Choose H.265/HEVC when you are exporting a genuine HDR video and your editing workflow preserves its 10-bit color and HDR signaling. H.265 is not automatically better for every YouTube upload, and the official guidance reviewed does not set a different codec rule for India.
H.264 or H.265: which should you use?

The key distinction is dynamic range, not whether a video is 1080p or 4K. For SDR, follow YouTube’s H.264 recommendation. For HDR, use a codec and export workflow that correctly retain HDR color information; H.265 is one supported option, not a universal upgrade.
Does YouTube support H.265 uploads in India?
The official YouTube upload guidance covered here does not state a separate India-specific codec requirement. It names H.264 for general recommended upload settings and lists H.265/HEVC among the recommended HDR codecs. There is no basis in that guidance to say H.265 is required in India, or that choosing a codec based on Indian viewers’ network conditions is necessary.
Recommended settings for a pre-recorded upload
YouTube recommends an MP4 container and identifies H.264 as its general video codec recommendation. Its named H.264 settings include progressive scan, High Profile, two consecutive B frames, a closed GOP, CABAC, variable bitrate, and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709 color. Use the same frame rate as the recording: YouTube’s guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”

YouTube’s recommended SDR video bitrates
The figures below are YouTube’s current guidance as accessed in 2026, not figures tied to a stated publication year.

These are upload recommendations for SDR video; they are not live-stream ingestion settings. Keep the export frame rate matched to the source rather than converting it simply to reach a bitrate row with a higher number.

HDR export checks
If the source is genuinely HDR, do not treat an HDR label in an editor as sufficient by itself. YouTube’s HDR guidance calls for 10-bit or 12-bit depth, Rec. 2020 primaries, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Preserve the valid HDR metadata and color signaling during export. If your workflow cannot retain those correctly, do not assume an H.265 export will produce a correct HDR upload.
Why live-stream settings are different
“Pre-recorded YouTube streaming” can mean uploading a finished file, or playing a finished file as a YouTube Live broadcast. For a normal upload, use the upload guidance above. YouTube’s live encoder guidance is a separate set of requirements: it permits H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live ingestion and provides live-specific bitrate settings. Those live bitrate figures should not be substituted for the pre-recorded upload targets in this article.

If you want a pre-recorded video to appear as a continuous YouTube Live stream, the codec decision for the uploaded file and the live-streaming method are related but distinct. The file still needs an appropriate encode; the live service or encoder must separately meet YouTube’s live ingestion requirements.
Common codec and upload problems
- HDR looks washed out or is treated as SDR: Check that the export retained the source’s HDR color signaling and metadata, including the appropriate Rec. 2020 primaries and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics.
- Upload or processing takes longer than expected: A high-bitrate export creates a larger file to transfer and process. This is a particular consideration for H.264 10-bit HDR, which YouTube says may need very high bitrates.
- The uploaded motion looks different from the source: Confirm that the exported frame rate matches the recording. Avoid changing frame rate without a specific production need.
- You are copying a livestream bitrate into an upload export: Stop and check which YouTube workflow the setting belongs to. Live ingestion recommendations are not upload bitrate targets.
For other upload playback or processing problems, use YouTube’s official troubleshooting guidance for audio or video issues with uploads.
