Hytale player-versus-player combat is configured per world. The quickest option is to run /world config pvp true as an operator while the target world is loaded. To make the setting persistent without relying on an in-game command, stop the server, edit that world’s config.json, set its PvP value to true, validate the JSON, and restart.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Hytale servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The exact file key differs between community server builds and guides. Use the key and nesting already present in your own world file rather than inserting a second, guessed setting. The procedures below are based on community host documentation and can change as Hytale server versions evolve.

Have console or file-manager access to the server, and identify the world in which players actually spawn. PvP is not a single global switch: each world has its own setting. Enabling it in one world does not automatically enable it in another.
- Operator access: the command method requires an account with permission to run world-configuration commands. Community guides describe this as OP status.
- The correct world name: use the world currently hosting your players, not merely the first folder you see in the server directory.
- A backup: copy the world’s configuration file before editing it. Keep the original outside the active world folder so it is easy to restore.
- A maintenance window: file changes should be made while the server is stopped. A running server may overwrite your edit, ignore it, or leave a partially written save if it shuts down during the change.
If you are unsure which world is active, check the server’s world list or the world name shown when players connect. For a multi-world setup, write down every world that should have PvP and configure them individually.

Method 1: enable PvP with the in-game command
The command is the fastest way to change a world and does not require editing JSON or restarting the process.
Run the command in the active world
- Join the server or open its console with an account that has operator privileges.
- Make sure the command is being issued for the world where you want combat enabled.
- Run
/world config pvp true. - Have players leave and re-enter the affected world, then test combat with two consenting accounts.
The command changes the setting for the selected world. It does not edit every world on the server, and it does not necessarily change a world that is not currently selected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTarget a named world on a multi-world server
One community host guide documents an explicit world option:
/world config pvp true --world=your_world_name
Replace your_world_name with the world folder or configured world name used by your server. Keep the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation exact. If your build rejects the --world form, switch to that world first and run the shorter command, or consult the command syntax supplied with your server version; command arguments can change between releases.
If the command is rejected
- “Unknown command” or syntax error: confirm that you included the leading slash when using chat, and check whether the server expects the command in its console without a slash.
- Permission denied: grant the account operator rights through your server’s normal administration system, then reconnect or reopen the console session before trying again.
- The command succeeds but players cannot fight: verify that both players are in the same world and that you did not enable PvP in a lobby, staging, or test world instead of the gameplay world.
- The setting disappears after a restart: use the file method below and inspect the world’s saved configuration. A command may be temporary on a particular build, or another startup process may be restoring an older file.
Method 2: enable PvP permanently in the world configuration
Use this method for offline setup, scripted deployments, or a server where you want the setting to survive restarts. The file belongs to the world, not to the server-wide configuration.
1. Stop the server cleanly
Send the normal shutdown command from the console and wait until the process reports that it has stopped. Do not edit while the server is still writing world data. If the host provides a Stop button, wait for its status to change fully to stopped before opening the file.

2. Open the correct world file
The commonly documented path for the default world is:
universe/worlds/default/config.json
If the world was renamed, replace default with that world’s directory name. Do not confuse this file with the server-root config.json. The root file contains server-wide options such as the server name, password, and player limit; changing it does not turn PvP on for a world.
3. Make a backup before editing
Copy the existing world config.json to a separate backup location and give it a date-based name. A backup lets you restore the previous state if the server refuses to start or the setting behaves unexpectedly. Avoid keeping a second file named config.json in the active directory, because the server may not know which file to read.
4. Find the PvP property already used by your file
Community guides show several layouts. The most frequently reported form is a top-level IsPvpEnabled property, often alongside another world setting such as IsFallDamageEnabled:
{
"IsPvpEnabled": true,
"IsFallDamageEnabled": true
}
Other guides place the value under a gameplay configuration entry, for example:
{
"GameplayConfig": "Default"
}
Additional community examples report a nested object or a lower-case property:

{
"WorldConfig": {
"PvP": true
}
}
{
"pvp": true
}
These variants are not an official, verified schema. They reflect differences between guides, server builds, or generated files. Treat the structure already in your file as authoritative: if it contains IsPvpEnabled, change that value; if it contains a WorldConfig object with a PvP member, change that member. Do not add all variants, and do not create a new nesting level simply because a different example used it.
5. Change only the value
Set the existing PvP boolean to the JSON value true, without quotation marks. Preserve commas, braces, indentation, and every unrelated setting. A boolean written as "true" is a text string, not a JSON boolean, and may be ignored.

6. Validate the JSON
Before saving, check that every opening brace and quotation mark has a matching closing character, that property names are in double quotes, and that adjacent properties are separated by commas. Use a JSON validator available in your editor or hosting panel. Remove comments if you added any; standard JSON does not permit them.
7. Save, restart, and test
- Save the file in UTF-8 or the editor’s normal JSON format.
- Start the server and watch for configuration or parse errors.
- Join the specific world whose file you edited.
- Test player damage with willing participants, then stop the server and reopen the file to confirm the value remains
true.
If startup fails after the edit, stop the process, restore the backup, and start again. Once the server is stable, repeat the change carefully using the key layout that the file already uses.
Command or file edit: which should you use?
| Consideration | In-game command | World config file |
|---|---|---|
| Example | /world config pvp true |
Edit universe/worlds/<world>/config.json |
| Server restart | Not required for the command itself | Stop before editing and restart afterward |
| Access needed | Operator or equivalent command permission | File-manager, FTP, container, or host-panel access |
| Best use | Quick live change or temporary event | Repeatable setup and a setting that must survive restarts |
| Main risk | Changing the wrong currently selected world | Invalid JSON or editing the wrong configuration file |
| Multi-world handling | Run once per world, using the world selector or --world option where supported |
Edit each world’s own configuration file |
A practical workflow is to use the command to confirm that PvP works in the intended world, then make the corresponding saved change in that world’s file during a maintenance stop if you need persistence.
Configuring several worlds without surprises
Because the setting is per world, a server with a lobby, survival world, arena, and event world can have different PvP states. Decide the intended state for each world before making changes.

- List the world names and match each name to its directory under
universe/worlds. - For a live change, select one world at a time and run the command, or use
/world config pvp true --world=your_world_namewhere that syntax is accepted. - For persistent setup, stop the server and edit each world’s own
config.json; never copy a complete file over another world without checking world-specific settings. - Start the server and test entry into every affected world. A correct setting in an arena does not imply that PvP is enabled in the survival world.
If players report inconsistent behavior, ask which world they were in when the test occurred. “PvP works for some players” can simply mean they are entering worlds with different configuration values.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to verify that PvP is really enabled
Verification should test the world setting rather than relying on a successful command response alone.
- Place both test players in the same named world.
- Use accounts that are allowed to damage one another; administrative privileges or another protection system may prevent a meaningful test.
- Try a controlled hit and stop immediately after confirming the result.
- Repeat after leaving and re-entering the world.
- If you used a file edit, restart the server once more and test again so you know the setting survives a normal restart.
- For multi-world servers, repeat the check in every world whose PvP state matters.
Keep a short record of each world’s intended state. This prevents a later administrator from treating a lobby’s disabled PvP setting as evidence that the arena configuration is broken.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The command works, but no damage occurs
First check the world. The command may have applied to the world in which the administrator was standing, while the test players are elsewhere. If the world is correct, confirm that both players are present in it and that no separate protection, minigame, or permission system is preventing combat. The PvP world flag only addresses the world’s PvP setting; it cannot override unrelated gameplay controls.
PvP works until the server restarts
Inspect the affected world’s config.json after shutdown. If its PvP value is still false, use the file method to set the existing property to true. Also check that you edited the world file rather than the root server configuration. On a multi-world server, confirm that the startup script is not selecting a different world directory than the one you changed.
The server will not start after editing
Restore the backup first so the server can boot, then validate the edited file outside the server. Typical causes are a missing comma, an extra comma before a closing brace, mismatched quotation marks, or a text value such as "true" where a boolean is expected. Reapply only the smallest necessary change and keep the original formatting.
Best Value
You cannot find an obvious PvP key
Do not paste every key variant from an online example into the file. Search the entire world file for terms such as pvp, PvP, or IsPvpEnabled, and inspect nearby objects for the existing gameplay structure. If no related property exists, the build may generate or accept the setting through the command instead. In that case, use the command, restart, and inspect the regenerated file before making further edits. Because community documentation does not establish one universal schema, avoid assuming that a missing key belongs at the top level.
The file change appears to be ignored
Confirm that the server was fully stopped before the edit and that the file was saved to the active world directory. Check for duplicate world folders, a renamed world, or a hosting panel that mounts a different server directory than the one displayed in its file browser. After restarting, reopen the same file and verify that your value is still present.
Only one world changed
That is expected when you edit one world file or run the command without a world selector. Configure the other worlds individually and document which ones intentionally keep PvP disabled.
Keeping a PvP change manageable
Before enabling combat on a shared server, announce the affected world and the time of the change so players are not surprised. Maintain a backup of each world configuration before scheduled events, and record whether the change was made by command or file edit. If you run temporary PvP events, use the command for the event and then set the value back deliberately afterward; do not assume a restart will restore the previous state.
When handing the server to another administrator, document the exact world names, the key path used in each file, and the server version at the time of the change. This is especially important while Hytale server configuration formats are still changing and community guides show different key layouts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What may change in future Hytale updates
No single official configuration schema was identified for these procedures. Community host guides currently report the command form and several JSON layouts, but a game update may rename a command argument, move a property, or regenerate the file differently. After an update, compare a newly generated world file with your backup, check whether the command still accepts the same syntax, and test one non-critical world before applying the change everywhere.
The durable rule is to configure the world players actually use, preserve the file’s existing structure, and verify the result after a clean restart. Those checks protect you from the two most common errors: changing the server-wide file instead of the world file, and changing a different world than the one being tested.
