There is no single parental-control switch that blocks every live stream. Set controls separately on each service your child uses, distinguish watching from broadcasting, and add console-level limits for accounts used on PlayStation. These settings can reduce exposure, unwanted contact, and unsupervised broadcasting, but they do not guarantee that every live stream will be filtered or blocked.
Start by deciding what you need to restrict
“Restrict live streams” can mean several different things: stopping a child from broadcasting, limiting which live content appears, preventing chat or direct messages, or restricting access through a console. Those controls are not interchangeable. A platform may let a parent limit a teen’s ability to go live without blocking the streams they watch; a chat restriction may limit contact without changing what content the child can view.

For each service and device, decide which of these permissions the child should have:

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Watch: Can the child view live content, and are age or content settings available to narrow what is recommended or accessible?
- Broadcast or participate: Can the child start a stream, appear in someone else’s stream, or use an adult-owned account to participate?
- Interact: Can the child use chat, direct messages, or other communication features?
- Use the app or device: Can the child open the service on a console, use its browser, or spend money through the account?
Apply the service’s own family or communication controls first. Where the child uses a console, add that console’s account controls as another layer. A device-level restriction may govern access to a game, browser, or app, but it should not be treated as proof that every live stream inside a third-party service is filtered.

Prepare before changing settings
- List the services and devices actually in use. Include shared consoles, phones, tablets, browsers, and any secondary accounts. A setting on one account does not automatically cover a different account or device.
- Check the child’s age and account type. Keep profile information accurate, and confirm whether the service offers parent supervision for that age or account. Rules and features can differ by age, region, and account type.
- Link a parent account where supported. Twitch and Roblox describe parent-managed controls connected to a child or teen account. Follow the current in-app prompts rather than relying on an old menu path.
- Set content and contact permissions separately. Review age or discovery settings, then separately review chat, direct messages, and contact permissions.
- Make a separate decision about broadcasting. Decide whether the child may start a stream, participate in one, or only watch, and check the service’s current age rules.
- Test the settings on the child’s account. Verify what the child can see and do, and revisit the controls after service updates or account changes.
Twitch: use Family Center to manage a teen account
Twitch describes its service as intended for people aged 13 and up. People below the age of majority where they live may use it only under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian. A parent creates a Twitch account, the teen requests to link accounts, and the parent can then manage settings through Family Center. Follow the current in-app labels, since menu names and locations can change. Twitch’s Guide for Parents & Educators describes the available family tools.
Set controls for viewing, contact, and time
Family Center lets a parent set daily screen time, manage discovery using Content Classification Labels, and disable Whispers, Twitch’s direct-message feature. These controls address different risks: classification labels affect discovery, while disabling Whispers limits one route for private contact. The labels are not described as a guarantee that all unsuitable live content will be blocked.
Twitch also offers weekly activity summaries. These can include channels watched, people messaged, blocked users, money spent, and daily stream or watch time. Use the summary to guide a conversation about activity; it is not a substitute for configuring the account’s permissions.
Restrict the teen’s own broadcasts
Family Center can restrict a teen’s ability to go live. This is a control over the teen’s own broadcasting, not a setting that blocks the teen from watching other people’s live streams. If your concern is both broadcasting and viewing, configure the broadcast permission and the discovery and communication settings as separate decisions.

YouTube: distinguish watching from appearing in a stream
YouTube’s cited live-streaming policy is about participation, not a general parental block on live content. Its help page says that a person under 16 who participates in a live stream from an adult-owned account must have the adult visibly present. A delegated adult can start a stream from Live Control Room and must be visibly present and participate. See YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-streaming restrictions for the current policy details.
If your child is participating in a stream
Check whose account owns the channel and who will appear on camera. For a participant under 16 using an adult-owned account, the adult must be visibly present in the stream. YouTube also recommends managing privacy and embed settings, having an adult nearby or aware, and moderating live chat. A trusted adult can be designated as a moderator.
If your concern is what your child watches
The cited live-streaming policy does not establish a parent-facing switch that blocks all YouTube live streams from being watched. Do not confuse restrictions on who may run or participate in a stream with viewing controls. Review the parental controls available for the child’s account and device separately, and understand their scope before relying on them to limit live content.
Instagram and Facebook: account for regional teen protections
Meta’s August 26, 2026 announcement, updated August 27 after judge approval, describes teen protections applying automatically to under-18s in participating US states and territories. The details are regional and time-sensitive; they should not be assumed to apply everywhere. The announcement describes broader time, content, and supervision measures, not a universal switch for blocking Instagram Live. Read Meta’s announcement about its agreement with state attorneys general for the stated scope and terms.

Understand the described time settings and exceptions
For the participating jurisdictions described in the announcement, the protections include a default two-hour daily limit across Facebook and Instagram, an app block from midnight to 6 a.m., and notifications muted from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. except for specified safety and account alerts and direct messages. The announcement also describes prompts during long sessions and teen content settings.
Direct messages are excluded from Night Mode, Time Limit, and School Mode restrictions. That exception matters if your main concern is unwanted contact: time limits or muted notifications should not be mistaken for a complete messaging block. Meta also describes parent supervision tools and teen content settings, but the announcement does not establish that these settings block every live broadcast.
Roblox: set content and communication controls independently
Roblox provides parent-managed content and communication settings, but the options depend on the child’s age and account type. A parent should link the child’s account in Parental Controls, then review the current content restrictions and communication settings. Roblox’s Parental Controls guidance describes the family tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck experience access, chat, and screen time
Access to a Roblox experience and real-time chat inside an experience are separate considerations. Experience chat is a communication control; changing it does not itself establish that access to every experience has been removed. Roblox says chat settings depend on age checks and that parents can turn chat off for users under 13. Its screen-time features are not identical for all teens.

Some blocks may take effect only after the child next enters an experience. After changing a setting, have the child re-enter the relevant experience and check that the intended restriction is in effect. The available guidance does not establish a universal Roblox toggle that blocks all livestreams, so do not treat experience or chat controls as a comprehensive livestream filter.
PlayStation: add console-account limits where relevant
PlayStation Family Management can restrict game and media age ratings, set daily play time, manage communication and content sharing, disable web-browser access, set spending limits, and protect settings with passcodes. Family Management is available on PS4 and PS5, the web, and the PlayStation App. See the PlayStation parental controls page for the US for the current account options.
Use these settings as a device layer
Console controls can be useful when a child watches game-related streams or accesses apps through a PlayStation account. Set the child’s account permissions for the console, including browser access and communication, as appropriate. These are console-account controls: PlayStation’s guidance does not claim to provide a blanket filter for every third-party streaming app or live broadcast. If a service has its own family settings, configure those on the service account too.

TikTok LIVE: check the current rules, but do not assume a universal block
A December 2025 guide from the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England listed TikTok’s livestreaming function as available to broadcasters aged 18 and older, with viewing at 13. Those figures are a dated reference, not a guarantee of the current rule for every country or account. The available guidance here does not establish exact current TikTok Family Pairing steps for restricting LIVE viewing or broadcasting, so avoid relying on an assumed menu path. Check TikTok’s current local terms and the controls shown in the parent and child accounts.

When reviewing any available family settings, keep the same distinctions in mind: limits on a child’s ability to broadcast may not restrict what they can watch, and chat or contact settings may not change live-content access. Confirm the result on the child’s account rather than inferring coverage from a setting’s name.
Use age rules as a check, not as a substitute for controls
The Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England published a parent guide with platform information current at the time of writing in December 2025, and warns that it may change. Its snapshot lists TikTok Live broadcasting at 18 and viewing at 13; YouTube livestreaming at 16; Instagram Live at 16; and Twitch at 13. These figures are not universal law or necessarily current platform policy for every location. Check the service’s current terms for your region and the child’s account before making a decision. The guide is available as A Guide for Parents and Carers on Managing Children’s Digital Lives.
An age threshold and a parental setting answer different questions. The threshold describes who may use or participate in a feature under the stated policy; an account or device control determines what access is permitted in practice. Neither one should be presumed to filter every live stream across services.

Choose the right control for the risk
| Concern | Controls to review | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Child starts a stream | Twitch Family Center’s restriction on going live; current service age rules | That viewing other streams is also blocked |
| Child appears in an adult-owned YouTube stream | Adult visibly present for an under-16 participant; privacy, embed, and chat moderation settings | A general restriction on watching YouTube live streams |
| Unwanted private contact | Twitch Whispers; Roblox communication and experience chat settings; service-specific contact controls | That live content itself is hidden |
| Unwanted content discovery | Twitch Content Classification Labels; Roblox content restrictions; available teen content settings | A guaranteed filter for all live content |
| Use on a shared console | PlayStation account limits for age ratings, communication, browser access, and playtime | A universal filter for every third-party app or broadcast |
| Excessive time or late-night use | Service-specific screen-time tools; applicable regional Meta time protections; console playtime limits | That all communication is blocked during a time restriction |
Review and maintain the settings
- Check the account, not just the device. Confirm restrictions are attached to the child’s account and that they are using that account on each device.
- Test each permission separately. Check whether the child can watch, broadcast, participate, chat, and use direct messages. A setting that controls one action may leave the others unchanged.
- Revisit settings after changes. Review them after an app or console update, a change in the child’s age or account type, or a switch to a new device.
- Explain the rules to the child. Agree on what they may watch, whether they may appear on camera, and which adults they can contact if a stream or chat makes them uncomfortable.
Platform labels, age gates, time limits, account permissions, and console settings can reduce exposure and contact, but their coverage differs. The practical approach is to set each available control for its specific purpose and verify the result on the account the child actually uses.
