Windows Hello is configured at Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Set up a Windows Hello PIN first; then add fingerprint or face sign-in if your PC has compatible hardware. A normal webcam cannot provide Windows Hello Face, which requires an infrared (IR) camera.
Important for 2026: Microsoft ended regular Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Hello may still work on an eligible installation, but Windows 10 no longer receives normal free security and feature updates. Upgrade to a supported Windows release where your hardware permits. What Windows Hello does
Windows Hello is Windows’ device-based sign-in system. Depending on the computer, it can use a PIN, fingerprint, facial recognition, or a physical security key instead of requiring the account password at every unlock. Supported Hello credentials can also authenticate to compatible Microsoft and web services.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe Hello PIN belongs to the specific PC; it is not a replacement password that works across your account on other devices. Keep the account password available for recovery and account changes. Hello can reduce routine password entry, but it is not identical to Microsoft account passwordless mode, Windows Hello for Business, or a FIDO2 security key. Security still depends on the device, PIN quality, TPM and account protections, malware defenses, and physical access control. Microsoft’s Hello overview describes the available methods.
#1 Best Overall

- Business-ready, pocket-friendly - With advanced face recognition technology, this Windows Hello (4.1) FHD webcam enables multiple users to login securely, easily – without entering a password or switching accounts. It’s also very affordably-priced, too.
- Resolution; RGB Mode 1920 x 1080 (MJPG) @ 30 frame rate (default); IR Mode: 352 x 352 @ 15 frame rate
- Interface: Type-C Cable Length: 1.8 m (5.9 ft)
Check these prerequisites
- You can sign in with the account password or another existing method.
- Windows 10 is updated as far as the PC supports.
- A PIN can normally be created without biometric hardware.
- Fingerprint enrollment needs a recognized Windows Hello-compatible reader.
- Face enrollment needs a Hello-compatible illuminated IR camera; an ordinary RGB webcam is not enough.
- Manufacturer drivers, firmware, device policies, and account type can change what appears.
- A work or school administrator may disable Hello methods.

Set up the Windows Hello PIN
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Accounts, then Sign-in options.
- Under Manage how you sign in to your device, select Windows Hello PIN.
- Choose Add or Set up.
- Verify the account password if Windows asks.
- Create and confirm the PIN.
Builds and translated editions may use slightly different labels, but the path remains Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. This PIN-only setup is valid Hello protection even when the PC has no camera or fingerprint reader.
Enable fingerprint sign-in
Enroll a built-in or external reader
- Complete the Hello PIN setup first.
- Return to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Select Windows Hello Fingerprint, then Set up or Add a finger.
- Enter the PIN or other credential when prompted.
- Touch and lift the same finger repeatedly as the wizard requests. Scan the edges and alternate angles when prompted.
- Add a second finger, preferably both index fingers, for reliability.
- Press Windows + L to lock the PC and test the reader.
Use a clean, dry finger. Re-enroll if recognition deteriorates, and keep the PIN available because Windows can require it after a restart, a security event, or repeated failed scans.

- Make it your own: The Logi Options+ app (3) simplifies personal device control with zoom in/out, color presets, color adjustments, set manual focus, and easy firmware updates
Drivers for USB readers
An external reader may need a manufacturer package or an optional Windows Update driver. For example, Kensington’s Windows 10 VeriMark instructions direct users to check View optional updates for the biometric driver before enrollment (Kensington setup guide). Do not assume Windows Update always supplies a working driver.
Enable Windows Hello Face
Hello Face requires a compatible infrared camera that can map your face securely. A standard built-in or USB RGB webcam normally cannot be converted into a Hello Face camera by software alone.
- Set up the Hello PIN.
- Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Select Windows Hello Face or Facial recognition (Windows Hello).
- Choose Set up and position your face in front of the camera.
- Complete the scan. If offered, use the improvement option with glasses or other normal appearance changes.
If Face is absent, likely causes include unsupported camera hardware, a missing or disabled driver, blocked camera access, or organizational policy.

- Unlock your Computer Quickly and Securely: Compatible with Windows Hello makes your computer everyday use smoother. - Slide shutter: This USB camera is with sliding privacy cover and easy to physically block the camera when not in use.
- Plug and play: This webcam included USB C cable and USB A adapter that make it easy to plug into almost any devices.
Test Hello and retain a fallback
Lock the computer with Windows + L, then select the fingerprint, face, or PIN icon on the lock screen. Keep a working password or PIN before removing a biometric method. If biometrics fail, select Sign-in options and choose the PIN or password icon.
When a Hello option is missing or fails
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| PIN says it is unavailable | Account, policy, TPM, or Windows configuration issue | Install available updates, restart, verify the account, and ask the administrator whether the PC is managed. |
| Fingerprint is missing | No compatible reader, disabled hardware, or missing driver | Check Device Manager, install the PC or reader manufacturer driver, and confirm Windows Hello compatibility. |
| Face is missing | The camera is an ordinary webcam rather than an IR Hello camera | Use the PIN or add a compatible IR camera. |
| “We couldn’t find a fingerprint scanner compatible with Windows Hello” | Reader is not recognized or lacks required compatibility or driver | Reconnect it, update drivers, inspect Device Manager, and follow the manufacturer’s support instructions. |
| Enrollment repeatedly fails | Dirty sensor, poor scan, damaged driver, or policy restriction | Clean the sensor, re-enroll, update firmware and drivers, or contact IT. |
| Hello worked and then stopped | Driver or Windows change, sensor failure, or credential corruption | Sign in with the PIN or password, remove and re-add the biometric method, and update the device. |
| External reader is detected but will not enroll | Unsupported peripheral, driver problem, or organization policy | Use a device explicitly certified for Windows Hello and check with the administrator. |
Availability varies by configuration. Microsoft’s guidance on Windows sign-in options and third-party fingerprint readers and cameras lists additional compatibility limits.
Check hardware in Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Inspect Biometric devices, Cameras, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for warning icons or unknown devices.
- Right-click the device and choose Enable device if disabled, or Update driver.
- Use Uninstall device followed by a restart only when appropriate and when the manufacturer driver is available.
Obtain drivers from the PC or accessory manufacturer, not generic driver-download sites.

Accounts and administrator policy
Local accounts, personal Microsoft accounts, work or school accounts, domain-joined PCs, and Microsoft Entra ID devices can expose different sign-in controls. A company-managed computer may hide or disable biometrics through policy; contact IT rather than changing the registry or bypassing policy.
Windows Hello for Business is an enterprise deployment architecture involving provisioning, identity management, TPM and organizational policy. Consumer setup steps here do not configure that system.
Recommended Free Tools
Remove or reset Hello credentials
- Remove a fingerprint or face enrollment at Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
- Use I forgot my PIN when shown and complete account verification.
- Keep a password or another recovery method before deleting the only convenient sign-in option.
- If a sensor is replaced, delete the old enrollment and create it again.
Do not begin by deleting Hello folders or registry keys; those actions can create additional credential problems, especially on managed PCs.

Choose hardware when the PC has no sensor
| Option | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| PIN-only Hello | Any eligible Windows 10 PC | No purchase; relies on protecting the device PIN. |
| External Windows Hello fingerprint reader | Desktop or laptop users wanting local biometric unlock | Uses a USB port and may need vendor drivers, firmware, and policy approval. Confirm explicit Windows Hello certification; Kensington’s VeriMark Desktop Fingerprint Key is one documented example. |
| FIDO2 security key | Passwordless authentication for supported Microsoft accounts, Entra ID tenants, browsers, and websites | Not the same as a local Hello fingerprint reader; may require USB, NFC, touch, or a key PIN. |
| FIDO2 key with fingerprint | Online authentication with biometric protection in the key | Compatibility must be checked separately for each account and service. Yubico distinguishes its YubiKey Bio Series from regular security keys. |
Microsoft says compatible USB cameras and fingerprint readers can be added, but it does not support every third-party peripheral. Buy only hardware that documents Windows Hello compatibility; a generic “biometric” label is not enough. A standard security-key example is Yubico Security Key NFC. Current prices are not stated here because they vary by seller and model.
Frequently asked questions
Can Windows Hello work without a fingerprint reader?
Yes. The Hello PIN works without biometric hardware.
Can I use a normal webcam for Hello Face?
No. Face sign-in requires a compatible IR camera.
Why does Windows request my PIN after a restart?
Windows can require the PIN after a restart, security event, or failed biometric attempts. It is an intended fallback, not evidence that enrollment was erased.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can Hello be used on a work computer?
Possibly, but administrator policy may restrict it. Ask your organization’s IT team.
Does Hello still work on Windows 10 after support ended?
It can continue to function on an eligible installation, but Windows 10 itself is past regular support as of October 14, 2025.
