Windows 11 already has screenshot tools built in, so you do not need to install an app. For the quickest capture, press Windows+Shift+S, choose a capture mode, select the area, and then use the Snipping Tool notification to annotate, copy, save, or share the image. For a complete screen saved automatically, press Windows+PrtScn; the file goes to PicturesScreenshots.

Capture part of the screen with Snipping Tool
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The screen dims and the capture overlay appears.
- Choose one of the available modes: Rectangular, Freeform, Window, or Full-screen.
- For rectangular mode, drag around the exact area you want. For freeform mode, draw an outline around it. Window and full-screen modes capture immediately after you choose the target.
- Select the notification that appears after the capture. It opens the image in Snipping Tool.
- Use Snipping Tool to annotate with a pen or highlighter, add shapes, crop, extract text, copy, save, or share.
If the notification disappears, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its capture history or start a new snip. Save the image from the editor when you need a file rather than a clipboard copy.
Rectangular capture
Use this for a clean, predictable crop such as a dialog box, chart, or portion of a webpage. Begin the drag just outside the first corner and release at the opposite corner. The selected pixels are placed in the Snipping Tool workflow and on the clipboard.
Freeform capture
Freeform is useful when a rectangle would include unrelated material. Trace around the object or region; the resulting snip follows the shape you drew.

Window capture
Choose Window, then select the application window. This is an alternative to Alt+Print Screen when you want to select a visible window through the overlay instead of copying immediately.
Full-screen capture from the overlay
Select Full-screen in the Windows+Shift+S overlay when you want the Snipping Tool editor and its annotation options, but do not need the automatic file behavior of Windows+PrtScn.
Save a full-screen screenshot automatically
- Press Windows+PrtScn.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures, then open Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move, or share the image like any other file.
This method is the simplest choice when you want a file immediately and do not need to select an area or annotate first.
Copy a screenshot to the clipboard
Entire screen
- Press PrtScn.
- Open the destination application, such as Paint, an email, a document, or a chat window.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the image.
PrtScn copies the whole screen; it does not, by itself, create a file in the Screenshots folder. To retain the image, paste it into an app and save it there.

Active window only
- Click the window you want so it has focus.
- Press Alt+Print Screen.
- Switch to Paint, a document, email, or another destination and press Ctrl+V.
- Save the pasted image if you need a file.
Only the focused window is copied. If you prefer to choose from several visible windows and then annotate, use the Window mode in Snipping Tool instead.
What Snipping Tool can do after capture
Snipping Tool is more than a keyboard trigger. For still images, it supports:
- Pen and highlighter marks for explanations or emphasis.
- Shapes for callouts and diagrams.
- Cropping to remove unwanted edges.
- Text extraction when you need words from the captured image.
- Copying, saving, and sharing from the editor.
Windows 11 also includes video snips. Press Windows+Shift+R, select a region, and start a recording. This is separate from a still screenshot and is useful when a static image cannot show the sequence you need.
What to do when your keyboard has no Print Screen key
Use the software shortcut
Windows+Shift+S does not require a dedicated Print Screen key. It opens the same capture overlay, where you can select a region, window, or full screen.

Try the hardware alternative
On some keyboards, Microsoft lists Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar as an alternative. Key labeling and behavior vary by hardware, so try the combination once and then check whether the capture appears in Snipping Tool or on the clipboard.
Compact and laptop keyboards
Some laptops place Print Screen on another key or require holding Fn. If you cannot identify it, use Windows+Shift+S rather than guessing a vendor-specific combination.
Fix common screenshot problems
Nothing appears after Windows+Shift+S
- Press the keys together again and wait for the dimmed overlay.
- If the overlay opens but no editor appears, look for the notification and select it.
- If you only need the pixels, try pasting with Ctrl+V; the capture is copied to the clipboard.
Windows+PrtScn did not create a file
- Check PicturesScreenshots, not the Desktop or Downloads folder.
- Use Windows+Shift+S and save from Snipping Tool if you need to choose a different location.
- On a laptop, try the keyboard’s Fn modifier or use the software shortcut.
PrtScn pasted the wrong thing
PrtScn captures the entire screen. For one application, focus that window first and use Alt+Print Screen. For a custom area, use Windows+Shift+S and select Rectangular or Freeform.

Window capture depends on what is visible and selectable at the moment you open the overlay. Bring the intended window forward, press Windows+Shift+S again, and choose Window. Alternatively, focus it and use Alt+Print Screen.

The capture needs explanation or redaction
Open the image in Snipping Tool from the notification, then use annotation tools, shapes, cropping, or text extraction before saving or sharing.
