Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To keep 4K videos manageable for a 24/7 YouTube stream, encode the stored loop files for the visual quality they need, then configure the separate live feed to YouTube’s current ingest requirements. A high bitrate recommended for uploading a 4K video is not automatically the right bitrate for an always-on live broadcast. Test a representative clip before encoding a full library: file size and visible quality depend on the footage, codec and settings.
Two separate jobs: the file and the live feed
A prerecorded video stored on disk can be compressed ahead of time. The live encoder then reads that file and sends a continuous feed to YouTube using live ingest settings. These are distinct stages: the file’s bitrate governs much of its storage size, while the outgoing live encoder’s settings govern the feed sent to YouTube.

YouTube’s upload guidance and live ingest guidance serve different workflows. For 2160p SDR video uploads, YouTube lists 35–45 Mbps at 24, 25 or 30 fps and 53–68 Mbps at 48, 50 or 60 fps. Those are upload recommendations, not requirements for a stored loop file or a universal target for live ingest. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations distinguish the upload workflow from live streaming.
Choose an encode that fits your footage
Confirm the source is actually 4K
Check the source dimensions, frame rate and whether it is SDR or HDR before choosing settings. YouTube defines 4K as 3840 × 2160 pixels; a file exported at that size from a lower-resolution source does not gain genuine 4K detail. The amount of motion, fine texture, gradients and dark detail also affects how efficiently a video can be compressed. YouTube’s explanation of 4K gives the resolution definition.

Use quality-based encoding when size can vary
A quality-based setting lets the encoder spend more data on complex scenes and less on simpler ones. In FFmpeg, CRF is a common quality-based control for libx264 and libx265. It does not promise a particular file size or a universally consistent visual result across different footage. The useful value depends on the encoder, codec and content, so treat it as an experiment rather than a magic number.
Encode a short, representative section at a few quality settings. Compare the clips at full resolution, especially fine detail, motion, gradients and dark areas, then compare their actual file sizes. Pick the smallest result that still looks acceptable for your use. FFmpeg documents constant-quality, constant-bitrate and variable-bitrate approaches in its video options reference.

Use bitrate targeting when predictable capacity matters
If you need to plan storage around a target average size, use a bitrate-targeted workflow and measure the resulting file. Quality-based encoding is not designed to land on a predetermined size. Include audio and container overhead in capacity estimates, and allow room for files whose average bitrate is higher than expected.
A planning estimate is: average bitrate × duration ÷ 8 = approximate bytes, before audio and container overhead. For example, a sustained 10 Mbps stream produces about 4.5 GB of decimal data per hour, or about 108 GB in 24 hours. This is arithmetic, not a YouTube storage recommendation; variable-bitrate files can differ as their content complexity changes.

Pick a codec your whole playback chain supports
For a locally operated stream, the codec must work both in the encoding tool and in the software that plays the file in real time. H.264 is a broadly useful compatibility choice. HEVC/H.265 or AV1 may suit a workflow whose encoders and playback software support them, but do not assume that a codec supported by YouTube ingest is also convenient for your local playback chain.
YouTube’s upload recommendations specify H.264. Its live ingest guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 in applicable configurations. That does not establish one universally best codec for source-file size or visual quality. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and confirm support in your encoder and player before building a long-running workflow.

Set the outgoing stream to YouTube’s live requirements
Configure the live encoder separately from the file encode. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) for live ingest and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Select the recommended bitrate for the codec and frame rate you actually use; the 4K recommendations differ by both.
| Live ingest format | YouTube recommended bitrate | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p / 4K, 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 30 Mbps | Live ingest recommendation on YouTube’s current settings page, surfaced in 2026 |
| 2160p / 4K, 30 fps, H.264 | 42 Mbps | Live ingest recommendation on YouTube’s current settings page, surfaced in 2026 |
| 2160p / 4K, 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 35 Mbps | Live ingest recommendation on YouTube’s current settings page, surfaced in 2026 |
| 2160p / 4K, 60 fps, H.264 | 50 Mbps | Live ingest recommendation on YouTube’s current settings page, surfaced in 2026 |
YouTube can revise its live settings table, so verify the current recommendations and the encoder’s available options before starting a continuous broadcast. These are ingest recommendations, not guarantees of a particular viewer-side quality; YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for different devices and network conditions.

Build and test a dependable 24/7 loop
- Check the source: confirm its true dimensions, frame rate, SDR/HDR status and audio before encoding.
- Test a representative clip: make short encodes at candidate quality or bitrate settings and inspect detail, movement, gradients and shadows at full resolution.
- Measure storage: note the actual average bitrate and output size, then estimate capacity for the loop and any retained archive. Include audio, container overhead and retention time.
- Check real-time playback: play the encoded file through the intended streaming setup and verify that the machine can decode it smoothly without dropped frames or audio problems.
- Configure live ingest: use CBR, choose YouTube’s current bitrate recommendation for the chosen codec and frame rate, and set a two-second keyframe interval.
- Test before going continuous: confirm video, audio, loop transitions and stream health in a short test. For a local setup, YouTube advises leaving upload-bandwidth headroom rather than using all available upstream capacity.
- Protect the archive: if the local library is part of your recovery plan, check that the files remain readable and account for how the archive grows over time.
YouTube’s live encoder settings cover ingest configuration; its live streaming tips cover bandwidth headroom, testing, archive checks and monitoring stream health.
Ways to keep a prerecorded stream running
- StreamNeo: keeps uploaded videos looping to YouTube from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on; it accepts the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. See StreamNeo.
- Local encoder and storage: play files from a computer and send the live feed through an encoder. You control the hardware and file library, but the computer, connection and playback chain must keep working continuously.
- Another hosted tool: YouTube’s verified-encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. The listing is not a YouTube endorsement; check the provider’s current capabilities and terms directly. YouTube’s verified-encoder directory.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel built around uploaded videos, StreamNeo’s workflow is upload, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price regardless of quality; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The file is still huge: resolution alone does not determine size. Try a quality-based encode on a representative clip, compare actual output sizes and inspect the result before applying settings to the full library.
- The picture looks soft or blocky: the chosen compression may be too aggressive for the motion or fine detail. Re-encode a sample at a less aggressive quality setting or higher target bitrate, then compare at full resolution.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: check upload capacity and leave headroom, then check whether local playback can decode the file in real time. YouTube’s ingest bitrate is for the outgoing live stream, not a suggested archive-file bitrate.
- The live encoder reports ingest or keyframe problems: confirm CBR, use a two-second keyframe interval (and no more than four seconds), and verify that the selected codec and bitrate match YouTube’s current settings for your resolution and frame rate.
- The loop fails after running for a while: test the entire playback and restart path, inspect the source files for corruption, and monitor stream health instead of assuming a short successful test proves continuous operation.
Copyright and YouTube channel policy still apply
Encoding and looping a video do not grant the right to broadcast it. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and check music, footage and other rights in every item in the playlist. A 24/7 format also does not by itself establish compliance with YouTube channel monetization rules: reused or repetitive material can raise separate policy questions. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content before broadcasting.
