In formula form: estimated years to TBW = rated TBW ÷ annual host writes. Measure the same host-write counter twice over a representative interval, annualize the difference, and keep the units consistent (TB with TB, or TiB with TiB).
This is a planning estimate for consuming the manufacturer’s endurance rating, not a promised failure date. Workload pattern, write amplification, warranty limits, SMART interpretation and unrelated component failures all affect the real outcome.

What TBW tells you about an NAS SSD
TBW means terabytes written. It is the amount of data a manufacturer rates an SSD to sustain under a defined test workload. A 600 TBW rating therefore describes an endurance budget of 600 TB written to the drive under the manufacturer’s conditions; it does not mean the drive will fail on the 600th terabyte, nor does it guarantee a particular number of calendar years.
Seagate’s IronWolf 510 SSD Product Manual explains the relationship this way: ‘The TBW of an SSD calculates how many times you can write the user capacity of an SSD per day over the warranty period (or a different number of years), based on the JEDEC workload used to specify the TBW.’ The reference to a JEDEC workload matters. The rating is produced with an agreed test pattern, not with every possible NAS workload.

TBW and DWPD (drive writes per day) express related ideas. DWPD normalizes endurance to drive capacity and a time period; TBW is the total rated amount. For your own estimate, TBW is usually the easiest starting point because you can compare it directly with the host-write total reported by the NAS or SSD.
- TBW is an endurance rating, not a countdown clock.
- The rating is specific to the exact model and capacity.
- The manufacturer’s test workload may differ substantially from your NAS workload.
- TBW does not cover every failure mode, such as controller, firmware, power or environmental faults.
Collect the four inputs before calculating
A defensible estimate needs four pieces of information. Write them down before doing the arithmetic so that a later update uses the same definitions.
1. Exact model and capacity
Record the full model identifier, firmware or revision if the manufacturer distinguishes versions, and usable capacity. Endurance can change between capacities in the same product family. Do not substitute a rating from a similarly named drive.

2. Published TBW and warranty terms
Use the manufacturer’s current specification or warranty document for your region. Samsung Semiconductor’s warranty wording says coverage lasts for the ‘stated time period or the TBW, whichever comes first.’ That means a drive can reach the calendar limit before it reaches its TBW budget, or consume the TBW before the stated years expire.
The named figure ‘1 TB 990 PRO: 600 TBW’ appears in Samsung Semiconductor’s current warranty table accessed in 2026. It is an example for one model and capacity, not a universal value for 1 TB SSDs. Treat every number the same way: preserve the capacity, model, region and document date alongside it.
3. A host-write counter
Find the lifetime host-write total in the NAS health interface, SSD information page or SMART data. Note the counter name and units exactly as displayed. Some tools report decimal terabytes, while others report bytes, gigabytes or tebibytes. A lifetime total by itself is not a write rate; you need two readings separated by a known interval.
4. A representative measurement period
Choose an interval long enough to include normal activity. A period that covers backups, snapshots, media indexing, virtual machines and other regular jobs is more useful than a quiet weekend. Record start and end dates, unusual events and any seasonal workload that could make the result atypical.

Measure host writes correctly
- Capture the first reading. Write down the exact lifetime host-write value, unit, date and drive serial or slot. If the NAS exposes several write counters, identify whether each is host writes, NAND writes or another metric.
- Leave the workload unchanged where practical. Do not intentionally generate writes just to obtain a faster result. If a migration, RAID rebuild or large restore occurs, mark it as an exceptional event.
- Capture the second reading. Use the same NAS screen or SMART attribute and the same unit. Record the date and time.
- Subtract the readings. The difference is the host data written during the interval. If the counter has reset, wrapped, changed units or disappeared after a firmware update, discard that pair and begin a new baseline.
- Repeat per drive in a pool. Caches, metadata, parity, deduplication and tiering can distribute writes unevenly. A pool total can hide one SSD receiving far more writes than its neighbors.
Keep host writes distinct from NAND writes. Seagate defines write amplification factor (WAF) as the ratio between data the SSD writes internally and data written by the host. Garbage collection, wear leveling and metadata can therefore make internal NAND writes higher than the host total. If your monitoring tool reports only NAND writes, label the estimate accordingly instead of presenting it as host-write consumption.
Convert the measurement into an annual rate
Use this expression:
annual host writes = writes during measurement period × periods per year
For a period measured in days, the equivalent is:
annual host writes = interval writes × (365 ÷ interval days)
For months, multiply by 12 only when the measured period is representative of a month. Keep the same unit used by the TBW rating. If the rating is decimal TB and your counter is TiB, convert one side before dividing; do not mix the labels and assume they are interchangeable.
Then calculate:
estimated years to rated TBW = published TBW ÷ annual host writes
Show the interval, subtraction, annualization factor and final division in your notes. A reader—or your future self—can then replace one assumption without rebuilding the whole calculation.
Worked examples
Example: steady monthly writes
Suppose a 1 TB SSD is rated for 600 TBW. Two readings taken 30 days apart show 0.20 TB of additional host writes. Annualized writes are 0.20 × 12 = 2.4 TB/year. The endurance-budget estimate is 600 ÷ 2.4 = 250 years.

That striking result does not mean the NAS will operate for 250 years. It says only that this measured write rate would consume the 600 TBW budget very slowly. The warranty’s time limit, electronics aging, firmware issues, power events, temperature and other failure modes will matter first.

Assume the same 600 TBW rating, but the NAS writes 0.40 TB per month during eight ordinary months and 1.20 TB per month during four months containing major backup projects. Annual writes are (0.40 × 8) + (1.20 × 4) = 8.0 TB. The estimate becomes 600 ÷ 8.0 = 75 years.
Using only the quiet-month rate would produce 125 years and understate consumption. When activity varies, calculate a low and high case or use a full year of counter history.
Example: two SSDs in one NAS
Drive A records 0.80 TB per month, while Drive B records 0.20 TB per month. With identical 600 TBW ratings, their annualized rates are 9.6 TB and 2.4 TB. The corresponding budget estimates are 62.5 years and 250 years. The difference is a reason to monitor each device, not to average the pool and assign that average to every SSD.
Why the estimate can differ from the drive’s real workload
Manufacturers establish TBW under specified patterns. Solidigm’s endurance estimator exposes sequential or random access, block size, read percentage, queue depth, duty cycle and custom WAF as inputs. Those variables demonstrate why a calculator result is conditional: changing the pattern or WAF changes the implied endurance consumption even when the host data volume is unchanged.
Host writes versus internal writes
WAF can rise when the SSD performs garbage collection, moves data for wear leveling or handles fragmented updates. A NAS with small random writes, snapshots and databases can therefore stress NAND differently from a large sequential backup stream. Your host-write estimate remains useful, but it should be treated as an approximation of rated-budget consumption unless the manufacturer provides a workload-specific conversion.
Read-heavy does not mean write-free
Reads do not add to the host-write counter, yet a read-oriented NAS may still perform metadata updates, log writes, cache maintenance and snapshot bookkeeping. Conversely, a short burst of random writes can be more demanding than the same volume of sequential writes under a different test profile.

Do not borrow a universal NAS write rate
No universal third-party NAS write-rate statistic or average SSD lifespan was established for this calculation. Your own counter history is more relevant than an internet average because users, applications, RAID layouts, snapshots and backup schedules vary.
Use SMART wear data as a cross-check
SMART telemetry can reveal how the drive itself is interpreting wear. Compare the reported percentage-used, media-wear or remaining-life field with your TBW estimate and note the manufacturer’s definition of that field.
A Seagate manual describes a Percentage Used indicator and recommends replacement at 100 percent. That guidance is specific to the documented behavior of that drive family. Do not assume that every SSD’s percentage reaches 100 percent at the same physical condition, or that a different vendor’s 100 percent value predicts immediate failure.
Look for implausible combinations: a rapidly increasing percentage-used value with a low host-write rate may indicate a counter-unit mistake, a high WAF workload or a drive-specific attribute definition. A flat percentage does not prove that every component is healthy. Treat SMART as a second monitoring signal and keep the raw readings with their dates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand what the warranty does—and does not—promise
Warranty language is usually the practical ceiling on a TBW estimate. Samsung’s published wording—coverage for the stated time period or TBW, whichever comes first—means the endurance budget cannot extend warranty coverage beyond its contractual term. Other manufacturers may define exclusions, regional terms or different thresholds, so read the document for the exact model and capacity.
TBW is not a failure trigger. An SSD can continue operating beyond its rating, or fail before it, because endurance ratings are statistical guarantees under a test workload rather than a precise physical stop. Controller faults, firmware defects, power-loss damage, overheating, connector problems and NAS backplane issues are outside a simple TBW division.

Apply the method to a multi-drive NAS
Map each physical SSD to its NAS slot or serial number, then maintain a small log with:
- model, capacity and firmware;
- published TBW and warranty cutoff;
- host-write readings and dates;
- calculated interval writes and annual rate;
- SMART wear and error indicators;
- temperature, rebuilds, migrations and other exceptional events.
Parity calculations, cache tiers and metadata can make write distribution asymmetric. If the NAS exposes per-device counters, calculate each drive separately. If it exposes only a pool total, state that limitation and avoid claiming that every member receives an equal share.
How to compare a replacement SSD after calculating your rate
Once you know your workload, compare candidate drives on more than TBW. A high TBW number is not useful if the NAS cannot accept the drive’s form factor or interface, or if warranty coverage ends sooner than expected.

Build a monitoring routine around the estimate
- Baseline. Save the model, capacity, TBW source, warranty terms and initial SMART readings.
- Sample consistently. Take readings on a practical recurring schedule, using the same counter and units. Monthly checks are convenient; shorten the interval when the workload changes rapidly.
- Recalculate after major changes. Reassess after adding surveillance recording, virtual machines, snapshots, a new backup schedule, RAID migration or a cache tier.
- Set an operational margin. Do not plan to run exactly to the rated TBW. Choose a replacement point that leaves time to copy data and investigate abnormal wear.
- Respond to health warnings separately. Rising media errors, critical SMART alerts, overheating or repeated link resets warrant investigation even when the TBW estimate looks comfortable.
- Keep tested backups. Verify that restoration works; endurance arithmetic cannot recover data after an unrelated failure.
Interpreting the result
If the calculated years are short, reduce unnecessary write activity where practical: review snapshot retention, move temporary workloads, adjust logging, or separate high-write applications from a cache tier. If the result is very long, do not treat it as a lifetime guarantee. Instead, use the estimate to prioritize monitoring and replacement planning while continuing normal health checks.
Present your result with its assumptions: ‘This 600 TBW SSD saw 8.0 TB of host writes during the measured year, so the rated-budget calculation is 75 years; the figure assumes the workload remains similar, uses host writes rather than NAND writes, and does not override the warranty term or other failure risks.’ That wording tells readers exactly what the number means and what it does not.
