| Method | What to know |
|---|---|
| Authenticator app | Use a code generated by a third-party authentication app. You need access to that app when signing in; Meta’s guidance does not require one specific app. Meta’s security guidance |
| SMS | A login code is sent by text message, so you need access to the phone number on the account and the ability to receive SMS. Meta’s security guidance |
| Security key | A physical key is an optional method for Facebook. Meta supports third-party U2F or FIDO2 keys; check that the key works with your device, browser, and connection type. Meta’s Facebook security-key instructions |
Set up a security key on Facebook
A security key is not required to enable 2FA. If you choose this method for Facebook, Meta says to use a third-party Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) or FIDO2 key. Supported key types may use USB, Lightning, Bluetooth, or NFC. Check compatibility with the device and browser you use to sign in before buying a key.

Facebook recovery codes
For Facebook, Meta documents 10 recovery codes. Each code can be used once in place of an authentication code at login. If you lose the codes or use them all, you can request a new set. Keep them somewhere secure that you can reach without the device used for your usual second factor. Meta’s Facebook recovery-code instructions
Instagram contact details
Keep the email address and phone number linked to Instagram current and accessible. Meta advises trying to regain access to the linked email or phone, or updating contact information while you are still logged in. Meta says it may be unable to restore access if you cannot reach the registered email and have not linked Instagram and Facebook. Meta’s Instagram account-access guidance
