What the AllowMiniMap setting does
Project Zomboid stores many world rules in a Lua-formatted sandbox variables file. The minimap switch is the AllowMiniMap entry in that file. A value of false prevents the server from allowing the minimap; changing it to true enables the feature for players connecting to that server.

This is a server-side setting. Changing a client option alone will not override a server that disallows the minimap. The server must load the edited sandbox file during startup, which is why the server needs to be stopped before editing and restarted after saving.
Before you edit the server
- Have administrative access. You need access to the server’s files, either through the machine’s file system or through your hosting panel’s file manager.
- Know the active world or server name. The sandbox file is named from that configuration rather than always using one universal filename.
- Stop the server cleanly. Editing while the process is running can leave the old values in memory or allow the running process to overwrite your changes when it shuts down.
- Keep a copy of the original file. A backup lets you restore the previous sandbox values if a formatting mistake prevents the server from loading the configuration.
Do not search by a fixed line number. Different files and game configurations place the setting at different positions; setup instructions have cited line 501, 446, and 778 for different files. The text search is the dependable way to find it.

Find the correct sandbox variables file
Typical server-folder layout
One commonly described layout places the file under Zomboid/Server/<WorldName>, with the sandbox variables file named world_SandboxVars.lua. Replace <WorldName> with the name used by your server. In another common default configuration, the file is named dedicated_SandboxVars.lua.
Those names are examples, not interchangeable files. A server can have several worlds or old configuration files in the same directory. Edit the file belonging to the world that your server actually starts. If your panel lists multiple sandbox files, check the server’s configured world name before changing one.
Hosting-panel file managers
Panels such as Pterodactyl and Starbase generally expose server files through a Files tab or a similarly named file manager. Open that area, browse to the server configuration directory, and look for the file ending in _SandboxVars.lua. The exact directory labels vary by host, but the search term and setting name remain the same.

Local or self-hosted installations
On a machine you manage directly, open the server’s Zomboid/Server directory with the operating system’s file browser or a text editor. If you are unsure which file is active, search the directory for AllowMiniMap and then compare the filename with the world name in your launch configuration. Avoid editing unrelated copies left over from earlier worlds.
Step-by-step: turn on the minimap
- Stop the Project Zomboid server. Use the panel’s Stop control or the normal shutdown command for a self-hosted process. Wait until the process is fully stopped before opening the file for editing.
- Open the active sandbox file. In a panel, use the Files tab; on a local installation, open the relevant file in
Zomboid/Server. Depending on the world name, it may look likeworld_SandboxVars.luaor use the default namededicated_SandboxVars.lua. - Search for the setting. Use
Ctrl+F(or your editor’s search command) and enterAllowMiniMap. Searching is safer than scrolling because line numbers differ between configurations. - Change the Boolean value. Replace the existing entry so it reads exactly:
AllowMiniMap = true,Lua sandbox tables normally separate entries with commas. Preserve the comma when the setting is followed by another entry. Keep the spelling and capitalization exactly as shown; AllowMinimap, allowMiniMap, and quoted values are not the same setting.
- Add the entry if it is missing. If your file has no active
AllowMiniMapline, one published setup procedure advises adding it inside the mainSandboxVarstable, followed by a comma. Place it alongside the other sandbox variables, not outside the table or inside a comment.

}If you find a line beginning with comment characters, it is not active configuration. Remove the comment marker only when adding the active setting in the correct table; do not leave two conflicting active entries in the same table.

- Save the file without changing its format. Use plain text and retain the
.luaextension. Do not save it as a word-processing document or append an extra extension such as.lua.txt. In a hosting panel, wait for the file manager to confirm the save completed. - Restart the server. Start it from the panel or launch command after the edit has been saved. The sandbox variables are read at startup, so joining an already-running process will not apply the new value.
Verify that players can use the minimap
Join the server with a character after the restart. Press M, which is the default map key, and check whether the minimap window appears. If you have rebound the map key in your client controls, use that binding instead.
Test with a normal player account as well as an administrator account when possible. This distinguishes a server-wide setting from an interface or key-binding issue on one client. If the map opens but player markers are absent, that is a separate visibility configuration described below; it does not by itself show that AllowMiniMap failed.
Troubleshooting when the minimap does not appear
The setting reverted to false
Stop the server again and inspect the file that belongs to the active world. Multiple sandbox files can exist, and changing an unused copy has no effect. Confirm that the saved line is AllowMiniMap = true,, then check the panel’s file timestamp or reopen the file to verify that the change persisted.

The line is in the wrong place
An entry outside the SandboxVars table, inside a comment, or after a prematurely closed table will not be read as the intended variable. Move the entry into the table with the other sandbox settings and retain the comma expected by the surrounding Lua syntax. Remove duplicate active entries so there is one clear value.

A missing comma, unmatched brace, or accidental formatting change can make the sandbox file invalid. Restore the backup you made before editing, start the server to confirm recovery, and then reapply only the single minimap change. If the panel provides a console log, inspect the startup error for the file and line it identifies rather than guessing at unrelated settings.
The server starts, but the old behavior remains
Make sure the process was fully stopped before the edit and that the restart completed afterward. A panel can show a stopped status while a shutdown is still finishing; wait until its console no longer reports the running process. Reopen the active file after saving to ensure the panel did not discard an unsaved browser edit.
The map key does nothing
Check the client’s control binding first. The default is M, but a player can assign another key or create a conflict with another action. Test the map command in a different key configuration before changing server files again.

Minimap availability and remote-player visibility are separate controls. Player visibility is configured in pzserver.ini, using a setting such as MapRemotePlayerVisibility. Changes to that file also require a server restart. Do not use the player-visibility setting as a substitute for AllowMiniMap; the former controls what can be seen on the map, while the latter controls whether the minimap is allowed at all.
A panel has an old “Allow Mini-Map” switch
Some older instructions describe an Allow Mini-Map option in a web panel’s in-game map settings. That interface reflects an older build or panel workflow and may not control the current server configuration. The sandbox file’s AllowMiniMap value is the more dependable route for a current setup. If a panel switch and the file disagree, stop the server and verify the file that the running world actually uses.
Editing safely on a multi-world server
Match the world name first
When a server hosts more than one world, each world can have its own sandbox variables file. Identify the world selected by the startup command or panel before editing. Enabling the value in one world’s file will not automatically enable it in another.
Keep the change narrowly scoped
Change only the minimap variable unless you intend to alter other gameplay rules. Sandbox files contain many unrelated settings; deleting or reformatting surrounding entries can change the world in ways that are difficult to diagnose. A one-line edit also makes rollback straightforward.
Record the original value
If the original line was AllowMiniMap = false,, keep that value in your backup or change record. To disable the feature later, repeat the same procedure and set the value back to false, then restart the server so the new sandbox state is loaded.
