How to Enter VR Mode on Steam (Launch SteamVR)

Launch SteamVR from Steam’s VR control after setting up your headset, then confirm device readiness and follow any play-area prompts.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect and set up a compatible VR headset, open Steam on your PC, then click the VR control in the upper-right corner of the Steam client to launch SteamVR. Wait until the headset and other devices show as ready, then complete any room-setup prompts. The exact setup varies by headset.

How do I launch SteamVR from Steam?

  1. Set up the headset first. Install any software it requires and connect it to the PC. For Valve Index, that means DisplayPort to the graphics card, USB to the computer, and headset power; SteamVR should be installed and graphics drivers updated.
  2. Open Steam and start SteamVR. Click the VR control at the upper right of the Steam client. With Valve Index, you can also press the controller’s System button. Steam’s Valve Index Setup Guide documents both launch methods.
  3. Wait for the devices to be ready. For Index, the SteamVR status monitor should show all devices in green. If Steam prompts you to run Room Setup, follow the on-screen instructions before starting room-scale play.
  4. Launch a VR-compatible game. If you are unsure whether a title supports your headset, check its VR Support information on Steam. For Windows Mixed Reality, Steam recommends looking for the Windows Mixed Reality label; some titles may work without that specific label.

Set up SteamVR for your headset

Valve Index

Install SteamVR, connect the headset’s DisplayPort, USB, and power, then use Steam’s VR control or the Index controller’s System button to start SteamVR. Follow Room Setup if prompted. Valve recommends clearing enough space to move with arms and controllers outstretched. Its room-scale example is at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft); this is guidance for Index room-scale play, not a universal minimum for every headset or seated setup. Seated or standing-only use requires less space. See the Valve Index Setup Guide.

Windows Mixed Reality

Set up the headset and Windows Mixed Reality Portal before installing and launching SteamVR. SteamVR then begins its tutorial. Game requirements vary, and Steam’s suggested PC performance information is not a guarantee that every title will run. Check the game’s VR Support labels for headset compatibility. See Steam’s Windows Mixed Reality setup instructions.

Oculus Rift

Steam documents Rift support and says to enable Unknown Sources in the Oculus desktop app before running SteamVR. The path is Settings > General > Unknown Sources; confirm the prompt. When using Rift, the Xbox controller’s Back button can open or dismiss the SteamVR Dashboard. See SteamVR + Oculus Rift.

Wireless play with Steam Link

Steam Link is a separate wireless route for playing SteamVR games on supported standalone headsets; it is not the same as connecting a wired headset directly to the PC. Steam requires the PC to be running Steam and SteamVR, with the PC and headset on the same network. Install Steam Link from the headset or phone’s app store and follow its connection prompts. Steam lists Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro; PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, and PICO Neo 3; and HTC Vive Focus Vision and HTC VIVE XR Elite. Supported headset software versions, network conditions, and PC/GPU requirements can change, so check the current Steam Link support page for the latest requirements.

  • Check that the PC’s graphics drivers are up to date, then restart SteamVR. If the headset still is not ready, restart the headset or reboot the PC.
  • If Steam shows a headset-not-detected error, Steam’s troubleshooting flow may call for trying another USB port, power-cycling the applicable Link Box, restarting the computer, or enabling Direct Mode in SteamVR settings for applicable hardware and errors. These are troubleshooting steps, not routine requirements for launching SteamVR. Follow the relevant SteamVR troubleshooting guidance.

For Valve Index only, the headset LED can help identify its state: dull green means it is sleeping but ready to wake; blinking red indicates a startup error; steady red means display initialization failed; blue indicates standby; and off means there is no power. These LED meanings do not apply to other headset brands. See the Index Headset FAQ.
