To turn on Wi‑Fi Calling, enable it in your phone’s cellular or SIM settings and make sure your carrier supports the feature for your line. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular; on Android, the documented Google Phone path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. The exact Android labels can vary by manufacturer.
Before you start: check carrier support
Wi‑Fi Calling routes calls through an internet connection, but it is still a carrier service. Your carrier and account must be eligible; turning on a phone setting cannot add support that the carrier does not provide. Google notes that not all carriers support calls over Wi‑Fi, and charges may apply. Check your carrier’s eligibility and rates before relying on the feature or assuming calls are free. Google’s Wi‑Fi Calling guidance explains the carrier dependency.

How to enable Wi‑Fi Calling on iPhone
- Open Settings > Cellular.
- If you use Dual SIM or have multiple lines, tap the line you want to configure.
- Tap Wi‑Fi Calling, then turn on Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone.
- If prompted, tap Enable and enter or confirm the address your carrier requests for emergency services.
When the feature is active and available, “Wi‑Fi” appears with the carrier indicator in Control Center. Apple’s instructions and availability qualifications are in Apple’s Wi‑Fi Calling setup guide.
How to enable Wi‑Fi Calling on Android
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Select the carrier SIM you want to configure.
- Tap Wi‑Fi calling and switch it on.
This is Google’s documented path for the Phone app flow on Android 6.0 and later. Phone makers and software versions may use different names or layouts, so look under your selected SIM’s calling or network settings if the labels do not match. Google says an absent setting can mean that the carrier does not support the feature. See Google Phone app Help for its instructions.

What happens to calls and emergency calls?
With an internet connection, the phone may indicate “Internet Call” or “Wi‑Fi calling.” If Wi‑Fi is unavailable, calls can use the mobile carrier when cellular service is available; Wi‑Fi Calling does not guarantee that a call will stay on Wi‑Fi.
Emergency calling needs particular care. Apple says iPhone uses cellular service for emergency calls when available; if cellular service is unavailable, a call may use Wi‑Fi Calling. Location information may help response efforts, and some carriers may use the emergency address registered to the line. Keep that address current, and understand that Wi‑Fi-based emergency location may be less reliable. Apple describes these details in its setup guidance and emergency-calls privacy information. Emergency requirements and carrier procedures can vary by country and provider.

If Wi‑Fi Calling is missing or will not activate
- Verify eligibility first. Ask your carrier whether Wi‑Fi Calling is supported for your country, device, account, and specific line. If the option is absent, carrier support is a key thing to check.
- Update your phone software. Apple includes an update check among its troubleshooting steps.
- Restart the phone. On Android, Google says restarting may help if the phone detects a problem and disables Wi‑Fi Calling; the carrier may need to reactivate it.
- Try another Wi‑Fi network. Not every Wi‑Fi network works with the feature.
- On iPhone, toggle Wi‑Fi Calling off and on. If it still fails after the earlier checks, Apple lists resetting network settings as a later troubleshooting step. This can remove saved network configuration, so try less disruptive checks first.
If the setting remains unavailable or activation repeatedly fails, contact the carrier: the cause may be account provisioning or local service eligibility rather than the phone’s Wi‑Fi connection.
