to Mayer’s 23 routes and team-leading seven targets in Week 1. That recommendation was conditional on Bowers’ status and specific to Mayer’s situation; it does not mean 23 routes or seven targets is a universal start threshold.

By contrast, Kyle Pitts ran 21 routes but received one target in the cited Week 1 example, in a poor quarterback situation. Routes alone did not assure useful production in that instance. Neither case proves a broad causal rule, but together they illustrate why you should check both route involvement and whether those routes are turning into targets.
Adjust for the passing environment and matchup
After establishing that the backup may have a receiving role, consider the quarterback, the team’s likely passing volume, and the opponent. These factors can strengthen or weaken a case, but they should not replace evidence about the player’s actual assignment and involvement. A favorable-looking matchup cannot make a blocking role into a receiving role, and a high route count does not guarantee targets.

Compare him with your actual lineup alternatives
The relevant question is not whether the backup is interesting in isolation; it is whether he is a better choice than the tight ends or flex options available to you. Use your league’s scoring rules and lineup settings, and account for whether you need a one-week fill-in or are making a longer-term roster decision.

- How likely is an expanded role, and will another teammate share it?
- How many snaps and routes does the player get?
- How much target volume does he receive, and how often does he earn targets when running routes?
- Is there red-zone involvement, or does the case depend heavily on a touchdown?
- How do the quarterback and likely passing environment affect the opportunity?
- How does the opponent matchup fit the role?
- How does the player compare with your alternatives under your league’s scoring and your short- or longer-term needs?
Projection tools can serve as a same-format cross-check, not proof that the expected role is real. NFL Fantasy describes its Best Available Player tool as comparing projected point differences for a starter or bench player and allowing comparisons for this week, the rest of the season, playoffs, or future weeks.
