Use gallons × price drop for the potential price benefit, then subtract fuel burned on a detour and other direct costs. Don’t risk running nearly empty to chase an uncertain price.
Calculate the savings on the gallons you’ll actually buy
Let g be the gallons you plan to purchase and d the price difference per gallon, in dollars. The gross price benefit is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Gross savings = g × d
For example, buying 8 gallons at a price 15 cents per gallon lower would save $1.20 before extra costs: 8 × $0.15 = $1.20. That is an illustration, not a prediction of future prices.
Use the gallons affected by your decision, not the tank’s full capacity by default. A lower price applies only to fuel you buy at that price; waiting does not change what you paid for fuel already in the tank, and a future price drop is never guaranteed.

Include the cost of a detour
If you would drive out of your way to reach a cheaper station, estimate the fuel used on the round trip. Let e be the extra miles, m your realistic miles per gallon for that drive, p the fuel price per gallon, and o any other direct costs such as a toll:
Net savings = (g × d) − ((e ÷ m) × p) − o
If the result is zero or less, the detour does not save money on that fill. In the 8-gallon example, a $1.20 gross benefit disappears if the detour’s fuel and other costs total more than $1.20. Use realistic trip fuel economy, not an optimistic range estimate.

AAA’s Gas Watchers Guide cautions drivers not to waste fuel driving far to save a few cents. A station already on your route is a more useful comparison than a distant pump requiring a special trip.

Separate when to buy from how much to buy
Changing the fill-up date alone does not create a saving if you ultimately buy the same gallons at the same price. If you shift some gallons from a later purchase to an earlier one, calculate the difference only on those shifted gallons—and compare the actual prices paid. A partial fill can leave you flexibility, but it cannot guarantee that prices will fall later.

Compare prices you can actually get
Compare the same fuel grade and check conditions that affect the price you pay, such as a cash-only price or a discount tied to a particular payment method. Nearby prices are useful only if the station is a feasible stop. AAA Club Alliance says its AAA Mobile app shows gas prices at nearby stations. GasBuddy’s price search can look near your location or by city or postal code; its help page also documents a cash-price filter for some U.S. stations. These tools help compare posted prices, but they do not establish that a stop will produce net savings.
Keep a safe fuel reserve
Do not extend a trip or delay a fill until the tank is nearly empty just to wait for a cheaper price. AAA recommends watching the gauge and refilling at about one-quarter tank; AAA East Central also advises keeping at least a quarter tank to allow for unexpected delays.

A miles-to-empty display is an estimate, not a promise. In a 2021 release, AAA reported that 74% of drivers it surveyed used the display when low on gas. In tests of selected vehicles, AAA found an average fuel-economy display error of 2.3%, with individual errors ranging from −6.4% to 2.8%. Those results describe the vehicles and scenarios AAA tested, not every car. AAA said estimates can vary with speed, acceleration, and distance, and recommends following the vehicle manufacturer’s tire-pressure guidance and avoiding hard acceleration to support fuel economy.

- Estimate the price benefit: multiply the gallons you will buy at the lower price by the per-gallon difference.
- Subtract added costs: for a detour, estimate round-trip fuel cost using realistic fuel economy, then subtract tolls or other direct costs.
- Check feasibility and reserve: confirm the price applies to your fuel grade and payment method, and keep enough fuel for safe travel and delays.
There is no reliable forecast in these sources for what a particular local station will charge later. Treat a future price drop as uncertain; base the calculation on prices and travel costs you can verify.
