Secure DNS in Microsoft Edge helps protect your DNS lookups by using DNS over HTTPS (DoH). When it’s enabled, your browser can reduce passive eavesdropping and make DNS requests harder to tamper with on untrusted networks.

This guide walks you through turning it on in Edge’s settings, choosing a provider, verifying behavior, and handling the common failure cases you’ll hit on real networks.

What Secure DNS Is and Why Edge Uses It

DNS translates names like example.com into IP addresses. Traditionally, those queries are sent in a form that’s visible to anyone monitoring your network path.

#1 Best Overall

Secure DNS in Edge uses DNS over HTTPS (DoH). Instead of plain DNS traffic, the browser sends DNS queries inside HTTPS requests to a DNS provider’s secure endpoint, improving privacy and integrity.

Prerequisites and Things to Check First

  • Update Microsoft Edge so the Secure DNS setting exists and behaves correctly. On Windows, check via Settings > About Microsoft Edge. On macOS, use Edge menu > About Microsoft Edge.
  • Know your DNS provider choice: Edge can use built-in options or a custom DoH server you specify.
  • Be aware of network edge cases: captive portals (hotel Wi‑Fi), strict corporate DNS policies, and content filters can break DoH in some environments.

If your organization manages Edge, your Secure DNS setting may be restricted by policy.

Enable Secure DNS in Microsoft Edge (Personal Device)

Use the steps below for your platform. Edge’s UI labels are close across devices, but the exact wording can vary slightly by version.

Windows and macOS (Edge desktop)

Turn Secure DNS on from Edge’s Privacy and services settings.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Privacy, search, and services.
  4. Scroll to the Security area (or use search in Settings).
  5. Find Secure DNS.
  6. Change the dropdown from Off to one of these (depending on what you see):
    • On (with a recommended provider), or
    • Choose a service provider / Secure DNS service, then select the provider.
  7. If you choose Custom, enter a DoH endpoint (example format): https://dns.example.com/dns-query, then save.
  8. Restart Edge if prompted (or close and reopen for consistent behavior).

Version note: On some builds, Secure DNS appears under Privacy, search, and services rather than under System and performance. If you can’t find it, use the Settings search box and type Secure DNS.

Android (Edge mobile)

Enable Secure DNS inside Edge’s in-app settings.

  1. Open the Microsoft Edge app.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu (or Settings from the bottom/side menu, depending on your build).
  3. Go to Settings.
  4. Tap Privacy and security (or a similar grouping).
  5. Find Secure DNS.
  6. Set it to On.
  7. Select a provider from the list, or choose Custom and enter the DoH URL.
  8. Return to the browser and test a few sites.

If your app build doesn’t show Secure DNS, confirm you’re on a recent Edge version and that the feature is available for your region/device.

iPhone and iPad (Edge mobile)

The iOS/iPadOS app follows a similar settings flow, but iOS restrictions can affect feature availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Microsoft Edge on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Settings (often via the three-dot menu).
  3. Go to Privacy and security.
  4. Find Secure DNS.
  5. Turn it On.
  6. Choose a provider or set Custom with your DoH endpoint.
  7. Test loading a few domains.

If Secure DNS is unavailable on your current iOS Edge build, you may need to update Edge or use a device-level DNS solution (managed by your organization or by iOS profiles).

Choose a Secure DNS Provider (Recommended Settings)

Edge needs a DoH endpoint. Many public providers publish a consistent URL path. When you pick a provider, Edge typically handles the endpoint for you, but custom setups require careful URL formatting.

Popular public providers

Here are common DoH endpoints you’ll see referenced for Secure DNS testing. Exact availability depends on provider policies and regions.

Cloudflare https://cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query Fast anycast and widely used public resolver
Google https://dns.google/resolve Broad infrastructure and public resolver service
Quad9 https://dns.quad9.net/dns-query Security-focused public DNS option

Custom URL gotcha: If you paste a DoH URL without the correct path (for example, you only paste a hostname), Edge will fail to connect and Secure DNS won’t work.

How to verify you’re using the intended DNS

Verification is important because network middleboxes or policy rules can silently override your intent.

  • Check Edge’s network activity: open Developer Tools (F12), then look for DoH HTTPS requests while loading a site.
  • Use provider indicators: some resolvers offer test pages or behavior that differs when DoH is used.
  • Compare results: query the same domain with your current network DNS and then after enabling Secure DNS (to confirm changes in resolution path or answers).

Enterprise Option: Enable Secure DNS via Policies

For managed fleets, you may need to enforce Secure DNS across many devices and users. Edge supports enterprise policy controls through group policy templates and related mechanisms.

Using Microsoft Edge group policy templates

Typical workflow:

  1. Obtain and install the latest Edge administrative templates (ADMX/ADML) for your Edge version from Microsoft’s policy documentation.
  2. Open Group Policy Management and navigate to your target GPO.
  3. Go to the Edge policy path for DNS/secure DNS settings.
  4. Enable the policy that controls Secure DNS.
  5. Set the policy value to either a provider selection or a custom DoH endpoint.
  6. Link the GPO to the target OU, then run gpupdate /force on a test machine.
  7. Verify on the endpoint by checking Edge Settings and confirming the toggle is enforced (often greyed out).

Policy naming varies by Edge release. If you’re setting this in production, confirm the exact policy name in the ADMX files you downloaded.

Registry-based alternative (advanced)

Some environments use direct registry writes when group policy templates aren’t feasible. If you go this route, use the official ADMX policy mapping to avoid guessing the key names.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find the policy name in the Edge ADMX files.
  2. Use that policy’s documented registry location and value type.
  3. Create the key/value in your gold image or via your configuration management tool.
  4. Test on a non-production device, then confirm the UI state and whether Secure DNS actually connects.

Be careful: registry changes can conflict with user profiles and other security baselines.

Troubleshooting When Secure DNS Fails

If Secure DNS doesn’t behave as expected, the fix is usually straightforward: check feature availability, confirm endpoint formatting, and rule out captive portals or policy blocks.

Secure DNS toggle is missing or greyed out

  • Feature not available in your Edge build: update Edge and retry.
  • Enterprise policy enforced: the toggle may be locked. Check your device’s policies or contact IT.
  • Unsupported platform behavior: some mobile builds may lag behind desktop features.

Websites won’t load after enabling

This usually means the DoH endpoint is unreachable from your network or blocked by a firewall/proxy.

  • Try switching providers (e.g., from custom to Cloudflare, or between Cloudflare and Google) to isolate provider-specific connectivity issues.
  • Confirm the URL path is correct (example: /dns-query or /resolve).
  • Temporarily set Secure DNS to Off to confirm the network isn’t fully broken.

If it works on one network but not another, you’re likely dealing with a network-level block or proxy rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNS still seems unchanged

  • Clear the DNS cache in the browser/OS as applicable, then reload. On Windows, you can also test after flushing OS DNS cache.
  • Ensure you restarted Edge after changing the Secure DNS setting.
  • Look at Edge’s network traces to confirm DoH requests are actually being made.

Some sites aggressively cache IPs via service workers or reuse connections; testing with a fresh incognito window can help.

Captive portals and login pages (hotels, airports)

Captive portals intercept traffic to force authentication. DoH can prevent the browser from reaching the portal the same way plain DNS would.

  • If you can’t reach the login page, temporarily disable Secure DNS on that network.
  • After authentication, re-enable Secure DNS.

Corporate networks and SSL inspection

Some enterprise proxies and security tools restrict outbound DNS-over-HTTPS or only allow specific destinations.

  • Ask IT which DoH providers/endpoints are allowed.
  • Use the corporate-approved Secure DNS policy rather than a random public endpoint.
  • If SSL inspection is enabled, ensure the DoH endpoint is trusted by the inspection flow—otherwise connections may fail.

Common errors you can look for

  • Connection failures: try a different provider endpoint.
  • Certificate errors: confirm you’re not using an incorrect custom URL and that the endpoint is valid.
  • Intermittent behavior: check whether switching networks changes the outcome.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Copying only the domain (missing the required DoH path). Always use the full endpoint URL Edge expects.
  • Assuming Secure DNS affects everything: it specifically changes how Edge performs DNS resolution, not how HTTPS connections are secured.
  • Skipping restarts: after changing settings, reload or restart Edge to avoid stale behavior.
  • Testing on the wrong network: verify on both trusted and “problem” networks (home Wi‑Fi vs. public Wi‑Fi) before declaring success.

FAQ: Secure DNS in Microsoft Edge

Does enabling Secure DNS make browsing fully anonymous?

Can I use my own DNS provider with Secure DNS?

Yes, if your provider offers a DoH endpoint. In Edge, choose the Custom Secure DNS option and paste the full DoH URL (including path).

Will Secure DNS break my VPN?

Usually it won’t. But if your VPN forces traffic through a DNS policy or blocks outbound DoH, you may need to adjust provider settings or disable Secure DNS temporarily.

Is Secure DNS the same as encrypted DNS on the device?

They’re related but not identical. Device-level encrypted DNS settings may differ from browser-level Secure DNS. This guide covers Edge’s browser behavior specifically.

Why does the Secure DNS option disappear after updates?

Occasionally Edge changes the settings layout or requires a newer version for the toggle to appear. Updating Edge and checking Settings search for “Secure DNS” typically resolves it.
