Choose an authenticator app or SMS, verify the code Sony sends or generates, and save your backup codes before you finish.
Choose an authenticator app or SMS
Sony offers two methods: an authenticator app or text message to your registered mobile number. An app requires access to the device and app you configure; SMS requires access to that phone number and a working mobile network. Sony’s guide gives Authy, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator as examples of authenticator apps, not as an exhaustive list or endorsement. Sony does not provide comparative security measurements for these methods in the cited setup instructions, so choose based on which one you can reliably access.

With either method, your account password and sign-in ID remain part of the sign-in flow. 2SV adds a verification code as an additional step. Sony describes it this way: “By activating 2-Step Verification, we’ll add a second layer of security to your account.” — PlayStation 2-step verification overview.
Enable 2SV through Account Management on the web
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management and open Security.
- Next to 2-step Verification Status, select Edit.
- Choose Authenticator App or Text Message.
- If you choose an authenticator app, scan the QR code with the app. If scanning does not work, enter the alphanumeric code shown on screen into the app. If you choose text message, enter your mobile number.
- Enter the verification code from your selected method, then choose Activate.
- Save the backup codes displayed during setup somewhere safe.
Enable 2SV on a PS5 or PS4
On PS5
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose an available method and follow the verification prompts.
- Save the backup codes shown during setup somewhere safe.
On PS4
- Open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Choose an available method and follow the verification prompts.
- Save the backup codes shown during setup somewhere safe.
These are Sony’s menu paths; software updates or regional localization may change the wording slightly. See Sony’s 2SV setup guide if a label differs on your console.

When Sony asks for a verification code
Sony says a verification code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If it expires, select Resend Code. Sony lists these situations as requiring a code: the first sign-in after activating 2SV, signing in after manually signing out, resetting the account password, and changing the sign-in ID (email address) or online ID. The exact prompt may depend on the sign-in situation.
Save and use your backup codes
Backup codes provide a way to sign in when you cannot use your usual verification method. Sony says you can view them in Account Management under Security > Backup Codes while signed in, but you cannot check them online if you cannot sign in. Keep them somewhere secure and accessible when your phone is not.

Sony’s US troubleshooting instructions state that there are 10 backup codes and each can be used once. At the sign-in prompt, choose the backup-code option and enter one. If you have used them all, Sony says you can get new codes by turning off and reactivating 2SV. Follow the steps in PlayStation’s 2SV troubleshooting guide.

If you cannot receive a code or access your phone
For a missing SMS
- Select Resend Code and wait a few minutes.
- Restart your phone, check that airplane mode is off, and confirm you have mobile signal.
- If the network problem continues, contact your mobile carrier.
- If those steps do not resolve it, use PlayStation’s Online Assistant.
If your phone or number is unavailable
If you cannot access your registered phone number and do not have backup codes, Sony directs you to the Online Assistant to restore account access. Use the same 2SV issues support page to reach it.

- IP68 WATERPROOF & BATTERY-FREE: Crush-resistant one-piece construction survives daily carry on a keychain or in a bag for years without any batteries.
- UNIVERSAL COMPATIBILITY: Works with Google, Microsoft, Apple, GitHub, AWS, and any FIDO2 / U2F / WebAuthn service, storing up to 100 passkeys.
How passkeys fit in
Sony also offers passkey sign-in, a separate sign-in experience rather than a step in the 2SV setup above. Its US guide describes enabling passkeys under Account Management > Security and lists support for PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac. Sony says most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later support passkeys, though device and browser behavior can vary. See Sony’s passkey sign-in guide for details. The cited guides do not establish that passkeys and 2SV can be enabled simultaneously for every account configuration.
