To estimate your next electricity bill after a rate change, use your utility’s current rate schedule and the kWh shown for the bill period. Apply the rate that matches your plan, add fixed and other applicable charges, and subtract any credits. If the new rate takes effect partway through the billing period, follow your utility’s rules for splitting or prorating usage; there is no universal method.
Gather the details from your bill and rate notice
Start with the service address’s utility bill and the rate schedule or notice that applies to it. Rates and billing rules can vary by location, tariff, meter, and payment arrangement, so a national average or another household’s rate is not a reliable estimate for your home.

- Billing dates: Record the start and end dates, and the number of billable days.
- Usage: Note total kWh. If your bill provides daily, hourly, or time-band usage, keep that detail for a time-of-use or dynamic tariff.
- Meter reading status: Check whether the bill says the reading is estimated. An estimate based on estimated usage may differ from the eventual bill. The Australian Energy Regulator explains usage and meter-reading details in its energy bill guidance.
- Applicable tariff: Confirm the plan name and effective date, then record the unit rates, tiers or time bands, fixed charges, and any listed adjustments, taxes, delivery charges, credits, or export compensation.
Use the rate schedule for your own utility and service area. The Ofgem bill-calculation guidance and the California Public Utilities Commission’s electric-rates page illustrate why a bill can include charges beyond energy consumed.

Energy charge = kWh × rate per kWh
For example, if your bill shows 500 kWh, use 500 multiplied by the rate in your own tariff. Do not substitute a published average or a rate from a different region or plan.
Tiered tariff
Allocate usage across the tariff’s tiers, then multiply each tier’s kWh by that tier’s rate:
Energy charge = sum of (kWh in each tier × that tier’s rate)

Time-of-use or dynamic tariff
For time-of-use pricing, multiply usage in each time band by its corresponding rate, then add the results:
Energy charge = sum of (kWh in each time band × that band’s rate)
The same monthly kWh total can cost different amounts if more usage falls in higher-priced hours. A dynamic tariff may require interval-specific usage and rates; a monthly total alone may not be enough to reproduce the charge. If your bill does not show the needed breakdown, check your utility account or ask the utility what usage data it can provide. The U.S. Department of Energy’s guide to evaluating utility rate options explains why load shape and the structure of a rate matter when comparing tariffs.

Add fixed charges and other bill lines
Keep charges that do not vary directly with kWh separate from the energy calculation. If the tariff has a daily standing charge, multiply it by the billable days; if it specifies a monthly fixed amount, use the amount and billing treatment in the schedule. Ofgem explains that a standing charge is paid each day even when no energy is used in its bill guidance.

- Various Monitoring Parameters: The power meter plug can monitor the power (W), energy (kWh), volts, amps, hertz, power factor, cost, minimum and maximum power (W), cumulative days and time of your appliances. By switching 7 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The home energy monitor can also calculate and display how much power your appliance uses and how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Upgraded LCD Display: With large screen size 2.36 inch x 1.85 inch, clearer monitor backlit, our electrical usage monitor can display the data clearer and more visible no matter day or night. 180°full wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers
- Adjustable Backlight Time: Our upgraded watt meter has 5 options of backlight time. The default backlight time duration is 10 minutes(bL-0). If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Then account for the other line items that actually apply to your tariff. Depending on the utility, these may include delivery or grid charges, adjustments, taxes, minimum bills, demand charges, credits, or compensation for exported energy. Do not add a charge just because it appears on another utility’s bill.
For a flat-rate plan with a daily fixed charge, the structure is:
Estimated bill = (kWh × unit rate) + (billable days × daily fixed charge) + other applicable charges − credits

Apply a rate change that falls inside the billing period
Check whether the new rate’s effective date falls between the start and end dates on your bill. If it does, use the utility’s stated method for applying old and new rates. Where the schedule assigns separate usage to each rate period, calculate each portion at its applicable rate and add them.
Do not assume that dividing total kWh evenly by the number of days is exact. Household use can change from day to day, and the utility’s meter-reading, allocation, or proration rules control. If the utility has not explained how it handles a mid-cycle change, ask how usage is assigned across the effective date; the available schedule and bill details may not support a precise estimate without that information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand why the bill can change when usage looks similar
Compare the new estimate with the previous bill using matching line items and billing-period lengths. A difference may reflect more than the headline per-kWh rate: check the days billed, usage, tier thresholds, time-band allocation, fixed charges, other tariff charges, credits, and whether either meter reading was estimated. Seasonal heating or cooling can change consumption even when a household’s routine seems similar.

Compare plans using your actual usage
If you are deciding whether to switch tariffs, compare the terms that determine your own bill rather than just the advertised unit rate:
- Fixed or daily charges, alongside each per-kWh price.
- Tier thresholds and rates, or the hours and prices for time bands.
- Effective dates and how a tariff treats billing periods that cross a rate change.
- Eligibility, meter requirements, and payment conditions.
- Your household’s actual usage pattern, especially interval data if considering time-of-use or dynamic pricing.
A plan with lower rates at certain hours may suit a household that can shift flexible use to those hours, but could be less suitable if use is concentrated in peak periods. Compare plans with local tariff details and your own usage; without those inputs, a general recommendation would not establish which plan costs less for your household.
Use published price figures only as context
Published caps or averages are not a substitute for your tariff. For example, Ofgem’s price-cap figure for Great Britain for 1 October through 31 December 2026 is £1,723 per year. It represents an average for electricity and gas together, based on average rates and standing charges for direct-debit customers in England, Scotland, and Wales; it is not an electricity-only figure or a household quote. Ofgem reported that this cap was 4% higher than the preceding period in its price-cap rates and standing-charges tables.
