How to Enable or Disable Virtualization (SVM) in Windows 11

Change AMD SVM Mode in your PC’s UEFI/BIOS—not in a general Windows 11 toggle. Use Advanced startup to reach firmware, then follow your manufacturer’s menu and save instructions.

To enable or disable AMD SVM virtualization on a Windows 11 PC, open the UEFI/BIOS firmware settings, find SVM Mode (or the manufacturer’s equivalent), choose Enabled or Disabled, then save and exit. Windows 11 provides a way to restart into firmware; there is no single general Windows Settings toggle for SVM. Many PCs already have virtualization enabled, so check the current state before changing it.

What SVM Mode does—and where to change it

SVM Mode is a firmware setting for AMD CPU virtualization. ASUS describes the control in its AMD 800 Series BIOS manual as enabling or disabling CPU virtualization; available menu items can depend on the installed CPU. See the ASUS BIOS manual.

The setting is changed in UEFI/BIOS, not directly in Windows Settings. Windows 11’s Advanced startup menu is simply the route into the firmware utility. Microsoft notes that many Windows devices already have virtualization enabled. Its virtualization instructions also advise identifying the device manufacturer and model because firmware interfaces and instructions vary.

Open UEFI/BIOS from Windows 11

  1. Save your work, then open Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Beside Advanced startup, select Restart now.
  3. After the PC restarts, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Settings > Restart.

The firmware utility may be labelled BIOS rather than UEFI. If you do not see UEFI Settings, consult the support instructions for your specific PC or motherboard model; the available route and labels can vary.

Enable or disable SVM Mode

  1. In the firmware menus, look for SVM Mode or a similarly named CPU-virtualization option.
  2. Choose Enabled to turn on CPU virtualization, or Disabled to turn it off.
  3. Use the firmware’s displayed save-and-exit command. Do not assume the same key applies to every PC.

For example, an MSI guide dated January 30, 2020, places AMD SVM at Advanced > SVM Mode and uses F10 to save and exit. That is an MSI-specific example, not a universal menu path or key, and its stated default should not be assumed for other systems. See MSI’s SVM guide.

Do you also need a Windows virtualization feature?

Some applications require a Windows component in addition to firmware virtualization. Microsoft lists Virtual Machine Platform under Turn Windows features on or off and notes that enabling it might apply to PCs upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11. This optional Windows feature is separate from SVM Mode; follow the application’s requirements to determine whether you need it. A restart may be required after enabling the feature.

Safety and troubleshooting

  • Check before changing: virtualization may already be enabled. Confirm the current setting and check your device maker’s instructions.
  • The menu or setting is missing: firmware interfaces differ by manufacturer, model, and sometimes installed CPU. Use the support documentation for your exact system rather than relying on another brand’s menu path.
  • Save key does not work: follow the on-screen firmware controls; save-and-exit keys are not universal.
  • A Windows app still reports a problem: verify whether it requires Virtual Machine Platform or another Windows component as well as SVM. Changing SVM alone does not enable optional Windows features.

Change only the setting you need. Microsoft warns that other firmware changes might prevent access to Windows.
