For a clearer streaming voice, start with the sound you actually hear: remove low rumble only if it is present, adjust a specific frequency only when it addresses an audible problem, and keep every change that improves clarity without making your voice harsh or thin. There is no universal microphone EQ preset; the right settings depend on your voice, mic, placement, and room.
Start by setting and checking your microphone level
Before changing EQ, set a reasonable input level at the microphone or audio interface. Then check the device signal and how it reaches OBS. This helps distinguish an EQ problem from a level problem. Make EQ changes to solve audible problems
Use a high-pass filter for audible rumble or boom
A high-pass filter reduces low frequencies. Try one only when you can hear unwanted rumble or boom; it is not a required step for every microphone. An OBS community guide gives around 60 Hz as an optional starting example, while emphasizing that the result varies by speaker and microphone. Treat it as a listening experiment, not a preset. Adjust presence carefully
If consonants are hard to understand, a modest boost in the upper midrange or treble may help. The same community guide offers a high-shelf example around 2,000–2,500 Hz, with a broad bandwidth of 2–3 octaves and a 6–10 dB boost. Those figures are one guide’s personal example, not a universal recommendation. A large boost can make a voice sound harsh; keep the setting only if playback sounds clearer and still natural.

Change one control at a time
Listen through headphones while adjusting, then record a typical speaking passage and listen to the playback. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped. Compare at a similar listening level, and reject a change that makes the voice thinner, harsher, or less intelligible. OBS also recommends recording a normal session and listening before going live in its Audio Mixer Guide.
Add EQ in OBS when you need detailed control
OBS documents a VST 2.x Plugin filter for adding compatible audio plug-ins. The community guide demonstrates ReaEQ through that filter. The menu path is to select the microphone source’s filters and add the VST 2.x Plugin filter; choose a compatible installed plug-in in its controls. Exact interface details can vary by OBS release and operating system, so check compatibility with your installation. The official OBS Filters Guide documents the filter, while the community guide shows a ReaEQ example.

When choosing between a simple built-in control and a parametric VST EQ, consider whether you need to target a specific audible frequency, whether the tool is already available or requires plug-in setup, and whether you have a definite sound problem to fix. The cited OBS documentation establishes VST 2.x filter support but does not establish built-in EQ availability across OBS versions; verify that against the version you use.
Choose the right tool for the problem
EQ changes tonal balance. It does not replace noise suppression, a gate, an expander, compression, gain adjustment, or a limiter. OBS lists these as separate audio filters in its Filters Guide. Use noise suppression for unwanted background noise, a gate or expander to control quieter sound between phrases, and a compressor when the voice varies too much in loudness. Avoid stacking filters simply because they are available: listen to the whole chain.

OBS describes a compressor as useful when a normally set microphone sometimes spikes much louder, such as during an unexpected shout. It lowers loud sounds and restores level as the sound returns to normal. Compression can manage level changes, but it does not correct poor microphone placement or an unsuitable EQ. An OBS community guide uses the sequence noise suppression, gate, EQ, then compression. That is one suggested workflow, not a rule for every setup; the best order depends on the problems you are correcting and what you hear.

Check the final signal for clipping
After processing, watch the meter at the end of the audio chain and review a normal recording. OBS says recorded or streamed audio should stay below 0 dBFS; output at or above that level can clip and distort. Its technical details identify −20 dBFS as an alignment level and −9 dBFS as its permitted maximum level. These describe OBS’s meter convention, not a required target for every platform or stream. If the recording distorts, lower the input or filter output that is driving the signal too high, then record and check again. Do not rely only on how the live monitor sounds: listen to the recorded result before going live.
