For example, a 10-minute video averaging 8.384 Mbps is about 628.8 MB (decimal), before small container and metadata overhead. The result is an estimate, not a guaranteed file size.
How do I calculate video file size from bitrate and duration?
Use this formula:
Estimated size in bytes = average bitrate in bits per second × runtime in seconds ÷ 8

To express the result in decimal megabytes (MB), divide the byte total by 1,000,000. To express it in mebibytes (MiB), divide by 1,048,576. State which unit you mean: file managers and encoding tools do not always use or label decimal and binary units consistently.

Convert the units before calculating
- Megabits per second (Mbps) to bits per second: multiply by 1,000,000.
- Minutes to seconds: multiply by 60. Hours to seconds: multiply by 3,600.
- Bits to bytes: divide by 8.
For instance, 8 Mbps is 8,000,000 bits per second, not 8,000,000 bytes per second.

Use combined audio and video bitrate
For the size of the complete audio/video file, use the combined bitrate if it is available. If you only have separate rates, add the audio bitrate to the video bitrate first. A video-only bitrate leaves out the audio data and will underestimate the total.
YouTube’s Data API distinguishes video and audio stream bitrates, combined uploaded-file bitrate in bits per second, duration in milliseconds, and uploaded size in bytes. These are separate properties: a calculated estimate is not a substitute for the actual file-size value.

Worked example: a 10-minute 1080p SDR video
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p SDR video at standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 384 kbps for stereo audio. Using those recommendations as an illustrative input:
Recommended Free Tools
- Add the rates: 8 Mbps + 0.384 Mbps = 8.384 Mbps.
- Convert to bits per second: 8.384 × 1,000,000 = 8,384,000 bits per second.
- Convert runtime to seconds: 10 × 60 = 600 seconds.
- Calculate bytes: 8,384,000 × 600 ÷ 8 = 628,800,000 bytes.
- Convert units: 628.8 MB (decimal), or about 599.8 MiB (binary).
This is an estimate based on YouTube’s recommended upload settings, not a promise that every 10-minute 1080p video will have that size. The guidance presents recommended settings; actual encoded bitrate and uploaded file size can differ.

How YouTube’s recommended upload bitrates affect an estimate
YouTube recommends MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, and variable bitrate for uploads. It says no bitrate limit is required and presents its figures as recommendations, not universal requirements.
| SDR resolution | Standard frame rates | High frame rates |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) | 35–45 Mbps | 53–68 Mbps |
These are video bitrate recommendations for upload preparation. YouTube lists stereo audio at 384 kbps separately, so include that rate when estimating the complete file. The figures do not guarantee a specific upload size or describe every rendition YouTube creates for playback.

Why the calculated size may differ from the actual file
Variable bitrate changes over time
With variable-bitrate encoding, the data rate rises and falls according to the content. Use an average combined bitrate for the whole video, not a peak bitrate, when applying the formula. A peak describes a high point, not the average amount of data per second across the runtime.
Container and metadata add some data
The multiplication estimates media data from bitrate and duration. It does not separately account for container structures or metadata, so treat the answer as approximate. For an exact uploaded size, check the file itself or its recorded upload metadata.

Upload file size is not playback size
The estimate concerns the file being encoded or uploaded. YouTube’s upload recommendations and metadata for the uploaded file do not establish the size of a playback rendition delivered to a viewer.

- Find the encoder’s average video bitrate, or select the applicable YouTube recommendation as a planning assumption.
- Add the audio bitrate if the video rate is listed separately. If the encoder provides an average combined bitrate, use that instead.
- Convert the full runtime to seconds.
- Multiply bitrate by seconds and divide by 8.
- Convert bytes to MB or MiB, and label the unit.
- Compare the estimate with the actual encoded file size when available; use the actual size for storage planning.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the file is for a prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, and the uploaded video streams as made—up to 4K 60fps—at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the bitrate shown in my encoder or YouTube’s recommendation?
Use the encoder’s average combined bitrate when estimating a file that has already been encoded. YouTube’s figures are recommended upload settings and can serve as planning assumptions before encoding.

The estimate is approximate, and MB and MiB use different divisors. Encoding variation and container or metadata overhead can also make the actual file differ.
