Estimate a 24/7 YouTube stream’s EC2 outbound data from the encoder’s actual output bitrate and runtime: decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds ÷ 8,000. At a constant 1 Mbps, that is about 10.8 GB per day or 324 GB in a 30-day month, before protocol overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, or other instance traffic. That estimates payload volume—not network capacity or your AWS bill.
Calculate monthly data from the stream bitrate
Use the bitrate the encoder actually sends, not a resolution label by itself. For a constant-rate stream, multiply Mbps by the number of seconds streamed and divide by 8,000 to get approximate decimal gigabytes. Decimal GB means 1,000,000,000 bytes; AWS metering and billing definitions may differ.

| Continuous stream rate | Approximate payload per day | Approximate payload per 30-day month |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 10.8 GB | 324 GB |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1,944 GB (1.944 decimal TB) |
| 14 Mbps | 151.2 GB | 4,536 GB |
| 17 Mbps | 183.6 GB | 5,508 GB |
The 14 and 17 Mbps rows are arithmetic examples using YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates for 1080p at 30 fps and 1080p at 60 fps, respectively; recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. They are not universal settings or measured network-use figures. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse your actual output rate
If audio and video bitrates are configured separately, use their combined rate when the encoder reports them separately. With variable bitrate, use an average over a representative period or measured byte totals; multiplying a short peak by every hour of the month can overstate usage. YouTube automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into viewer formats, so your EC2-to-YouTube outbound stream is the ingest feed, not the sum of viewers’ playback renditions.

Adjust for runtime and operating margin
A 30-day month contains 2,592,000 seconds; a 31-day month contains 2,678,400. Use the actual planned runtime if the stream has downtime. You can add a clearly identified margin for transport overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, and unrelated traffic, but that is an operational planning allowance—not an AWS rule. For example, adding 10% to a 1,944 GB payload estimate yields roughly 2,138 GB planned transfer; choose a margin based on your own conditions rather than treating 10% as a universal value.
Separate data volume, network capacity, and cost
Volume: how many bytes leave the instance?
The bitrate calculation estimates outbound stream payload over time. Actual instance traffic can include protocol overhead, reconnects, monitoring or management traffic, and other workloads. This makes the calculation a planning estimate, not an exact byte count or bill.

Capacity: can the instance sustain the stream?
Monthly volume does not tell you whether the instance can hold the required outbound rate continuously. Check the selected instance type’s baseline bandwidth and applicable network-flow limits. AWS documents that some smaller instance types advertise “up to” bandwidth and use network I/O credits to burst above baseline; burst is best effort and its available duration varies by instance size. AWS describes burst bandwidth as typically available for 5 to 60 minutes depending on size, not as a 24/7 guarantee. A continuous stream needs sustained capacity, headroom, and a suitable single-flow limit because the ingest connection is often one flow. Review EC2 instance network bandwidth for the chosen type; nominal “up to” bandwidth alone does not establish suitability.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. If you encode on the EC2 instance, include enough compute capacity for encoding as well as network capacity; an instance that can transmit the rate may still be undersized for the encoder workload.

Cost: what does AWS charge for the measured use?
Apply the current data-transfer-out rate for your region and account terms, then account separately for compute and any other AWS services. Pricing, free-tier eligibility, commitments, and billing definitions can change. AWS’s pricing page captured for US East (Ohio) showed tiered internet outbound pricing and described an eligible 100 GB monthly data-transfer allowance aggregated across AWS services and regions, subject to exclusions. That is a regional, eligibility-dependent example, not a universal promise or a current estimate for every account. Confirm the terms on AWS EC2 data-transfer pricing before budgeting.
Estimate, validate, and refine the figure
- Read the encoder output rate. Record its configured output bitrate in Mbps, including audio if separately configured.
- Set the stream duration. Use actual planned hours or the full month length in seconds; note whether downtime is planned.
- Calculate payload. Multiply Mbps by seconds and divide by 8,000 for decimal GB.
- Add a transparent margin if needed. Identify what it covers—such as overhead, reconnects, bitrate variation, or other instance traffic—and keep it separate from the payload result.
- Check sustained networking. Verify baseline capacity and relevant single-flow and instance-level limits for your selected EC2 type, with headroom for continuous operation.
- Compare estimates with usage after launch. Inspect CloudWatch and billing usage for the same period, and revisit the bitrate or allowance if results diverge.
Which AWS numbers to compare
AWS documents the EC2 CloudWatch NetworkOut metric as outbound traffic from an instance. AWS support notes that it differs from DataTransfer-Out-Bytes, the metric used in Cost Explorer reports. Use NetworkOut to examine instance traffic and billing usage to reconcile charges; summing the instance metric alone does not exactly reproduce an AWS bill. See AWS’s guidance on calculating EC2 network usage.

Instance metrics are aggregated over configured CloudWatch periods. AWS notes that short microbursts can exceed allowances or drop packets without appearing in ordinary instance metrics at the same granularity. Stream settings that affect the estimate
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports RTMP/RTMPS, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Its published H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Follow YouTube’s encoder guidance, then use the encoder’s actual output and measured traffic for the estimate.
