Estimate the cost of your own workload—not just the price per token—before switching Claude models. Add up ordinary input, output, cache writes, cache reads, eligible batch traffic, and any separately billed tools or platform charges. Then test the candidate model on representative tasks: a lower list price does not prove equal quality or guarantee a particular saving.
The prices below are Anthropic’s first-party API list rates in USD, checked October 7, 2026. They are a starting point, not a prediction of your invoice; confirm current rates and model availability before making a decision.

How to estimate Anthropic API costs before switching to a lower-priced Claude model
Build the estimate from a representative period of actual use, such as a month. For each model and request type, record token counts by billing category, price each category at the rate for the route you use, and add applicable feature or platform charges.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesestimated cost = Σ(category token count ÷ 1,000,000 × that category's USD-per-million rate) + separately billed feature/platform charges

Do the calculation separately for routine requests, long-context requests, tool-using requests, and high-output requests. A single average prompt can hide important differences in token mix and feature use.
Which Claude rates should you use?
Anthropic’s pricing page lists these first-party API rates as of October 7, 2026. All figures are USD per million tokens. Rates on Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry, or other routes may differ.
Rank #2
| Model | Input | Output | Five-minute cache write | One-hour cache write | Cache read/hit | Batch input/output |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Sonnet 4.6 | $3 | $15 | $3.75 | $6 | $0.30 | $1.50 / $7.50 |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1 | $5 | $1.25 | $2 | $0.10 | $0.50 / $2.50 |
Batch input and output rates are 50% of standard rates for supported asynchronous batch requests; do not apply that discount to ordinary synchronous calls. See Anthropic’s Claude API pricing for the current rate card and conditions.

Suppose a workload uses 1 million input tokens and 100,000 output tokens, with no caching, batch processing, tool charges, or platform differences. At the rates above, the arithmetic is:
Rank #3
- Sonnet 4.6: $3 + (0.1 × $15) = $4.50.
- Haiku 4.5: $1 + (0.1 × $5) = $1.50.
For this assumed mix, the second estimate is one-third of the first token cost. It is not a universal monthly saving: your input/output mix, cache behavior, tools, platform, and task outcomes may differ.
How to gather token counts for your estimate
- Identify your billing route and exact model ID. Check whether requests go through the direct Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Claude Platform on AWS, or Microsoft Foundry. Use that route’s rate card rather than assuming first-party prices apply.
- Pull a representative usage period. Use the relevant console or API logs to record input, output, cache-creation, and cache-read token volumes, along with request count and tool or server-feature use. Segment by model and request class when possible.
- Preflight supported planned requests. Use Anthropic’s Messages API token-counting endpoint with the intended structured message shape and candidate model. It supports system prompts and client tools, and can count base64 images and PDFs. Anthropic cautions: “The token count is an estimate.” See Token counting.
- Use actual response usage when the endpoint cannot count the request. The token-counting documentation identifies unsupported server tools, MCP, and URL- or file-backed image/document sources. For those cases, examine representative API responses’
usagedata instead. - Count again for the candidate model. Do not blindly reuse a count from the current model: tokenizers can differ. Anthropic says Claude 4.7 and later models produce approximately 30% more tokens for the same text than earlier tokenizers, with variation by content and workload. That is not a guaranteed 30% cost increase; spend also depends on rates and the workload’s token categories.
- Price each category and scale by volume. Apply the current rate for ordinary input, output, cache writes, cache reads, and eligible batch traffic. Estimate representative per-request costs first, then multiply by expected request volume and add applicable separate charges.
How caching, batch, and tools change the estimate
Prompt caching
Prompt caching changes the price of qualifying input. For the listed models, five-minute cache writes cost 1.25 times base input, one-hour writes cost twice base input, and cache reads/hits cost 0.1 times base input. Include writes and reads as separate token categories; whether caching reduces total cost depends on cache duration and hit rate.
Batch processing
Anthropic lists a 50% discount on input and output tokens for supported Batch API processing. Model only requests that can actually run asynchronously in a batch; latency-sensitive synchronous traffic does not qualify merely because a batch rate is cheaper.
Tool and server-feature use
Tool definitions, tool calls, results, and the automatically included tool-use system prompt can add tokens. Some server-side tools also have separate usage charges. If your application uses API web search, Anthropic lists $10 per 1,000 searches, in addition to standard token charges for generated search content. Include the actual tool mix in the estimate.

The table reflects Anthropic’s first-party API list prices, not every way to access Claude. Anthropic’s October 7, 2026 pricing page says regional or multi-region endpoints on Bedrock and Google Cloud can carry a 10% premium over global endpoints for the model generations in scope there. Claude API first-party inference is global by default; its US-only inference option for Claude 4.6 and later has a 1.1× multiplier.
Cloud providers and marketplace routes may have different rates, billing arrangements, or discounts. Negotiated terms and account-specific pricing can also affect an invoice. Treat a calculation based on public rates as a list-price estimate unless you have verified your account’s terms.
How much will you save if you switch Claude models?
The arithmetic can estimate token spend, but only your usage data can estimate your saving. Compare the estimated total at your real traffic mix, then evaluate whether the candidate succeeds on the same work.
- Run representative, privacy-safe application cases against both models and score them with the same rubric.
- Include structured-output validation, tool-use completion, and retry or fallback behavior if your product depends on them.
- Compare task quality alongside latency, throughput, rate limits, context requirements, tool behavior, and feature compatibility.
- If your evaluation supports it, calculate cost per successful task—not only cost per token or request.
- Check model availability and lifecycle status before planning a migration. Anthropic says deprecated models remain functional until retirement, after which requests fail, and advises testing replacements well in advance. Confirm current status in its model deprecations documentation.
A lower-priced model is a good candidate only if its measured task outcomes and operational fit work for your application at the estimated spend.
