The built-in switch is deliberately broad: it marks the server as PvE, but it does not provide a detailed rule editor for raiding, container access, or separate PvP and PvE areas.

What Rust’s built-in PvE setting does
server.pve is a server console variable (convar) that enables the server’s built-in PvE mode. When it is enabled, the server browser’s PvE tag is applied automatically. You do not need to add a separate PvE value to server.tags.

The setting is an all-or-nothing control rather than a rules engine. The available documentation does not establish every combat interaction it changes, and third-party guides disagree about some details. In particular, do not assume that the one-line setting gives you independent controls for raiding, access to another player’s containers, or mixed PvP/PvE zones. If those distinctions matter to your community, use a rules plugin instead of relying on the built-in switch alone.
What you need before changing the server
- Administrative access to the Rust server or its hosting control panel.
- Permission to edit the server’s configuration and restart the instance.
- Console access after the restart so you can confirm the active value.
- A maintenance window, because the configuration change takes effect after a restart.
Back up the current configuration before editing it. Host layouts differ, so the exact path shown in one provider’s panel may not match your server. On hosted servers, the file is commonly inside a cfg folder under the server identity directory, but that location is not universal.

Enable PvE by editing server.cfg
1. Find the active configuration file
Open the file manager or configuration editor provided by your host and locate the server.cfg file belonging to the server identity you actually start. Some hosts create this file automatically; others leave it absent on a fresh installation. If there is no file, use the host’s New file action to create one named exactly server.cfg.
Do not edit an example file, a template, or a configuration belonging to a different server identity. If your host offers a dedicated Server Config panel, that panel may be writing the file for you; use the panel’s active configuration rather than maintaining two competing copies.
2. Add the convar
Add this line on its own:
server.pve true
The convar name is server.pve. A similarly named value, server.pvemode, appears in at least one guide, but it is not the name used by the Facepunch server-browser documentation and the hosting instructions summarized here. Use the documented spelling above.
If your provider displays a commented PvE option instead of a blank text file, uncomment the provider’s PvE line and set it to true. Do not add the setting to server.tags; the PvE browser tag is generated by the PvE convar.

3. Save and restart the server
Save the configuration, then perform a full server restart from the host panel or your normal service-management method. A live process will not reliably pick up a file edit until it has restarted. Warn connected players first if the server is public, because the restart disconnects everyone and may interrupt active gameplay.
4. Verify the running value
After the server has finished starting, open its console and enter:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
server.pve
The console should return true. This checks the value loaded by the running process rather than merely confirming that a file was saved. If it returns false, or the command is not recognized, stop and correct the active configuration before judging the gameplay result.
Using a hosting control panel instead of a file editor
Some managed hosts expose a Server Config page with a commented line labelled “PvE Mode.” In that interface, enable the line, set the value to true, apply the change, and restart the server. The labels and save buttons vary by provider, so follow the panel’s own apply or restart workflow.

Once the server is back online, still run server.pve in the console. A green toggle in a web panel is not a substitute for checking the value loaded by the game server. If the panel reverts the line after a restart, its generated configuration is authoritative; contact the host or use the panel’s supported setting rather than repeatedly editing a file that the panel overwrites.
Confirm the server’s public PvE status
With server.pve returning true, check the server in Rust’s browser. The built-in PvE setting applies the PvE browser tag automatically. Seeing the tag is a useful public-facing confirmation, but the console check remains the primary test because browser listings can take time to refresh and may be cached.

- The host did not restore an older configuration during startup.
- You are looking at the current listing rather than a cached entry.
The official server-browser documentation explains that server.tags accepts comma-separated tags, but a separate manual PvE tag is not required when server.pve is enabled.

Limits of the built-in mode
It is not a per-action rules editor
The one-line setting is suitable when you want a broad PvE server identity and do not need to define individual damage relationships. It does not expose a documented matrix for deciding which entity may damage which other entity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Raiding rules need separate validation
Do not promise players that enabling the convar automatically creates the exact raiding policy you have in mind. The available official pages do not document the complete combat behavior of server.pve, and third-party guides disagree about some interactions. If your rules prohibit, permit, or restrict raiding, test the behavior on a private instance and communicate the result clearly. Where the built-in behavior is not sufficient, use a plugin that lets you state the rule explicitly.
Mixed PvP and PvE areas are not provided by the switch alone
The built-in convar is coarse. It is not documented as a tool for making one monument, zone, or event PvP while the rest of the map remains PvE. A mixed ruleset requires a separate rules system and its own testing.
Container and ownership interactions are not independently configurable
Access to another player’s containers and similar ownership cases are among the areas for which the built-in setting does not provide fine-grained controls. Treat those interactions as an explicit policy question, not as an assumption that follows from the browser tag.
Best Value
When to use TruePVE instead
Hosting guides commonly recommend the TruePVE plugin when an operator needs to define exactly what can damage what. TruePVE runs through a modded server build such as Oxide or Carbon, rather than through the unmodified server alone.
What a plugin setup involves
- Confirm that your host allows an Oxide or Carbon server build. Some managed hosts do not permit changing the server build.
- Install or select the supported Oxide/Carbon build using the host’s documented process.
- Upload the TruePVE plugin to the appropriate
oxide/pluginsfolder. - Restart the server and inspect the plugin’s generated configuration and console messages.
- Define and test the damage rules you want before advertising the server as PvE or mixed-mode.
The exact plugin configuration is outside the built-in convar’s scope. Read the version of the plugin documentation that matches your installed Oxide or Carbon build, because Rust updates and mod frameworks can change compatibility.
Built-in PvE versus TruePVE
| Consideration | server.pve true |
TruePVE on Oxide or Carbon |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | One configuration line followed by a restart. | Requires a supported modded server build, plugin upload, restart, and rule configuration. |
| Rule control | Broad, all-or-nothing PvE setting; fine-grained behavior is not documented. | Designed for per-damage rules that specify what may damage what. |
| Mixed PvP/PvE zones | Not supplied as a documented feature of the convar. | Possible only to the extent supported by the plugin’s rules and your chosen build; test before launch. |
| Host requirements | Works through the normal server configuration when the host exposes the convar. | Your host must allow Oxide or Carbon and plugin files. |
| Maintenance | Minimal, but behavior should be rechecked after Rust updates. | Requires compatibility checks for Rust, the mod framework, and the plugin. |
Troubleshooting
The console returns false
- Check that the line is exactly
server.pve true, with no typo in the convar name. - Confirm that you edited the configuration for the server identity currently running.
- Save the file through the host interface and perform a complete restart.
- If a control panel regenerates the file, set the value in that panel instead.
The command is unknown or has no effect
Rust convars and their behavior can change with updates. Verify the current convar name against the current Facepunch server documentation and your host’s Rust version. Do not substitute server.pvemode simply because a third-party page uses that spelling.
The browser does not show PvE
First confirm that the running console reports true. Then allow time for the listing to refresh and make sure you are viewing the same server identity you restarted. Do not add a second manual tag unless you have a separate reason to manage custom tags; the built-in PvE tag is automatic.
Players report interactions that do not match your rules
Separate a configuration problem from a limitation of the built-in mode. Recheck the console value, reproduce the interaction on a test server, and document what actually happens. If you need explicit controls over raiding, container access, damage targets, or zones, move to a supported TruePVE setup rather than stacking undocumented convars.

Operational checklist
- Back up the current server configuration.
- Edit the active
server.cfg, or use the host’s PvE setting in its Server Config panel. - Set
server.pve true. - Save and restart the server.
- Run
server.pvein the live console and confirmtrue. - Check that the server browser applies the PvE tag.
- Test any raiding, ownership, or zone policy you intend to advertise.
- If the built-in behavior is too broad, verify host support for Oxide or Carbon and configure TruePVE.
- Recheck the convar and plugin compatibility after Rust updates, because names and behavior are subject to change.
Choosing the right approach
Use the built-in convar when your goal is simply to identify the server as PvE and a broad ruleset is acceptable. Choose TruePVE when your community needs enforceable exceptions, separate damage relationships, or a mixed map. In either case, publish the rules players will actually experience, not assumptions based only on the server-browser label.
