If cellular reception is weak indoors, you can make ordinary carrier calls over a working Wi-Fi connection by turning on Wi-Fi Calling—provided your carrier supports it for your line and phone. Connect to Wi-Fi, enable the setting on your iPhone or Android, complete any emergency-address prompt, then look for the Wi-Fi Calling indicator.
Before you turn on Wi-Fi Calling
Wi-Fi Calling carries calls through an internet-connected Wi-Fi network instead of relying on a strong indoor cellular signal. It still uses your mobile carrier’s calling service, so the carrier must support the feature for your device and line. Check with your provider if the option is missing or activation fails.

Check that Wi-Fi Calling is available
On iPhone, look for “Wi-Fi” after your carrier name in the status bar. On Android, Google says the notification screen may show “Internet Call” or “Wi-Fi calling” when the phone is connected to the internet. You can also place a routine call to check whether your setup works in your location; the indicator and routing behavior may depend on your device and carrier.

If the setting is missing or calls do not use Wi-Fi
- Confirm carrier eligibility: Ask your provider whether Wi-Fi Calling is available for your specific line and phone.
- Check the internet connection: Wi-Fi Calling needs a working connection to the internet, not just a connection to a router.
- Check the selected line: On a dual-SIM iPhone, make sure you enabled the feature for the intended line.
- Check carrier-specific instructions: Some Android phones use a carrier app or a different menu. Google Fi, for example, uses its app’s Phone settings.
- Ask about plan terms: Charges and calling terms vary by provider. Google advises checking with your provider because Wi-Fi calls may incur additional charges.
What happens if Wi-Fi drops during a call?
Whether a call switches to cellular depends on the phone, carrier, and available services. Apple says an iPhone call may move to the carrier’s cellular network using VoLTE if Wi-Fi is lost and VoLTE is available and enabled. Google Fi says it selects between Wi-Fi and cellular based on which network provides the better experience and can switch to cellular if Wi-Fi weakens or drops. That Google Fi behavior should not be assumed for other carriers. Google Pixel guidance also notes that calls may route over Wi-Fi or the carrier network based on preference or signal strength; see Google’s Phone app guidance.
Emergency calls: keep your address current
Emergency calling over Wi-Fi has limitations. Apple says an iPhone uses cellular service for emergency calls when available; if cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled, an emergency call may use Wi-Fi. Your carrier may use the address registered for Wi-Fi Calling to route emergency services, so update it if you move. Apple also cautions that an iPhone connected to Wi-Fi Calling may not receive emergency alerts. When available, traditional cellular or fixed-line service is preferable for emergency calls. Read Apple’s setup guidance and Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling privacy and emergency-calling information.
