How to Enable or Disable PvP on a Conan Exiles Server

Set Conan Exiles PvP with the in-game Server Settings menu or ServerSettings.ini, then configure schedules, building damage, verification, and rollback safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To change the main PvP rule on a Conan Exiles server, open Settings > Server Settings as an administrator, change PvP Enabled, and apply the setting. On a dedicated Windows server, edit ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini in the [ServerSettings] section: use PVPEnabled=True for player-versus-player combat or PVPEnabled=False for a PvE ruleset.

The in-game method can take effect without a restart when the server accepts the change. A direct file edit must be saved and then reloaded or restarted according to your host’s procedure. Verify the file, the server-browser ruleset, and a real-world test before announcing the change to players.

What the PvP setting controls

PVPEnabled is the master switch for player-versus-player combat. It answers the basic question: can players damage one another under the server’s combat rules? Setting it to True enables PvP; setting it to False disables it and makes the server PvE-oriented.

That switch is not the same as every form of conflict on the server. Time restrictions can limit when PvP is active, and building-damage settings govern whether player structures can be attacked. A server can therefore be configured for full-time PvP, PvE with scheduled conflict windows, or PvP with separate limits on structure damage.

Goal Primary setting What else to check
Allow combat at any time PVPEnabled=True Review PvP time restrictions and building-damage rules so they do not narrow the intended behavior.
Make the server PvE PVPEnabled=False Confirm the browser listing and test with consenting players; scheduled keys should not be mistaken for the master switch.
Allow PvP only during windows Enable PvP and configure RestrictPVPTime plus the day/time keys. Check the server’s time zone and each weekday’s start and end values.
Protect or expose player buildings independently Use the building-damage restriction settings. PvP being enabled does not, by itself, mean structures can be damaged at every hour.

Before changing a live server

Make the change as an administrator and decide whether the change is temporary or a new permanent ruleset. A PvP toggle affects the expectations of every player online, so announce the maintenance window or the exact time the rule will change.

  • Confirm access: You need administrator privileges in the game for the GUI method, or access to the dedicated server’s configuration files for the INI method.
  • Record the current value: Note the existing value of PVPEnabled and any time or building-damage settings. This gives you a reliable rollback point.
  • Back up the file: Before editing, copy ServerSettings.ini to a separate location or make a dated duplicate. Do not overwrite the only known-good configuration.
  • Check the host’s workflow: Some control panels require the server to be stopped before a file can be edited; others provide a reload action. Follow that panel’s save and restart sequence so your edit is not replaced by an older copy.
  • Use the intended server: If you manage several servers or worlds, confirm the name, save location, and port before changing anything.

The file path in this guide is the documented path for a dedicated Windows server. A host may expose it through a file manager rather than showing the underlying Windows directory, and another operating-system build may use a different path. Do not assume the Windows path applies unchanged to an unlisted platform.

Method 1: Change PvP in the in-game Server Settings interface

Funcom documents server administration from inside the game through the options and Server Settings interface. Menu labels can differ slightly by platform, game version, or hosting panel, but the control is normally named PvP Enabled.

  1. Join the server with an administrator account. A normal player may be able to view some options but cannot apply server-wide changes.
  2. Open the settings menu. Go to Settings > Server Settings. On an interface that uses an Options label first, open Options > Server Settings.
  3. Locate PvP Enabled. Use the setting search or scroll through the server-rules section if your interface provides one.
  4. Choose the rule. Turn the control on to allow PvP, or turn it off to make the server PvE.
  5. Apply or save. Do not leave the page without selecting the interface’s Apply, Save, or equivalent button. Closing the menu can discard an uncommitted change.
  6. Reopen the setting. Return to Server Settings and confirm that the control still shows the value you selected.
  7. Check the public ruleset. Refresh the server browser or reconnect from another client and look for the listing’s PvP/PvE indication when the browser displays one.
  8. Run a controlled test. With another consenting player, test a harmless interaction in a safe area. Stop immediately if the observed behavior does not match the announced rules.

Funcom states that server settings can be adjusted and implemented on the fly after they are applied. That means a restart is not necessarily required for a GUI change. Clients may still need to leave and reconnect before their displayed rules or permissions refresh, and a host panel can impose its own reload behavior.

If the control is missing or cannot be changed

  • Verify that the character or account actually has server-admin privileges rather than only clan or moderator permissions.
  • Confirm that you joined the intended server and not a local or test session with a different configuration.
  • Look for a collapsed server-rules category or a search field; the exact layout is not identical on every platform.
  • If a host panel manages settings, make the change in the panel it designates as authoritative, then reconnect and check the in-game value.

Method 2: Edit ServerSettings.ini on a dedicated Windows server

Use the INI method when you administer the files directly, need a repeatable configuration, or cannot reach the in-game interface. The relevant file is:

ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini

Within that file, find the [ServerSettings] section. Add the key if it is absent, or change the existing key without creating a second conflicting entry.

Enable PvP

[ServerSettings]
PVPEnabled=True

Disable PvP

[ServerSettings]
PVPEnabled=False
  1. Schedule a safe edit. If the host recommends stopping the server, stop it and wait until the panel reports that the process has ended. If the host supports an offline editor or reload, use that documented process.
  2. Open the exact file. Navigate to ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini, not a similarly named backup, client configuration, or generated log.
  3. Locate [ServerSettings]. Keep the key in that section. A duplicate key in another section may be ignored, and duplicate entries can make troubleshooting ambiguous.
  4. Set one value. Enter exactly PVPEnabled=True or PVPEnabled=False. The spelling, lack of spaces around the equals sign, and Boolean value matter.
  5. Save the file in plain text. Preserve the .ini extension and avoid saving an additional .txt extension.
  6. Reload or restart. Start the server again, or use the host’s documented reload action. A direct file edit is not guaranteed to reach a running process until that process reads the file.
  7. Verify after startup. Reopen the file, confirm the saved value, inspect the server listing, and perform a controlled test.

If the key already exists, edit that line rather than adding another one. If the file is regenerated by the host, make the change through the host’s editor or stop the regeneration process first; otherwise a restart can restore the previous value.

Scheduled PvP: time windows instead of all-day combat

For a server that should be mostly PvE but permit combat at defined times, use the master switch together with the time-restriction settings. The configuration reference identifies RestrictPVPTime and weekday-specific keys such as PVPTimeMondayStart and PVPTimeMondayEnd.

Configuration element Role Common mistake
PVPEnabled Turns the server’s PvP capability on or off. Trying to create a schedule while this master switch is disabled.
RestrictPVPTime Applies a time restriction so PvP is available only during configured windows. Enabling the restriction without defining usable start and end values.
PVPTimeMondayStart / PVPTimeMondayEnd Define the Monday window; equivalent keys exist for other weekdays. Configuring one day and assuming the same hours automatically apply to every day.
Building-damage restriction settings Control when player-owned structures can be damaged. Assuming a PvP window automatically grants structure damage for the same period.

A practical scheduled-PvP design has three separate decisions:

  1. Can players fight at all? Set PVPEnabled accordingly.
  2. When can they fight? Enable the time restriction and define each relevant weekday’s start and end values.
  3. Can structures be damaged then? Review the separate building-damage restrictions and set them independently.

Document the server’s time zone and the exact interpretation of the configured clock. A player in another region may see the window at a different local time, while the server continues to enforce its own clock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Examples of ruleset decisions

  • Always-on PvP: Enable PVPEnabled and leave time restrictions configured only if you intentionally want a limit. Test both combat and structure behavior.
  • Weekend conflict: Enable PvP, restrict the schedule, and define Saturday and Sunday windows. Decide separately whether building damage follows those windows.
  • Pure PvE: Set PVPEnabled=False. Do not rely on an empty or incorrect schedule to suppress combat.
  • Combat without raid damage: Enable the appropriate PvP rule while keeping building-damage restrictions protective. Confirm with a test structure rather than inferring the result from player combat alone.

How to verify that the change really worked

Use three independent checks. One check can be misleading: a cached browser label may lag, an unsaved file may look correct in an editor, and a test may be affected by a schedule.

  1. Configuration check: For an INI change, reopen the file after the server has started and confirm the exact Boolean value under [ServerSettings]. For a GUI change, reopen Server Settings and confirm the control.
  2. Listing check: Refresh the server browser or reconnect so the current ruleset is fetched. Compare the displayed PvP/PvE label with the intended setting.
  3. Behavior check: Ask two consenting players to test combat during a time that should be allowed and, if relevant, another time that should be blocked. Test structure damage separately because it has separate controls.

Record the date, the setting value, the schedule, and the test result in the server’s administration notes. This makes a later rollback or investigation much faster, especially when several administrators edit the same world.

Troubleshooting common failures

The server still behaves as PvE after setting PVPEnabled=True

  • Confirm that the key is in the active file and inside [ServerSettings].
  • Check for a second PVPEnabled line with the opposite value and remove the duplicate.
  • Verify that the host actually reloaded or restarted the process after the file edit.
  • Refresh the browser and reconnect; an old client session may still show stale rules.
  • Inspect RestrictPVPTime and the weekday window. PvP can be enabled globally but unavailable at the moment of the test because the schedule excludes it.

The server switches back to PvE after an administrator logs in

A 2019 Funcom forum report described a historical issue in which logging in as an administrator could remove PVPEnabled=True. Treat that report as a warning about an older or host-specific failure mode, not as proof that every current server has the bug. If your server unexpectedly changes after an admin login:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop or safely pause administration changes.
  2. Reopen ServerSettings.ini and check whether the line disappeared or changed.
  3. Restore PVPEnabled=True if that is the intended rule, save it, and restart or reload using the host’s procedure.
  4. Log in again and recheck the file, listing, and behavior. If the line is repeatedly rewritten, identify which panel, startup script, or administrative action is generating the file.

The GUI shows one value, but the file shows another

Use the interface that your host treats as authoritative. A control panel may write the file after you leave the game, while the game may write settings when an administrator applies changes. Make one change, allow the save or reload to complete, then verify both views. Avoid alternating between them during a live event because each can overwrite the other’s value.

Players can fight, but buildings cannot be damaged

This is usually a ruleset distinction rather than a failed PvP toggle. Review the building-damage restriction settings and their time windows. Test against a consenting owner during an allowed window, and make sure the test is not occurring during a protected period.

Buildings are being damaged when they should be protected

Inspect every building-damage restriction and weekday window, not only PVPEnabled. Confirm the server clock and the configured start/end values. If the schedule crosses midnight, document how the server interprets the two endpoints and test on each side of the transition before opening the server to unrestricted raiding.

The setting keeps disappearing after a restart

  • Check that you edited the live server’s file rather than a local client file or an inactive backup.
  • Look for a host-panel template, startup script, or automated configuration restore.
  • Ensure the file is writable by the server process and was saved with the original name and extension.
  • Make the change through the panel’s built-in configuration editor if it regenerates INI files on startup.

Rolling back safely

If a PvP change causes unexpected conflict, return to the last known-good value rather than deleting unrelated settings. For an all-server rollback, set PVPEnabled=False, save, and reload or restart. For a schedule problem, restore the previously recorded restriction and weekday values. Then perform the same three verification checks before telling players that the rollback is complete.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the backup until the server has remained stable through at least one normal restart. When restoring a backup, compare its timestamp and contents first; blindly replacing the whole file can undo unrelated changes such as rates, harvesting rules, or administrator settings.

Administrator checklist

  • Announce whether the change is temporary, permanent, or scheduled.
  • Confirm administrator access and the correct server.
  • Back up the current configuration.
  • Change only PVPEnabled for a simple always-on or always-off rule.
  • Configure RestrictPVPTime and each required weekday key for scheduled combat.
  • Review building-damage restrictions separately.
  • Apply the GUI change or complete the host’s save/reload sequence.
  • Verify the setting in the configuration, the server browser, and an agreed test.
  • Recheck after the next restart or administrative login if the server has shown signs of reverting.

Bottom line

Use PvP Enabled for the fundamental rule: on for PvP, off for PvE. Use PVPEnabled=True or PVPEnabled=False in ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini when administering a dedicated Windows server. For scheduled combat, add the time-restriction and weekday settings, and configure building damage independently. A change is complete only after the saved value, public ruleset, and actual player behavior agree.
