Windows 10 normally moves deleted files to the Recycle Bin without asking. To restore an “Are you sure?” prompt, right-click Recycle Bin, choose Properties, enable Display delete confirmation dialog, then select Apply and OK. The prompt applies to normal Explorer deletions that are sent to the Recycle Bin—not every permanent-deletion or third-party-app action.
Turn on delete confirmation in Windows 10
- Go to the Windows 10 desktop and locate Recycle Bin.
- Right-click Recycle Bin and select Properties.
- In the General area (or under the relevant drive), check Display delete confirmation dialog.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Select a disposable file in File Explorer and press Delete.
- Choose the confirmation dialog’s delete or cancel option. Microsoft documents the same Recycle Bin Properties method in its Windows 10 guidance.
When enabled, Windows displays a confirmation before the normal delete operation moves the item to the Recycle Bin.
Test the setting safely
Create or choose a disposable text file, select it in File Explorer, and press Delete. A confirmation prompt should appear before the file is moved to the Recycle Bin. Select No or Cancel to verify that the file remains in place, then repeat the test and confirm deletion if needed.
If the Recycle Bin icon is missing
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then Themes.
- Select Desktop icon settings.
- Check Recycle Bin and select OK.
These steps are documented by Microsoft in Find the Recycle Bin in Windows and Customize the desktop icons in Windows. If every desktop icon is hidden, right-click the desktop, choose View, and enable Show desktop icons.

Enable confirmation with Local Group Policy
Use this administrator method on Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, Education, or IoT Enterprise. Windows 10 Home generally does not include Local Group Policy Editor.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
gpedit.msc, and press Enter. - Go to User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → File Explorer.
- Open Display confirmation dialog when deleting files.
- Select Enabled, then Apply and OK.
- Sign out and back in, or restart File Explorer, if the change is not immediate.
Microsoft identifies this user policy as ConfirmFileDelete; edition and policy details are listed in the ADMX_WindowsExplorer Policy CSP.

Use the Registry as an advanced fallback
Registry editing is useful on Windows 10 Home or when the graphical option is unavailable, but it is not the preferred consumer method. First, open Registry Editor, select the key below, and use File → Export to create a backup.

- In Registry Editor, navigate to that key.
- Create or edit a DWORD (32-bit) Value named
ConfirmFileDelete. - Set its value data to
1. - Close Registry Editor, then sign out and back in or restart File Explorer.
Set ConfirmFileDelete to 0, or delete the value, to return to the non-confirmation state. An incorrect registry edit can affect your user profile or Windows behavior, and domain, MDM, or Group Policy settings can overwrite a manual change. Microsoft documents this registry mapping in its policy reference.
What the dialog does—and does not—confirm

The confirmation option is a safeguard against accidental ordinary deletions, especially Delete-key mistakes. It does not replace backups, recovery procedures, or access controls.

Why the prompt may still not appear
- Reopen Recycle Bin Properties and verify Display delete confirmation dialog remains checked; select Apply before closing.
- Test with a normal local file, not an application-specific object.
- Check that the command is not permanently deleting the item or emptying the Recycle Bin.
- Some removable, network, synchronized, or specially configured locations may not use the standard Recycle Bin workflow.
- Sign out and back in after a Group Policy or registry change.
- On a managed computer, an organization’s policy may control, hide, or overwrite the setting.
If Recycle Bin Properties is missing
The NoRecycleBinProperties policy can remove the Properties command from the Recycle Bin context menu. Microsoft maps it to NoPropertiesRecycleBin under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer. See the ADMX_Desktop Policy CSP; on a work or school device, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass policy.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 version 22H2 was the final feature update. Standard Windows 10 Home and Pro support ended on October 14, 2025, so these instructions remain usable on existing installations but do not restore security or technical-support updates. A separate Windows 10 22H2 issue once displayed an internal $Rxxxxx.ext name when permanently deleting one Recycle Bin item. Microsoft marked that issue resolved by KB5099539, released July 14, 2026, and later updates; it is unrelated to enabling the ordinary delete-confirmation prompt.
