What split-screen multitasking is (and why Android 13 supports it)
Split screen displays two apps simultaneously: one in the left pane and one in the right pane (or top/bottom depending on orientation and device). Android 13 keeps the core behavior consistent, but the exact UI labels can vary by manufacturer.

Prerequisites before you try it
- Your device must support multitasking. Some budget devices or customized ROMs limit split screen.
- Apps must support split screen. Some banking apps, DRM video apps, and games may block multitasking.
- Android 13 features can be hidden by navigation settings. Gestures vs buttons can change how you access Recents and split options.
How to enable split screen in Android 13 (standard methods)
Try these in order. They cover the most common Android 13 entry points across devices.
Method 1: Recents app overview (drag-and-drop)
1) Open Recents (the screen that shows your recently used apps). On most Android 13 phones, this is done by swiping up and holding, or tapping the Recents button (if you use buttons navigation).
2) Find the first app you want on the top/left pane.
Recommended Free Tools
3) Long-press the app card, then look for a split option (often labeled Split screen or a similar phrase).
4) When prompted, pick the second app from the app list or the remaining pane area.
If you see a drag handle, you can also drag one app card to the split area (behavior differs slightly by skin).
Method 2: The Split screen option in Recents
This method is the most reliable when it appears.
1) Open Recents.
2) On the app card you want to use, tap Split screen (or the icon/text that indicates split view).
3) Choose the second app from the list.
Android then locks both apps into split-screen layout.

Method 3: Swipe gestures (if your launcher uses them)
Some OEM skins add gesture shortcuts for multi-window. The exact gesture varies (for example, certain phones support an on-screen “two rectangles” button or an edge gesture).
Check your device settings if you can’t find split screen in Recents:
- Open Settings.
- Search for split screen or multi window.
- Enable the option if it’s available.
On Pixel and many stock-style builds, Recents is still the primary way to start split view.
How to control split screen once it’s enabled
Once both apps are active, you’re not stuck with the initial layout. Android 13 lets you adjust and manage the panes.
Resize both apps
Look for the divider line between the panes. Drag it to give more space to one app. On many devices, you can resize even if the divider looks like a thin grab handle.
Switch the app in a split pane
You can replace one side with another app without exiting split screen.
- Long-press inside the pane you want to replace.
- Choose Replace, Swap, or the relevant split-screen option (wording varies by device).
- Select the new app from the picker.
Exit split screen
Most phones support one of these exits:
- Drag the divider all the way to one side until the other app closes.
- Open Recents again and exit from split view (some UIs show a “close split” control).
- Tap the divider menu icon (if present) and choose Exit or Close split screen.
Device-specific notes (Pixel, Samsung One UI, and others)
Android 13 is the same base OS, but manufacturers often change naming and where the split-screen controls live.
Pixel (stock Android 13)
On Pixel devices running stock Android 13, start with Recents and look for Split screen on app cards. If an app supports multitasking, Pixel typically shows the split option directly.

Samsung Galaxy (One UI on Android 13/14)
Samsung devices often call it Split screen and make it easy to trigger from app overview. Samsung also tends to support multi-window more widely across apps.
- Open Recents (tap the Recents button or swipe up and hold).
- Tap Split screen on one app card.
- Choose the second app.
If you’re using One UI with the built-in Multi window features, there may also be a dedicated multi-window entry in settings when you search “Multi window.”
OnePlus / OxygenOS
On OnePlus, split screen is typically launched from Recents. If your phone supports it, you’ll usually see a split option on the app card for compatible apps.
If the split option is missing, check whether you have a theme or “smart sidebar”/window manager feature enabled or disabled. Then test with a known compatible app like Settings or a browser.
Motorola (My UX)
Motorola devices often support split screen via Recents as well. If you don’t see the split card option, try using two different system apps (like Settings + Chrome) to confirm the feature works before testing other apps.
When split screen is missing: troubleshooting checklist
If you can’t find the split-screen option, work through this checklist. Most issues come down to app support, navigation mode, or device restrictions.

- Settings + Chrome
- Messages + Maps
- YouTube + a compatible browser tab (sometimes video apps behave differently)
If split works with one pair but not another, the second app is likely restricting multitasking.
Disable restrictions that block multitasking
Certain modes can limit multitasking. Search your Settings for terms like:
- Restriction
- App lock
- Do Not Disturb (less likely, but worth checking if behavior changes)
- Accessibility features related to overlays (can affect window behavior)
If a work profile or device policy is installed, the organization’s settings may also disable multi-window features.

Android 13 supports gesture navigation and button navigation. If your Recents access is different, split-screen entry can feel “missing.”
- Open Settings.
- Go to Gesture or Buttons (wording varies).
- Choose the mode that makes Recents easiest to open.
Then try again from Recents.
Restart UI components and the phone
When the UI fails to load properly, split-screen controls can disappear. Try:
- Restart the phone (quickest real fix).
- Close and reopen the Recents screen.
- If your device uses a “System UI” restart option in developer tools (rare for end users), use it only if you know what you’re doing.
Update system and apps
Split-screen features can be affected by app versions and Android security patches. Make sure:
- Android System WebView and Google Play services are up to date (if you use them).
- You updated the apps you’re trying to split (especially browsers and social apps).
Check updates in Settings > System updates and Play Store > Manage apps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes that prevent split screen
- Trying split with a non-compatible app. Test with Settings + Chrome first.
- Not opening Recents correctly. If you open the app drawer or notifications shade instead, you won’t see split options.
- Dragging to the wrong target. Some skins require dragging to the exact split area highlight.
- Accidentally exiting before the picker appears. Keep the finger down long enough for the split menu to load.
Alternatives if split screen won’t work
If your device or specific app won’t cooperate, you still have options depending on how you want to multitask.

Pop-up view (where supported)
Some Android builds support floating pop-up windows for compatible apps. Look for a Pop-up view option in Recents (alongside split screen if available).
This can be a better fallback for video, chat apps, or utilities that don’t like split view.
Screen pinning / full-screen limits
If you use screen pinning or certain full-screen-only policies, it can block multitasking UI. Check for:

Use a foldable/large-screen mode
On foldables, multitasking controls may look different. If you have a foldable device, check for tablet-like modes and window manager settings that can change how split view is presented.
FAQ: Split screen on Android 13
Why can’t I see the Split screen option in Recents?
Most often it’s either (1) the app doesn’t support split screen, (2) your device disables multitasking, or (3) your navigation mode is making Recents harder to access. Test with Settings + Chrome to isolate the cause.
Can I split two apps in landscape and portrait?
Usually yes. Android 13 supports split behavior in both orientations, but the exact layout and available controls can vary by device size and manufacturer UI.
Does split screen work with YouTube?
Sometimes. Video apps have app-specific rules and can restrict multitasking or change to a pop-up behavior instead of true split view. If split won’t work, try pop-up view or start playback in a compatible mode.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will split screen affect battery life?
Using two active apps increases background activity and can raise power usage. If you see unexpected battery drain, close the unused app pane and check which app is consuming power.
How do I share a link while in split screen?
Switch focus to the pane with your browser (tap inside the pane), open the share menu in that app, and choose your target app—Android will often keep the split layout while you send.
Bottom Line
On Android 13, split-screen multitasking is typically enabled from the Recents screen using the Split screen option or a drag-and-drop gesture. Once enabled, you can resize panes and exit by dragging the divider to the edge.
If the option is missing, don’t assume it’s your device—start by testing with compatible system apps like Settings and Chrome, then check navigation settings and any app or policy restrictions.
