What Power On & Power Off sounds are (and when you’ll hear them)
When enabled, iPhone plays a short sound when you power the device on or when the shutdown completes. In most cases, the sound uses your iPhone’s speaker output and respects your volume controls.

These sounds are separate from your ringtone/alert volumes and from other haptics or notification sounds. Practically, think of them as system event audio for startup and shutdown.

Prerequisites on iPhone 14
Before you go hunting for the switch, confirm your iPhone can actually display it.
| Requirement | What to check |
|---|---|
| iPhone model | Works on iPhone 14 series (including iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max) |
| iOS version | Check your iOS version in Settings > General > About. If you’re on an older build, update first. |
| Region/support | If the option is not present, it may be tied to iOS rollout and availability in your region. |
| Basic audio output | Make sure your iPhone isn’t muted and that the speaker can play sound. |
How to check your iOS version: Open Settings > General > About and look at iOS Version.
If you’re unsure whether you’re up to date, use Settings > General > Software Update and install any available update.
Enable Power On & Power Off sounds in Settings
On iPhone 14, this is controlled through the Sounds settings.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Find the section labeled Power On & Power Off (or similarly named system sound setting).
- Turn Power On & Power Off Sounds On.
If you don’t see the Power On & Power Off line in Sounds & Haptics, skip to the troubleshooting sections below to identify whether your iOS version or configuration is the cause.
How to confirm it’s working
There’s no “test sound” button for power events, so confirmation means restarting or shutting down.
- Set your volume to a comfortable level (you can use the physical volume buttons on the side).
- Disable any “Silent” behavior you suspect is blocking output (for example, ensure the iPhone isn’t in silent mode).
- Power off your iPhone using: Settings > General > Shut Down and confirm.
- Wait for the full shutdown, then power back on by holding the side button until you see the Apple logo.
When the feature is enabled and audio output is available, you should hear the short startup chime and the shutdown sound (timing can vary slightly depending on whether you use physical buttons vs. the Settings shutdown flow).

Common reasons the Power toggle is missing
If you followed the path and can’t find Power On & Power Off, these are the usual causes.
Your iOS version doesn’t include the setting
Apple adds these toggles via iOS releases. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available update for your device.
The feature isn’t available in your region
Some system features roll out gradually by country/region. If your iPhone is up to date and the setting still isn’t present, the region rollout may be the blocker.
You’re searching in the wrong place
It’s specifically tied to the sound system category. Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics, not just Sounds or Notifications.

A configuration or accessibility mode is interfering
Accessibility settings can change audio behavior. While they usually don’t remove the toggle entirely, they can affect what you hear during system events.
Troubleshooting when the sound doesn’t play
You may have the toggle enabled but still hear nothing. Here’s a reliable troubleshooting sequence.
1) Check silent mode and output route
Confirm your iPhone isn’t in silent mode and that the speaker isn’t being overridden by audio output routing.

- Unmute the device if needed.
- Disconnect Bluetooth devices (Settings > Bluetooth) and try again.
- Open Control Center and verify the output device (audio routing icon) if you use it.
2) Verify speaker functionality
Before blaming the power sound feature, test audio output.
- Play a YouTube video (open YouTube and press play) and listen for sound.
- Call a friend or record a voice memo to confirm the speaker and microphone behavior.
3) Restart your iPhone (after confirming the toggle stays on)
Sometimes system sound settings don’t apply immediately. Toggle the setting off and back on, then restart normally.
4) Turn off Focus/Do Not Disturb only if it seems to be affecting system audio
Most Focus modes shouldn’t silence system event chimes, but if you’re in a strict configuration, test with Focus disabled.
- Go to Settings > Focus and temporarily disable the active profile.
5) Update iOS again if the behavior is new
If the option existed before and stopped working after an update, check Software Update for follow-up patches.
6) Reset all settings (last resort)
If power sound is enabled but audio behavior is inconsistent, resetting settings can correct a misconfiguration without deleting your data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Select Reset All Settings.
After the reset, re-check Settings > Sounds & Haptics and confirm the power sound toggle is still enabled.
Settings interactions you should know
Power On/Off sounds are system audio, but real-world behavior depends on multiple settings and situations.

Volume level
If your volume is extremely low, the power chime may be hard to notice. Increase the volume and run the startup/shutdown test again.
Bluetooth accessories
If you’re paired to AirPods or another Bluetooth speaker, the shutdown/startup sound can route to that device. Disconnect or turn off Bluetooth, then test again.

Settings like Mono Audio, Hearing-related options, or sound routing changes can alter what you hear. If you use accessibility features, confirm they’re not actively changing output routing.
Headphones and ports
If you use a wired headset or there’s debris in the Lightning/USB-C port (depending on iPhone model), audio routing can behave unexpectedly. Try removing accessories and testing again.

If the setting is missing or power sounds can’t be enabled on your device, your best alternatives depend on what you want from the behavior.
Use a system announcement instead of power chimes
For audible cues, you can rely on accessibility announcements or other system feedback tools (depending on what iOS offers in your region). This won’t recreate the exact power chime, but it can provide an audio confirmation.

FAQs
I updated iOS but still don’t see Power On & Power Off Sounds—what should I do?
First, confirm you checked Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Then verify your iOS version in Settings > General > About and check Software Update for additional updates. If it’s still missing, it may be a region rollout issue.
Will the sound play if my iPhone is in Silent mode?
Silent mode and routing can affect what you hear. For testing, unmute the iPhone, set a normal volume, and disconnect Bluetooth devices before you power-cycle the phone.

Why do I hear the startup sound but not the shutdown sound (or vice versa)?
Audio routing changes (Bluetooth devices switching, headphones reconnecting) are the most common cause. Test with Bluetooth off and volume clearly audible, then repeat the shutdown and startup.
Does this feature work with AirPods or a Bluetooth speaker?
Usually, system sounds follow your current audio output route. If you want to hear the chime through the iPhone’s speaker, disconnect Bluetooth (Settings > Bluetooth) and test again.
Bottom Line
To enable Power On & Power Off sounds on iPhone 14, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and turn on the Power On & Power Off Sounds option. If the toggle isn’t there, update iOS and consider region rollout as the most likely reason.
If the toggle is enabled but you still don’t hear anything, check silent mode, audio routing (Bluetooth), and speaker output with a quick audio test—then use Reset All Settings only if you’ve exhausted the basics.
