To turn on RCS on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, open Google Messages, tap your profile icon, then go to Messages settings > RCS chats and switch on RCS chats. Wait for phone-number verification, then check that the status says Connected. The exact availability can depend on your carrier, region, and messaging app.

Tap Messages settings, then RCS chats. If your app shows an older menu label, look for Chat features.

Switch on RCS chats and allow Google Messages to verify your phone number.

Return to the RCS chats screen and check the status. Connected indicates setup is complete. Follow Google’s RCS setup instructions if the controls or status differ.

Google says that with RCS enabled, you can send messages over Wi-Fi and use other RCS features. Avoid repeatedly switching RCS off and on: Google warns that doing so can remove you from group chats. Turning it off is intended for specific situations such as changing devices or messaging apps, or losing access to the phone while keeping the number.

Google Messages and Samsung Messages use different RCS controls
Check which app you are using before following instructions. The steps above apply to Google Messages, where the setting is called RCS chats or, in some app versions, Chat features. Google’s support page confirms that Google Messages offers RCS on Samsung phones: Google Messages on Samsung devices.

Samsung Messages has separate controls, and its RCS availability depends on carrier support. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says Google Messages is the default texting app for RCS support across carriers in the United States; that guidance does not guarantee identical availability in other countries, on every plan, or with every device configuration. AT&T also provides a Galaxy S22 Ultra guide to adjusting RCS chat settings; that carrier-specific route should not be assumed to match other carriers.
What to do if RCS will not connect
Use the status shown under Messages settings > RCS chats as a diagnostic clue. A status does not, by itself, mean the phone is defective.

Not supported: RCS is unavailable in the current setup. Google recommends checking the internet connection; if the app identifies carrier support as the issue, contact your carrier.

Carrier disabled RCS: Contact the carrier. After it resolves the issue, return to the RCS chats screen and tap Retry if that option appears.
Google’s troubleshooting checklist is to make Google Messages the default SMS app, confirm the phone has internet access and can receive SMS, and update Google Messages, Google Play services, and Android. Google’s stated minimum for RCS chats is Android 5.0. If phone-number verification remains unresolved for more than 30 minutes, Google directs users to open Details on the RCS screen and submit feedback. See Google’s RCS troubleshooting steps.

What happens when RCS is unavailable?
RCS availability varies by carrier and region. For an RCS conversation, the other person must also have RCS enabled; in a group conversation, every member needs RCS enabled. In Google Messages, messages can still be sent as SMS or MMS when RCS is unavailable. You can choose whether Google Messages automatically resends messages as text in the RCS chats settings.
