What drive encryption protects—and what it does not
Drive encryption makes data on a laptop harder to access if someone obtains the storage while the computer is off or otherwise unavailable for normal sign-in. It does not replace a strong account password, protect files from someone using an already-unlocked session, or serve as a backup. A recovery method matters because legitimate owners can be asked to prove access after a security check or system change.

How do I encrypt my laptop’s drive on Windows?
First check which built-in option your Windows edition and device support. Device Encryption may be available on some Windows Home devices; BitLocker Drive Encryption is available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.
Turn on Device Encryption
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption.
- Switch Device encryption on.
- Before depending on it, verify where the recovery key was saved and make sure you can access that location from another device.
If Device encryption is not listed, the laptop may not meet the hardware or Windows Recovery Environment requirements, or your signed-in account may not have administrator rights. Availability can depend on factors such as TPM status, Windows Recovery Environment configuration, and Secure Boot/PCR7 binding. Check those prerequisites or ask the device administrator rather than assuming encryption is active. Microsoft’s Device Encryption guidance describes availability and setup.

Use BitLocker Drive Encryption
On Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education, BitLocker offers manual drive-encryption controls. Open Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption, choose Turn on BitLocker for the drive, and follow the prompts to select an unlock method and save the recovery key. Confirm the saved key is accessible before relying on the encrypted drive.
Windows may ask for the recovery key if it detects a risk or a hardware, firmware, or software change. That request can affect the legitimate owner as well as someone attempting unauthorized access; it is not by itself proof that the laptop has been compromised. Where do I find my BitLocker recovery key?
A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit number. Depending on how encryption was activated and any device policy, the key may be in the Microsoft account used during setup, a work or school account, a USB flash drive, a saved file, or a printout. If your laptop is managed by an employer or school, its IT team may manage or hold the recovery information.
Search the account or location used when encryption was configured, and try the organization’s IT team for a managed device. Do not assume Microsoft can recover a missing key: Microsoft says it cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.

If you save a copy on a USB drive or paper, keep it somewhere separate from the laptop. A copy stored only on the encrypted computer will not help if the computer asks for the key before it can unlock.
How do I turn on FileVault on my Mac?
- Open the Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault.
- Choose Turn On and authenticate as an administrator.
- Choose the offered recovery route: use your Apple Account or create a recovery key. If you create a key, record it exactly and keep it somewhere other than the encrypted startup disk.
- If other people use accounts on the Mac and need to unlock its disk, enable those users for FileVault when prompted or through the FileVault settings.
Apple’s FileVault setup guide explains the available recovery choices. Its security guide describes a FileVault recovery key as a sequence of 24 random numbers and letters. Treat it as sensitive information and keep it separate from the Mac.

Do I need FileVault on an Apple silicon Mac?
It depends on the Mac’s hardware. Internal storage on Apple silicon and T2-chip Macs is encrypted automatically. With FileVault enabled, access to the encryption keys also requires user credentials. With FileVault off, Apple says the volume encryption key is protected only by the hardware UID; FileVault therefore adds a meaningful credential-based layer rather than turning encryption on for the first time.
On a Mac without Apple silicon or the T2 chip, Apple says FileVault must be turned on to encrypt the data. The distinction matters: it is inaccurate to say that every Mac needs FileVault for encryption, and also inaccurate to say that FileVault adds nothing on newer Macs. Both options chiefly protect stored data against offline access. The official setup and recovery guidance cited here does not establish a consumer performance comparison, so it is not a basis for assuming a particular speed penalty.
