You can end an encoder-based YouTube Live stream by stopping the content sent from your encoder. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s documented sequence is to click End Stream in Live Control Room and stop the encoder output. YouTube does not document that a playlist’s membership or playback position carries over to a new event, so do not assume a restart will resume the same loop where it stopped.
First, identify which playlist you mean
“Playlist” can mean videos queued or looped by your encoder, or a YouTube playlist associated with a stream or its watch page. Check both the encoder and YouTube Studio to establish how your loop is configured. YouTube’s guidance on ending and recreating streams does not explain whether either kind of playlist retains its playback position or membership after an event ends.

Before ending the current event, note the encoder’s active playlist and playback position, and save or verify the playlist configuration. If you need the next event to start at a particular video, be prepared to select that item in the encoder rather than relying on YouTube to resume it.

End an immediate encoder stream
- In your encoder, identify the active YouTube stream and confirm which playlist or media source it is sending.
- When you are ready to end the event, stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube Help’s encoder instructions say: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
- Check YouTube Studio to confirm the stream has ended. If you are using a scheduled event, follow the scheduled-event steps below as well.
End a scheduled event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the scheduled event.
- Click End Stream, then stop sending content from your encoder, as YouTube’s encoder guide instructs.
- Confirm the event has ended in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube.
- Check the event’s archive and your local recording, if you made one. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that archive is not evidence that a later event will continue the same playlist or playback position.
Prepare and start the next scheduled stream
If the next broadcast should be a new scheduled event, YouTube lets you reuse configuration from a previous stream:

- In Live Control Room, open the Manage tab and schedule a stream.
- Choose Reuse settings to copy the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and stream key, or choose Create new for a fresh setup. YouTube’s settings help also says the auto-start and auto-stop selections are copied when settings are reused.
- In the encoder, verify the selected playlist, its order, and the item from which playback should begin. Reusing YouTube settings copies stream configuration; it does not establish playlist-state persistence.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before the event is live. Confirm that the correct event is accessible from your channel and its watch page.
Scheduling can make an event appear as upcoming, allow viewers to request a reminder, and give you a URL to share. Those features do not establish that the previous event’s watch page or playlist continues into the new event.
Checks before you go live again
- Preview: Verify the video and audio in Live Control Room before starting the event.
- Playlist: Confirm the encoder is using the intended playlist and start item; do not assume it preserved the last playback position.
- Failover: YouTube recommends testing encoder failover so you know how your setup behaves if the primary feed fails.
- Recordings: Check that any local archive is intact. YouTube’s automatic archive for a stream under 12 hours is separate from a local recording.
- Access: Verify that the event can be reached from the channel and watch pages you plan to share.
