To enable channel memberships, your channel must first qualify for YouTube’s monetization features. In YouTube Studio on a computer, go to Earn > Memberships > Get started, accept the Commerce Product Module (CPM), and set up compliant membership levels and perks. A 24/7 stream has no separate membership switch; the same channel eligibility and setup apply.
Check whether your channel is eligible
YouTube’s current channel-membership guidance sets these feature-specific thresholds: 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the past 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the past 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the past 90 days. You must also be at least 18 and live in a location where memberships are offered. India is covered by the location requirement when the channel is otherwise eligible; confirm your channel’s actual status in Studio > Earn, because availability and approval are determined by YouTube. YouTube’s channel-membership eligibility guidance is subject to change.
Memberships are a feature available through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), but their thresholds are not the whole YPP checklist. YouTube also requires compliance with monetization policies, a supported country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, advanced features access, and an AdSense for YouTube account. Meeting thresholds does not guarantee YPP acceptance: YouTube reviews the channel. See the YPP requirements and check Earn for your channel’s current requirements and status.
- The channel must not be set as Made for Kids, and a significant number of videos must not be set as Made for Kids.
- Music channels under SRAV are not eligible for channel memberships.
- You must accept the Commerce Product Module. YouTube’s review of membership levels and perks must also be completed before they go live.
Turn on memberships in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio for the channel you want to monetize.
- Select Earn in the left menu, then open Memberships. YouTube surfaces this tab only when it considers the channel eligible. If it is missing, check the channel’s status and any outstanding requirements under Earn.
- Select Get started and follow the on-screen setup. When prompted, review and accept the Commerce Product Module (CPM). The creator—and the MCN, where applicable—must accept the CPM for memberships revenue.
- Create membership levels and choose the perks for each. Supported benefits can include badges, emoji, posts, live chat, members-only live streams, and videos. Make sure each benefit follows YouTube’s policies; YouTube reviews levels and perks before they go live.
- If the channel belongs to a network, ask whether the network must enable memberships and accept the CPM under Studio > Settings > Agreements.
YouTube says approval can take up to two days after YPP acceptance while it reviews the channel. For official setup details, see YouTube’s channel-membership help page.

YouTube lists memberships among the features available for eligible live streams. The stream’s continuous format does not bypass channel eligibility or activation, and memberships do not require you to broadcast continuously. Once memberships are active, you can use eligible live-stream benefits such as members-only chat or members-only live streams, depending on how you configure them.

Member-only chat does not hide the public stream
If you enable members-only chat on a public stream, everyone can still watch the stream; only members can post in chat. When someone joins during a live stream, YouTube may show a new-member message in chat and pin the member’s profile image for five minutes. Plan separately for a replay
Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. YouTube can automatically archive a live stream shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the broadcast matters, make a local recording and keep enough storage for it. The archive limitation concerns replay preservation, not membership eligibility. Troubleshoot a missing tab or delayed setup
- Memberships is missing in Earn: YouTube only displays the tab when it considers the channel eligible. Check YPP status, the memberships thresholds, age and location availability, Made for Kids settings, SRAV status, and policy compliance in Studio.
- You meet the numbers but cannot activate it: Subscriber, upload, watch-hour, or Shorts-view thresholds do not guarantee approval. Check whether YPP review is complete, whether your channel has any policy or account requirements outstanding, and whether the CPM has been accepted.
- The channel is managed by an MCN: The network may need to allow memberships and accept the CPM in Studio’s Agreements settings.
- The stream has no complete replay: A continuous stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep a local recording if you need an archive.
